President’s Blog by Bruce Blank Lucky for me that I did not study journalism. If I

had taken a different track in college, I may have

ended up with a by-line in a monthly magazine, or,

heaven forbid, a daily in a newspaper. Yes, I have

about writing a

how about “What makes this club, so cool?”

PCC is really a cool club! Meeting at Denny’s prior to

Cruisin’ for A Cure gave us a chance to share a meal,

and maybe share something about ourselves, getting to

know each other just a bit more. After the long cruise

to the event, we arrived as a group of acquaintances.

We pitched in, helped each other set up our camp with

shade covers, folding camp chairs, coolers etc.

Eventually we settled in; shared some stories, started

sparring, taking verbal jabs at each other.

Acquaintances can’t do that. But, friends can! Friends

can do this stuff, and not ruffle feathers.

Cambria had cool moments too. Remember Dan

Beadle’s driver’s meeting? He handed out “reprinted”

directions, began the route explanations, only to be

interrupted by a visit from the garbage truck. What a

comical start to a fun filled trip where we could, once

again, get to know each other just a bit more while

eating and tasting great wine.

Then there were the guys, hanging around the

smoky cigar campfire. More stories, verbal jabs,

and the “American Pie” a sing-a-long; fueled by

Maker’s Mark.

It was also really cool to see Jeff Jaeggi, and to hear

him explain his ordeal fighting cancer, and how he

appreciated the Cancer Sucks wrist band photos. It

was also really cool to hear him switch subjects to

tell us all about his new car.

We all share experiences like these, the key word

being share. PCC is cool. It is a place where

newbies become members, where acquaintances

become friends. Where friendships are

strengthened. Where friends support friends. Now,

that is what makes this club so cool!

Saturday, September 24th. Another perfect Southern California day. There was a good showing of the usual suspects for the long, grueling, eight tenths of a mile caravan to the Cruisin’ for a Cure event at the Orange County Fairgrounds from the rally point at Denny’s. Somehow, we managed to make it to the entry gate without serious incident, cruised through the gate and were guided to the Corvette parking area. We had enough easy-ups between us to create shade for everyone, which was really helpful. The day was warm and the sun relentless but the PCC folks were comfy in the shade.

Everyone went off to explore the show, which is the largest one-day car show in the country if not the entire world. Cars of every possible type were there. We were among a group of dozens of Corvettes, but if you took a walk through the show you could find representatives of every Corvette model from C1 through C7. You could have likely bought one of each too. There was a 1954 C1 for sale in one of the display halls for a mere $149K. Just imagine what our cars might be worth in another 60 years or so!

We saw at least 4 DeLorean time machines, KITT, his nemesis CARR, the Blues Brothers mobile, the original Smoky and the Bandit Trans Am, and even blew a kiss to Herbie the Love Bug. You could sip a drink in the back seat of a 1926 Lincoln limousine, dream of which exotic supercar you need in your garage, or try to reconcile why all those people would build hot rods on classic car frames when the same money would buy a brand new C7 Z06.

The Cruisin’ part is the best part. The organizers set up a circuit around and through the show and all day long, the participants “cruise” the show, showing off their cars while looking at what everyone else has brought to the party. Alyson and I took a lap and it was blast. Just like a 50‘s strip cruise but surrounded by thousands of the coolest cars on the planet.

While all of this is fun, and one could identify what they thought was the “best” part of the show, there was also the reason we were all there, and what really mattered. Cruisin’ for a Cure was started in 2000 by Debbie Baker whose husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is the world’s largest one-day charity car show with over 3,500 vehicles on display and over 200 vendors and exhibitors. Cruisin’ for a Cure is a registered non-profit California organization. The logistics, marketing, and organization of the show is all handled by volunteers dedicated to the cause of saving men from prostate cancer. Unlike many other automotive fundraising events, none of the proceeds goes to a car club, promoter, or to administrative overhead. The show offers free prostate cancer screening, and over the past years, over 10,000 men have been tested and hundreds of lives have been saved, including at least two in our own club. I took advantage of the screening and I’m expecting the results any day now. I was also encouraged while I was signing up for the blood test to supplement the blood screening with a DRE, which stands for Digital Rectal Exam. As a tech guy I was relieved to learn that a new procedure must have been invented that negates the traditional “bend over the chair” exam. I am not happy to report that the “Digital” part of this procedure was referring to the index finger “digit” of the examining doctor. The exam trailer had four rooms, each manned by an experienced doctor. They had their shingles out too. Dr. Ben Dover, Dr. Butterfinger, Dr. Goldfinger, and the one I got; Dr. Chubby Finger. But you know what, in retrospect it’s an important thing and a small price to pay because one in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, but the survival rate when detection is early is over 95%. Most victims of prostate cancer are over the age of 65. The average age of a Corvette owner is 61. Think about it, and join us again next year for Cruisin’ for a Cure, even if you don’t want to do the DRE part, it’s a great cause and a really good time.

Once again, PCC’S annual pilgrimage to the seaside village of Cambria, on California’s central coast, was a resounding success. We descended on Moonstone Beach’s Sea Otter Inn for a long weekend of revelry, wine tastings, ice cream tastings, Scarecrow sightings, elephant seal watching, shopping along Main Street and just plain relaxing with our PCC friends. Some members visited Hearst Castle, some drove up to Ragged Point, while others toured the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. The club has been making this trip the first weekend in October for about twenty years now and it never gets old. Our lodging was right across the street from the ocean, where there is a beautiful long & meandering boardwalk from which to enjoy the view, the sea otters, seals and dolphins. We were lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins on Sunday morning, frolicking very close to shore and we spent over an hour enjoying their antics. This trip was so big that it’s been divided into several parts.

Part One: The Caravans. There were a few caravans making their way up the coast on Thursday morning. No matter our route, we all fell victim to slow traffic and roadwork. We led the “official” caravan of about a baker’s dozen of beautiful Corvettes. Our freeway experience wasn’t bad but on the backroads through Ojai, we were twice slowed to a stop by flagmen, signaling the road was down to one lane, thus

making us wait until it was safe to proceed. We stopped at Padaro Beach Grill for a tasty lunch and then made it to Cambria in time for “happy hour.” Some members were already there to greet us. Others trickled in a bit later. Barbara Gildner did a terrific job coordinating all of the rooms. Due to her hard work & diligence, the Sea Otter was 100% PCC; no interlopers finagled their way in. We had some overflow go to the neighboring hotels.

Part Two: Winery Visits and Lunch on Friday. This event was hosted by Dan & Patty Beadle, who led the way in their gorgeous new 2017 red, white & blue Corvette. Dave Hennings wrote the article about this event. Part Three: Ray & I hosted a drive to the historic Village of Arroyo Grande where we had lunch at the Rooster Creek Tavern followed by a short walk down Main Street to sample the unusual ice cream flavors at Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab. On the way to Arroyo Grande, we first stopped at Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach. Joyce Uchino wrote the article to share her take on this unusual stop. Part Four: Scarecrow Festival / “Wait ‘til the Cows Come Home” Saturday night we all dined together at Indigo Moon, hosted by Jan & Gary Lane. Featuring delicious food in a beautiful setting with a relaxed atmosphere, we had much fun and many laughs. Big thanks to the Lanes for planning & coordinating the dinner. Afterwards, we went back to the Sea Otter to close out the evening. Some sat outside smoking cigars, tasting whiskey, while others went to the Gildner’s hospitality suite to play some wacky games of Bingo, hosted by Cate & Harvey Riggs. PCC showed how teamwork makes for a great weekend. We once again thank the Gildners, the Lanes, the Beadles, the Riggs and yours truly (the Marshalls) for coming together to plan and host these events for the club. “Bye Bye Miss American Pie,” see you next year!

Cambria Wine Tasting By Dave Hennings

Let’s give a hardy thanks to Dan and Patty Beadle for the

great job of planning our Friday wine tasting during our

Cambria weekend. The caravan planning was almost

flawless and everyone made it to all the wineries without

any issues. We had many onlookers admiring our line of

Corvettes as we passed by.

The first winery was Le Vigne which also hosted a fantastic lunch with pizza, several

cheeses and salami. The wine tasting was done as we ate our lunch. There was plenty

of food for everyone. It is one of the better wineries in the Paso Robles area. I have

not been to another winery with a better selection of fine cheeses some of which we

sampled for lunch. Le Vigne also has some great premium wines at a premium price.

Next we caravanned to Calcareous Winery, following Peachy Canyon Road which was

full of hairpin curves and fun to drive. Calcareous Winery sits on top of a hill with

beautiful views. They also had great wine at a premium price. Anyone who loves wine

as much as I do doesn’t mind paying a premium price for a great wine. All thirty one

people in our group looked as though they having a great time. After the wine tasting

at Calcareous we were on our own for our next stop.

Some of us chose to go to Shale Oak Winery near Hwy 46 on the way back to Cambria.

Shale Oak makes my favorite zinfandel and is a very modern and earth friendly winery.

We all gathered around outside sofas for our wine tasting. It was a full day that started

at 10 a.m. and we finally got back to Cambria at about 5:30 p.m.

A great trip for all PCC members. Here is a small sample of the fun activities that took place on our trip to the Dinosaur Caves Park with Nancy and Ray. We were all wondering about a trip to a little park but once there, we could see why. On the cliff in Pismo Beach, we parked as usual: a beautiful line of Corvettes. Then on towards the park (quick run to the rest rooms) where there was

a very colorful cow (fake of course), painted in every color of the rainbow.

From there, on to the “playground” where Dinosaur Mom had the big open empty eggs around her.

Well, that’s when it happened! We all became little kids in the Park, climbing inside the eggs, riding in the boat – what fun!

Join us next year for all the fun!

On Friday morning, after the winery caravan departed, our caravan of ten cars took off in search of ice cream. Driving down Highway 1, we enjoyed beautiful coastal scenery as we wended our way to the Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach.

From there, it was a quick eight minute drive to our destination: the quaint historic village of Arroyo Grande. This charming village is rich in history, with many buildings dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The main street is dotted with shops, restaurants, pubs and boutiques. Newlywed Jeff Jaeggi was not permitted to enter “Guitar Heaven” on strict orders from his wife Sherry. She knew trouble when she saw it. After a tasty lunch at the Rooster Creek Tavern, named for the numerous roosters & chickens strutting around loose in the village, we gathered at the “Town Square” behind the restaurant. The crowing of the roosters lured us as we gawked and took their pictures. As long as anyone can remember, the roosters have had the run of the town. There are many “Chickens Crossing” signs throughout. We saw fancy chicken coops and rooster condos. The Village also boasts the last “swinging bridge” in California. Some of our braver members tested it out. The sign warned us that the limit was five people at a time. Bridge over the River Kwai ?

We all strolled to our final destination: Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab, a real old fashioned ice cream parlor offering hand crafted ice cream. In addition to traditional flavors, many of us sampled some of the unique flavors. I will vouch for the “Merlot Raspberry Truffle.” In honor of our cars, some of us had the popular “Motor Oil.” Ray tried “Straight to the Dentist” so he could tell our PCC dentist Bob Kluss about it. When we saw the “Elvis Special” we thought of Nancy & Steve Radigan, who are big Elvis fans. Doc Burnstein’s is an amazing place. Check out their “Periodic Table of Ice Cream” and their “Hall of Flavors.” We all fulfilled our ice cream cravings, and as Ray likes to point out: “Ice cream is one of the major food groups.”

Welcome to the Racers Corner. We hope it will become a monthly fixture in the PCC newsletter. Several of us in the club engage in activities with our cars that allow us to explore and experience the true capabilities of the Corvette. This includes open track days on large road courses like Fontana, Willow Springs, and Buttonwillow; Autocross; Drag Racing; Standing mile (and a half); and Road Rallying. The aim of this monthly column is to entice more members of PCC to join the club racers, improve your driving experience, impart some useful as well as useless but interesting information, and share in the fun. Everyone is of course invited to contribute. For this first column I want to report on our recent trip to Mojave spaceport for the Mojave Magnum, which is a standing mile and half straight down the runway, as fast as you can go. It’s not as easy as it sounds, particularly with a manual transmission. Ray Marshall, Gene Insley and I all missed shifts, but we all also got to go over 170mph. Ray hit 180 and I went a tad faster but not much. Saturday, when I ran, the day featured a very high density altitude (about 6000ft) and a 15mph headwind. Sunday, Ray and Gene had a hot day but no wind. It makes a difference. The higher the density altitude the less oxygen the car has to work with and that robs horsepower. This is particularly true with a supercharged car that is tuned for sea level. Also, above 170 our cars start to be severely limited by drag and the only way to overcome that is less drag or more horsepower. Since it is probably not wise to start taking off body parts that keep our cars from flying away, the only thing left is horsepower, and at these speeds the gains are small. My C7 Z06 with all of its horsepower is only about 10mph faster than Ray’s C6 Z06 under identical conditions. However, there is a simple modification for the C7 that adds 46HP and 36 foot pounds of torque. That’s an increase you will definitely feel. It’s an aFe-Power cold air intake system. It’s under $600, doesn’t void your warranty, and the ECM will self-tune over about 200 miles without throwing codes. Every C7 Z06 at the event that was touching 190mph had one. Not much help on a normally aspirated car but if you have a supercharger you just have to get one of these. I mean, like, who doesn’t need 700 horsepower? Mine came in yesterday. By the way, Las Vegas Corvettes have really thrown down the gauntlet when it comes to racing. It’s a big active club like ours but more than half of the club participates in some kind of high performance event. They had 27 members at the Mojave Magnum. We had 3.

There are all kinds of racing opportunities coming up over the next couple of months. For track days check out www.speedventures.com. They run great, safe events and specialize in beginners who have never driven on a track with plenty of instructors available. Upcoming open track days include: Willow Springs road course on October 22nd Streets of Willow Springs on October 29th & 30th Auto Club Speedway (Fontana) on November 5th & 6th Streets of Willow Springs on December 3rd Willow Springs road course on December 11th Speedventures also puts on a nice autocross event and that will also be at Fontana on November 5th & 6th. Perhaps we can get a group to sign up for Fontana on the 5th or 6th. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested at [email protected]. Speaking of autocross, the C5 is probably the best autocross car ever built in its class (even better than the C7). We will discuss autocross in detail and SCCA autocross, which is big boy serious autocross, in next month’s column.

We all know that all PCCers drive great looking cars and they’re fast, right? After all the car rags tell us about ever decreasing 0-to-60 speeds and top-ends in the 180+ mph area, not to mention cornering capabilities

comparable to the best roller coaster at Six Flags. Fact is, however, we seldom get to really test our own cars or personal capabilities other than a few quick blasts through a couple of gears before fear of the local gendarmes descending upon us. Thanks to Ray Marshall and his ever enduring need-for-speed, I became aware of an opportunity this past weekend which was taken up by Bob Rose, Ray and me. While Ray and I attended the Sunday running of the Mojave Magnum, Bob ran on Saturday due to a scheduling conflict; he’ll provide his results separately. The Mojave Magnum is a twice/year event at the Mojave Airport which just happens to have a 12.5K foot runway that allows a flat out acceleration run for 1.5 miles and if you’re fortunate, a full mile to reign in your vehicle. You can run any vehicle you desire as long as it passes basic safety requirements, but first timers (like me) will be limited to the 180 mph class, like that’s too slow!

In order to make sure we arrived in time and would not be stuck in a long line for tech review Sunday morning, Ray and I decided to drive to beautiful downtown Mojave the day before racing. As luck would have it rooms were available at Le Grande Chateau Six, frequently referred to as Hotel Six in the area. After relaxing in our individual Suites, we lunched at a local eatery renowned for its non-returning clientele.

Since tech inspection would not occur until 7:00 Saturday evening, we decided to drive to the famous railroad Tehachapi Loop. As trains cannot ascend slopes exceeding about 2 degrees, loops had to be built that will allow trains to make a few extended loops in order to proceed up the steep grade. The part I found most amazing is the loop system was designed and built by over 3000 laborers in the 1870’s.

The town of Tehachapi was in the midst of their Fall Apple Festival so we decided to investigate, driven primarily by thirst. Nice town that was very busy and a potential for a future PCC event. The beer garden was found to be acceptable. Sunday race day started very early in order to get in line before the 6:30 gate opening. As a rookie I had to participate in a 7:15 safety orientation and slow speed (70 mph) track drive. Safety was emphasized as bad things can happen at speed when one does not think about their actions and knowing the most basic of safety precautions. This was unfortunately demonstrated as racing began and a bike traveling at over 180 mph failed to back off the throttle and brake before experiencing the desert. He was heli-vac’d quickly and fortunately only suffered a few broken bones. This shut down the course for 2 hrs for clean-up and an additional all-driver meeting to re-emphasize safety precautions. I must admit at this point I was a bit apprehensive as to whether it would be the car or I that limited the final speed. The runway has several tar strips and corresponding bumps so I thought I might hold the speed down in the 140 area on my first run to “feel-out” the experience. While I had traveled at my goal of 170 I had never driven at that pace so perhaps caution would be the wiser choice. NAH……………… Ray’s first run preceded me so I had no idea as to his speeds before launching. The first three gears went by very quickly, fourth took me past the 1.0 mile mark and as I shifted into fifth I could see the 1.5 mile finish line approaching rapidly. I had only watched the tach and the speed did not seem all that high, the car was performing flawlessly so I just held on, kept the peddle down till crossing the finish line. Just before crossing the line I glanced down and saw a speed of 168 flash by so I felt a combination of satisfaction, relief and glad to be slowing down.

Upon arrival at the timing booth to get the official results I was ecstatic upon learning my first (and ultimately fastest) run was at 173.6 mph. Told Ray as my target had been exceeded I’d be happy if I didn’t’ have any additional runs. Fortunately I made two more runs with a tight grouping even with a missed 2-3 shift on run #2. Ray’s and my detailed run data at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 miles follows: Ray 0.5 1.0 1.5 Gene 0.5 1.0 1.5 Run 1 - 106.2 148.6 169.1** 139.3 161.8 173.6 Run 2 - 139.3 163.6 178.8 132.0 157.6 171.2** Run 3 - DNF (180+) *** 137.5 159.5 172.4 ** Missed shift *** Broke out over 180 limit by reported <.1 mph All in all it was a great experience. Kinda fun driving home on the freeway at 73 mph and realizing its 100 mph slower than you had just driven. Question is “Will I do it again?” Fact is the measured splits show the mph gains after the first 0.5 mile mark was quite limited indicating she was close to her final capabilities as top-end speed is limited by power and aero. The C7 design is quite slippery aerodynamically so power seems to be the most likely answer to more speed. At this time it’s an open question. There will be another gathering of the Mojave Magnum in April so note on your calendar for a future fun and fast experience.
