Lightning wasn’t going to strike Team Canada twice.

Rachel Homan’s Ottawa rink is one win away from claiming the gold medal at the 2014 Ford World Women’s Curling Champi-onship, presented by Booster Juice.

Second Alison Kreviazuk demonstrated her power with some big takeouts while Homan feathered draws when needed as Canada defeated Switzerland 8-3 Friday night in the one-two Page playoff game.

The win sent Homan, Kreviazuk, third Emma Miskew and lead Lisa Weagle into Sunday’s final. It also helped heal the burn from an upset loss to Switzerland during the round robin.

“This is the game we wanted to get to,” said Homan, whose team finished third in their first world championship appearance last year in Latvia.

“Our goals are complete so far. We want to get that gold this time.”

The Swiss rink of skip Binia Feltscher, third Irene Schori, second Franziska Kaufmann and lead Christine Urech move into tonight’s semifinal. They will play the winner of this morning’s three-four playoff game between Russia and Korea.

“They played really well,” said Schori. “We also played good but Alison had two big

shots that were awesome.“We are still happy and hope to do the next

game better. We hope to see Canada in Sun-day’s final.”

Kreviazuk threw her weight around, toss-ing two triple raise takeouts and one double raise takeout.

The shots fueled Kreviazuk’s confidence, which had dipped during the week.

“It’s definitely going up a lot higher,” said the 25-year-old. “It’s been frustrating throughout the week managing the ice, the rocks.

“It takes a toll on your confidence some-times but you’ve got to believe you’re a great thrower and you’re dealing with the best sce-nario you possibly can. Just go back to the basics and do what you know you can.”

Weagle called Kreviazuk “an amazing curler.”

“She just visualizes it,” said Weagle, who celebrates her 29th birthday Monday. “She is able to make those big shots.

“I didn’t get a few (rocks) in the right posi-

tion. I was really happy she was able to bail me out in a couple of ends.”

Homan showed her power in the eighth end, making a double that had the 2,800 Har-bour Station fans on their feet cheering. She won the game with a takeout, scoring three points in the ninth.

In the seventh end, facing three Swiss rocks, Homan made drawing the four-foot look easy for a 5-2 lead.

“Credit the Swiss,” said Homan, 24. “We had to make some crazy shots because they were playing really well.”

A couple of mistakes proved costly for Feltscher. Trailing 1-0 in the third end Feltscher had a draw to tie but came up inches short, giving Canada a steal.

In the fifth Feltscher wanted to remove a Canadian stone with her last shot. Instead she nudged Canada’s stone into scoring position. That allowed Homan a draw for two and a 4-1 lead.

Schori said nerves cost the Swiss a couple of points.

“The fans in the stands were so loud,” said the 30-year-old clerk. “We were a little bit nervous before the game.

“It’s the first time we played in an arena like that with so many fans.”

The Swiss were hoping to catch magic in a bottle for a second time. The Canadians fin-ished the round-robin with a 10-1 record. Their only loss was a 8-2 defeat Sunday night by Switzerland.

The Swiss came to Saint John under the radar.

Feltscher, a 35-year-old mother of two, played on Mirjam Ott’s team that won the silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. She skipped at the 2010 world champi-onships in Swift Current, Sask., posting a 3-8 record.

This year Switzerland were 9-2 in the round robin. The only teams they lost to were Korea and Russia, one of whom they will face again in the semifinal.

“We have to concentrate and focus,” Schori said about the morning game. “Maybe just do the same things we did the whole week.

“It will be better tomorrow.”For Homan, a prize that eluded her last year

is within her grasp again.“It’s all confidence right now,” she said. “We

are feeling good.“We are going to be nervous come the gold

medal game but it’s going to be a good thing. It means a lot to us and we want to bring back gold for Canada.”|

Swisshelm swaps slider for micLeaving something you love is never

easy. Deciding the right time to leave can be just as difficult.

The end of an Olympic cycle becomes a time of decision for many athletes. Do you want to chase your dream for four more years? Are you willing to commit the time, work and sacrifice?

Veteran American curler Ann Swisshelm, a former world champion and two time Olym-pian, recently asked herself those ques-tions and came up with the answer. She has decided to step off the ice but wants to remain involved in curling at some level.

“I am going to retire from active play,” said the 45-year-old Chicago resident. “I am not going to leave the sport. I am going to find a way to stay involved.”

There is a changing of the guard among the American curling ranks. Allison Pottinger, skip of the U.S. team playing at the 2014 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, pre-sented by Booster Juice, also plans to retire. Announcements from other players are expected.

Swisshelm doesn’t see this as a problem for USA Curling but rather an opportunity.

“It’s not about the talent in the United States,” she said. “We have some of the most

talented curlers I’ve seen anywhere.“It’s about getting the most out of that tal-

ent, making the most of the moments we are given. Our teams haven’t been doing a great job of that. Some changes are necessary. Per-sonnel changes are normal. I don’t think it’s any reason to panic but it’s a time to think about what you do and why you do it and how you do it, and try and improve.”

It’s in that regard Swisshelm believes she can still contribute to the sport that’s been a huge part of her life for almost 25 years.

“With the experiences I’ve had I could work as support as a team leader type position helping plan a season, plan logistics,” she said.

“I also think I could be a coach, talking about how to build team, work on commu-nication, shot selection, ice reading, all that

stuff. I think I could help a team.”Swisshelm is in Saint John this week doing

some television work with the World Curling Federation. She’s enjoyed being part of the coverage but world rather be more involved with the teams.

“It’s kind of where the opportunities lie and where I can best put my energy,” she said.

Swisshelm played lead for the Erika Brown team that finished 10th at the Sochi Winter Olympics. She also was part of Kari Erick-son’s rink that lost to Canada’s Kelley Law in the bronze medal game of the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.

One of the highlights of Swisshelm’s career was winning the 2003 world championship playing lead for Debbie McCormick. The U.S. beat Canada’s Colleen Jones 5-3 in the final.

“Playing in Winnipeg for the world champi-onship title was one of the greatest privileges any athlete in this sport could ever have,” she said.

“I tell people that we were not the best team that week, but we were the best team that day. In sports it comes down to being the best team in the final moment. It is something I am really proud of.”

During her career Swisshelm played in five world championships and three Continental Cups. She won the U.S. mixed championships in 2001 and was the USA Curling female ath-lete of the year in 2001. She also received the Frances Brodie Award, the World Curling Fed-eration sportsmanship award, in 2001.

Pottinger said Swisshelm was fierce com-petitor and a great teammate.

CONTINUED“She was always working hard,” said Pottinger. “She’d

spend time memorizing the ice.“She also was very positive. She’s a huge advocate for

athletes’ rights and has a huge role there.”Swisshelm, who graduated from college with a theatre

degree, showed humorous side this year. Along with the rest of Brown’s Olympic team she put on a costume and did a hilarious video parody of the hit song What Does the Fox Say.

“We did that in about an hour,” she said. “It was kind of a low-production value.

“We’re a pretty serious team. Our approach to all of our practise and work and training and competition was very serious. For us to let loose and do something very outside the norm for us was great.”

There are some things about curling Swisshelm won’t miss. The long days away from her husband. Sleeping in airports, tracking down lost luggage.

She also believes retiring will help her bank account.“I just gained several thousand dollars a month,” she

said. “I won’t miss the expenses part.”Swisshelm will miss playing the game.“I love putting rocks into play and the intensity of the

moment, when you have to make a shot,” she said. “That’s really fun.”

Swisshelm is leaving curling by her own choice and at a time of her choosing. That’s something not all athletes are afforded.

“It’s time to take off the slider and just look at the game from a different way,” she said.

“My dog will be quite happy to have me at home. I think my husband will as well.” U.S. Curling is losing two big name women players after this season: Ann Swisshelm and Allison Pottinger (above).

An out of the box idea has resulted in a group of head-turning murals that have earned praise from players and

fans at the 2014 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice.

The 16 posters hanging in the pedway entering Harbour Station were created by Grade 2 to Grade 6 students from 16 local schools. They were produced as part of the Irvin Oil-sponsored school program designed to encourage children to become involved in curling.

The artworks are eye-catching in their col-our and content. Some are simple in design while others are complex in their content. The pictures represent the 12 teams competing at the world championship and incorporate images and themes from the countries.

Bayview School’s drawing for Switzerland shows snow-topped mountains. Hampton Elementary produced a work showing the Latvian flag with the silhouette of two curlers. Highland dancers prance on St. George Ele-mentary School’s tribute to Scotland.

The China poster by St. Stephen Elementary has panda bears, dragons and a picture of Dr.

Norman Bethume. The children at Saint Rose School included the faces of the four curlers from the Czech Republic on their mural.

The bilingual tribute to Canada from Centre Scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain has a beaver, totem poles and an inuksuk.

“We wanted to take the school program out of the box and make it more than just having the kids come to Harbour Station and watch a game they really didn’t understand,” said Doreen Tait, director of school programs for the world championship organizing commit-tee.

Committee members visited the schools last fall. The children played a simulated game of curling and studied a world map showing where the teams were coming.

In January Heidi Stoddart, a local author and illustrator who teaches art in the school district, became involved in the project.

“She was fabulous,” aid Tait. “I really credit her hard work for the results you see here today.

“She really gave some great ideas, great techniques and strategies.”

Players from the teams have been signing

the murals. When the championships ends Sunday the murals will be returned to the school that produced them, where they will remain on display.

“Thanks so much for this poster,” the Swiss team wrote on their mural.

Russian skip Anna Sidorova was genuinely touched by the project.

“It was pretty nice,” Sidorova said breaking into a large smile. “You feel like people are try-ing to be kind to you.

“We feel more warm. We like it. It was important for us.”

Art for curling sake has been a big hit

Looking for a taste of good-time East Coast music? The Patch is definitely the place you need to be tonight! We’ve hauled in Big Fish to fire up the party in the Patch – just a short walk from Harbour Station in the the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre. The lively acoustic quintet is noted for intricate four-part harmonies and a wide-ranging repertoire of classic tunes. Audiences from far and wide have come to appreciate their creativity, showmanship and incredible talent. Admission to the Patch is included in your same day pass to the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice.

The catch of the day!

Whether you’ve been part of the crowd at Harbour Station, or watching the action at home on TV, you’ll definitely recognize the many faces of Hans Madsen. He’s become the ‘human flag’ for the Ford World Women’s… displaying the colours of a different country each day. “It’s just something I enjoy doing,” said Madsen, a native of Yorkton, Sask. “If it makes people smile, that’s all that matters.” A devoted follower of women’s curling, Madsen, along with his wife Judy Burak, has been a regular at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and world women’s championships for the past several years. Their travels have taken them across Canada and around the globe.

Korea stuns co-favoured Swedes in TBJIM MORRIS

Eye Opener

Korea has climbed on the momentum bus and is taking a ride to the playoffs.

The Koreans managed to keep things sim-ple in a 7-5 win over Sweden in Friday after-noon’s tiebreaker at the 2014 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice.

Ji-sun Kim and her team of Seul-bee Lee, Mi-Sung Shin and Un-Chi Gim will play Rus-sia in this morning’s three-four Page playoff game. The winner of that match faces the win-ner of Friday night’s semifinal.

“That game we very much enjoyed,” said a smiling Kim. “Maybe we got lucky. We wanted a simple game.

“Team Sweden played very well. They seemed a little nervous.”

The Koreans have won seven of their last eight games, including beating Russia 6-5 in the round robin.

It was a bitter end to the week for Sweden, silver medallists at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

“Korea played well (and) we missed a few key shots,” said skip Margaretha Sigfridsson.

Fatigue from travel and competition played a factor in Sweden’s performance but Sigfrids-

son refused to use that as an excuse.“We should be able to manage to win the

games and gather that energy that is needed to go into the playoffs,” she said.

Korea took a 6-5 lead and the hammer in the 10th end against Sweden. Un-Chi Gim, the third who throws final stones, made a tap-back with her last rock to send the Korean women to the playoffs for the second time in the country’s history.

Gim, who led all players by curling 88 per

cent, made another pretty tap-back in the sixth end to score three points and give Korea a 5-3 lead.

Kim lost the bronze medal of the 2012 world championships in Lethbridge to Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin. Having that experience should help her today.

“Maybe we won’t be nervous and will just enjoy the game,” said the 26-year-old. “Maybe we will get to the 1-2 game.

‘We will just enjoy it.”

Russian skip Anna Sidorova expects a bat-tle.

“It will be a really great fight for each of us,” said Sidorova. “They want to win, they want to get to the medals.

“They did a great job during the whole week. Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow but we will be really fighting.”

If Sweden had beaten Canada in its final round-robin game Thursday night Sigfrids-son’s team of Maria Wennerstroem, Christina Bertrup and Maria Prytz would have moved into the one-two playoff game. But a 9-6 loss to Team Canada left Sweden with a 8-3 record and a tie with Russia and Korea.

Under the tiebreaking formula Russia was awarded third place, setting up the tiebreaker game.

Kim’s team defeated Scotland 10-5 in their final game.

Sweden pounded Korea 13-4 on the open-ing day of the championship but couldn’t manage a win when the playoffs were on the line.

Sigfridsson said Korea has potential in the playoffs.

“They could do well,” she said. “I don’t think they will win, but they could end up taking a medal for sure.”

Meet The Teams • Team Canada • Rachel HomanEditor’s note: We decided to have a little fun

and ask the players here this week some questions about themselves. The questions are at the top with first entry, all the rest answers only appear to avoid duplication.

RACHEL HOMAN • SKIP 1.What are you most looking forward to

in Saint John, aside from the curling? Being in Canada and enjoying the experience with everyone in the city.

2.Which player - who plays your position (alternates, use your usual position) do you most admire and respect? What a great per-formance by Jones going undefeated at the Olympics. Hats off to Jen!

3. Male player, your position? John Morris4.If you could have competed in Sochi in an

event OTHER THAN curling, what would that be? bobsled

5.Do you think mixed doubles will find its way into the Olympics; would you prefer to see Mixed 4s? I love mixed doubles would be great to see it in the Olympics

6.Who has been the biggest influence on your career? Without a doubt my dad, he has supported and pushed me to be the curler I am today.

7. Favourite pre game meal and post game drink? salad with chicken pre game meal

8. What is your favourite non-curling activ-

ity, charity, community group: I love playing all sports but I play soccer and volleyball in the summer, CHF - Canadian Hunger Foun-dation is a charity that I support.

9. What song/band do you listen to when

working out or getting ready to play? I listen to all types of music

10. If you had handed out the Best Picture Oscar (Movie) this year, what would it have been? I think 12 years a slave deserved the

award. It was a hard movie to watch but one everyone should definitely watch.

Through team sport, children learn the

life lessons of teamwork, fair play and

perseverance; they are the same values

we uphold here at Irving Oil.

It’s why we’re proud to sponsor

Getting Started in Curling for many young

students in New Brunswick, giving youth an

opportunity to learn how to curl and attend

a championship game.

Good luck to all participants of the 2014

EMMA MISKEW • Third1.Being in Canada with our

friends and family able to join us2. Kaitlyn Lawes - our Olympic

gold medalist!3. Jon Mead4. Freestyle Skiing5. Mixed doubles6. My dad, he got me started

when I was 5 years old and both parents have always supported me

7. Water (super exciting answer!) 8. Our team supports the Cana-

dian Hunger Foundation 9. Playlist of many different songs

and artists, but I would have to say Rihanna is my favourite artist.

10. Hunger Games

ALISON KREVIAZUK • SECOND1. The amazing spectators - we

are so excited to play in our home country.

2. Jill Officer3. Marc Kennedy4. Speed skating5. I’d rather see mixed 4’s6. Sandra Schmirler7. I don’t think I prefer one thing

to another, depends on the day! 8. Travelling and biking 9. Our team has a few lucky songs

we play before big games - team

secret.10. I’m wayyyy behind on my

movies... not enough time in the day! I’ll have to get back to you after I’ve watched a few more.

LISA WEAGLE • LEAD1. I’m really looking forward to

playing as Team Canada in Can-ada… and eating some fresh sea-food!

2. Dawn McEwen is one of the best leads in curling. I have a lot of respect for the work she puts into all aspects of her game and the pride she takes in playing lead.

3. I’d pick Ben Hebert for my all-star team – he’s an amazing sweeper and thrower! He is also a great team player and brings a lot of intensity to the ice.

4. After meeting some of the athletes on the bobsleigh team I thought that would be a fun sport to try – until I went on the roller coaster in Las Vegas during the Con-tinental Cup. My teammates can confirm that I screamed the whole way. So maybe bobsled isn’t for me unless I figure out how to deal with my fear!

5. Both would be great - the more curling events in the Olympics the

better! 6. Bruce Merklinger was my

coach for six years when I was in juniors. He invested a lot of time in teaching me, and really laid the foundation of my curling career. I feel fortunate to have benefited from his experience and knowledge.

7. Pre-game meal depends on the time of day - nothing too heavy, but enough to get me through 10 ends of sweeping. And for a post-game drink - just water!

8. Our team is proud to support the Canadian Hunger Foundation. As well, the Sandra Schmirler Foun-dation and CHEO are two organiza-tions that are close to our hearts.

9. Anything to get me pumped up!

10. The only Oscar contender I’ve seen so far is Wolf of Wall Street, so I’d have to give it the best picture award.

STEPAHNIE LEDREW • FIFTH1. I love the Atlantic! I’ll be on the

look out for seafood.2.Kristy McDonald (Jenion) - she

has fought long and hard to make waves in the huge shadow of Team Jennifer Jones with her skipper Chelsea Carey, and this year, she

nearly won a national champion-ship.... 6 months pregnant.

3. Richard Hart4. Luge - I’m adventurous, and

that looks like a wild ride!5. No. The fans aren’t behind it,

and without fans, the game dies. I would love to see Mixed 4’s as it’s the same game we’ve grown to love but with an extra team representing our country at the big Show - any extra exposure for the sport is good in my books.

6. My mom and my brother. Words can’t explain their influence on not just my curling career, but my entire life.

7. Pre-game meal would be some sort of salmon/salad combo (pref-erably the California Spring Salad from Milestones) and post-game drink is red, red wine. (After rehy-drating with some H2O of course...)

8. When I need to rest and relax, I find a series to get addicted to on Netflix. Currently it’s House of Cards. As for physical activity, I’m addicted to tennis.

9. The Trews, Hey Rosetta, or any Songza playlist with a beat.

10. The only nominated movie I saw was Gravity. And I most defi-nitely would NOT give it an Oscar!

(Sorry Sandra Bullock, I really do like you.)

EARLE MORRIS • COACH1. Seafood, seafood and seafood!

Did I mention the seafood?2. I am a big fan of fellow coach

David Hay – who coaches Eve Muir-head from Scotland.

4. Bobsled – it has 4 team mem-bers just like curling!

5. I think that mixed doubles will make its way into the Olympics and I prefer it to Mixed 4s – it gives coun-tries that are fledgling curling coun-tries a chance to be competitive(ie Hungary, etc) and that is good for the game.

6. My coaching career has been most influenced by Gerry Peckham – High Performance Director, CCA

7. Did I mention seafood? And I love Caesars!!

8. I enjoy golf and bridge (and seafood).

9. Whatever the ice – makers play in the rink – hope they have good taste in St John! But I am a big fan of Signal Hill and hope to hear them play in the Patch!

10. The Book Thief – inspirational movie about human struggles in WW11.

TELEGRAPH JOURNAL

The curling community continues to generously support The Sandra Schmirler Foundation opening their hearts and wallets to help babies born too small, too soon or too sick.

This has been an outstanding curling season with a very successful Telethon at the Montreal Scotties Tournament of Hearts and crowd sweeps held in Montreal, at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in Winnipeg, and the Tim Hortons Brier in Kamloops.

At the Telethon broadcast live on TSN over $252,000 was raised with curlers and volunteers manning the phones alongside Sandra’s teammates and friends.

A big thank you once again to the entire TSN crew who each year give the Foundation this opportunity to connect with donors across Canada.

At the Crowd Sweeps the participating curlers pitched in and passed the buckets to fans encouraging them to donate, and donate they did with over $52,000 raised.

In every community that a Crowd Sweep is held, the Foundation donates $50,000 to the local hospital to purchase life-saving equipment for their hospital newborn intensive care unit.

Since 2001, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation has donated over $2.4 million to 35 hospitals in every province in Canada.

Support for Sandra Schmirler Foundation

continues to grow
