PRESIDENT’S LETTER ______________________________________________________________________

The View from the Porch was one of a bustling club enjoyinga gorgeous summer! Gene DeFreitas’ sophomore year was agreat success thanks to his diligent efforts and the blessings

of Mother Nature. We haven’t seen the snack bar that busy in years! The lunches Gene and hishard-working staff turned outday after day were consistentlytasty and his Grill Nightsbrought people out in droves. We are very lucky that Genehas agreed to return for nextsummer. Gary Knapp and hiscrew also deserve specialthanks for all their help inpulling off all of our events.

We kicked off the seasonwith our annual MemorialDay Cocktail party. This always brings out most of themembership as we emergefrom our winter hibernationand prepare for a great summerahead. We had a terrific night for the annual July dinner-dance, AnEvening by the Sea, where guests enjoyed a delicious dinner by Culinary Studio and some serious dancing late into the night. Wehope to have even more members join us for this special Beach Clubtradition next year.

We tried something new this year, adding Sunset Cocktails to our

calendar, which proved to be a great success, bringing out a diversegroup of members to enjoy one of our favorite summer evening pastimes. Some of our Lantern Suppers were well-attended, whilesome were not. They have been a wonderful part of the Beach Club’s

history and are a terrific wayto enjoy our beautiful cluband good friends. We plan toadjust the menus and encour-age more members to attendin 2015.

As usual, our Kids’ Nightswere fun-filled and well- attended. They are a great wayfor our children to enjoy theclub outside of their busydays, and also a good way forpeople to introduce friends tothe club.

The House Committee islooking forward to planningour Summer 2015 events overthe winter. I have loved

working with the House Committee and the Board over the last fewyears, but leave you in the capable hands of Sarah Trust. She will bringher bright personality and gift for event planning to the Committeefor another successful season in 2015. Thank you.

Sandra Lessing, House Committee Chair

The Buildings & Grounds team made great progress duringthe 2014 season, completing a great many planned improve-ments while enhancing the safety and comfort of our mem-

bership. The north-facing bulkhead was fully restored, protectingCourts 1, 2 and 3 from the ravages of winter storms and related ero-sion. The pilings for our main dock were replaced and relocated toincrease the depth of water at the dock. A new coat of paint for theclubhouse and its many appurtenances (fences, gates, railings, furni-ture, planters) gave everything a much fresher look. The gravel drive-way between the pool and tennis courts was widened, re-curbed andre-graveled, and the spectator stands by all the courts were re-builtand re-canopied. A major upgrade to the watering system for the ten-nis courts allowed mid-day sprinkling of three courts at once duringthe periods of heaviest use during the summer, making for a signifi-cant improvement to the quality of the court surfaces.

The newly formed Grounds Committee (Jane White, NinaMuller, Sealy Hopkinson and Eduardo Lacroze) came up with a lovelyand balanced plan for finishing the Cottage and its fences and yard, sprucing up the entrance and exit of the Club, and generally provid-ing the loving attention that the Club’s grounds and plantings de-serve. For budgetary reasons, the implementation is time-phased, butwe got a good start over the season with trees in the cottage yard andplantings along the Land Alliance fence. That was a challenge, findingplantings that will be beautiful to look at as we drive by them while

being native plants that will withstand the harsh conditions ofdrought, flood, salt, intense heat and brutal cold. As the plants ma-ture, they will become quite colorful and add to the inviting appear-ance of our grounds.

The biggest project, dredging the lagoon under the finger piers, ismoving ahead slowly. Our plan calls for deepening the area under thedocks, straightening out the sand spit and restoring the groin on thewest side of the spit to slow the drift of sand moving south and intothe lagoon. The North Shore Land Alliance (owner of the lagoon it-self ) has approved the plan in concept, and we have consulted withthe NYS DEC, who have given us guidance on the permittingprocess. We have retained an engineer to plan and carry out soil sam-pling; assuming there are no issues with that, we hope to submit ourapplication in January. Based on what we know of the process, it’spossible (but not a sure thing) that we could dredge next spring(2015) during the short season when it can be done without disturb-ing the maritime and bird life that depends on the shore area forbreeding. Interestingly, Eagle Dock, to our south, has lost most of itsbeach, so (at their request) we are intending to deposit the “clean”sand coming off the spit over there.

A big vote of thanks to our small, hard-working staff, whose lovingcare keeps this club the unique and special place it is. We all owe thema huge debt of gratitude!

Mark Hopkinson, Building & Grounds Committee Chair

As the Saturday of the Janeway Regatta approached, ten AtlanticClass Sloops had assembled at our beloved Club over thecourse of the two preceding weeks and two more were sailing

from Cedar Point Yacht Club the morning of the event. Twelve boatsin total were in attendance, one of the largest fleets we have seen inthe last ten years.

Only one problem faced us, a forecasted Indian summer weekend, with less than 5 knots of breeze predicted for both days! The Janewayis planned to be a three race regatta, with a minimum two races beingneeded to constitute a regatta and award the trophy. We amendedthe race instructions to have one race constitute a regatta on Fridayafternoon hoping we would be able to get one race in.

Saturday Morning we all loaded on to our Atlantics and weretowed out into the sound, in hopes that a breeze would fill in — wewould be on the course if it did. Harry Morgan once again served asour Presiding Race Officer, being assisted by Sue Morgan, Amy Wag-ner and Mike Kolodner: a great big thanks to all of you for volun-teering your time. Harry astutely saw a light easterly breezedeveloping, got a course set and had us started without wasting anyof the precious time the wind would stick around. The breeze stayedfairly consistent in velocity and direction for three legs of the race, but on the fourth it started to die and Harry shortened the course atthe last leeward mark. The wind proved to be just enough to get all12 boats across the finish line. Scott Reichelm from Cedar Point onA-142 Shucks battled it out with Norm Peck III of Niantic Bay, sailinga chartered A-133 Waypoint, for first and second respectfully; Stephen

Jay who was as deep as eighth at one point early in the race fought allthe way back to take third place.

We stuck around hoping the wind would fill back in, which itdid not, and the highlight of the day was proving the long held beliefthat the Captain Bonnell could tow twelve Atlantics at speed, whichit did! Harry Morgan reported that it seemed to run at a lower tem-perature towing twelve boats than it does without.

Dinner Saturday night was enjoyed by all and by some too much!Sunday was even lighter than Saturday, so we postponed while stillashore. Eventually, we called it a day around noon and the visitingboats towed back across theSound.

Next summer, after a 5 yearhiatus, the CSHBC Atlanticfleet will be hosting the Na-tional Championship Regattaon September 17, 18 & 19th.We look forward to the returnof our visiting yachtsmanfriends, and we will be recruit-ing Club members as volun-teers to help us run such a largeand important regatta.

2014 JANEWAY INVITATIONAL REGATTA ________________________________________________

The summer 2014 will long be remembered as one of the bestin a long time, and the fine weather set the stage for a fabuloustennis season.

In late 2013, the Tennis Committee set a number of ambitiousgoals for 2014. These were focused on improving the tennis infra-structure, increasing participation at all levels with new events andprograms, and resurrecting those traditions that have made the BeachClub so unique and special.

We started on an ominous wet and stormy evening at the SpringTennis Cocktail Party, which set the stage, fortunately, for a great sea-son. Chris Warner and his assistant pros – Ben Marks, Ronnie Hule-witz and Maria Barrigan – did a fabulous job upgrading and directingour tennis programs. Under Chris’s leadership, we added junior andadult clinics and introduced new events, plus throughout the seasonhad some fun Mixers, all of which were well received. At all levelsand ages, the tennis participation significantly increased.

To mention a few summer-of-2014 highlights, Ray and NancySchuville helped us bring back the 2nd Longest Day of the YearMixer. Newt Burkett and Rob Muller hosted Demo Day, and we hadour first Beach Club Cup, won by Jay Burkett in the A Division andJohn Noesen in the B Division.

At all our Beach Club tournaments, the quality of play and level

of competition was the best in years. Our Ladies Teams had a fineseason with some truly memorable matches. And with the persistentefforts of John Sands, we had a number of Inter-Club ChallengeMatches between us, the Bath Club and the Huntington CrescentClub.

Thanks to Gary Knapp and his team for installing our new auto-matic water sprinkler system. With so little rain this summer coupledwith the increase in court play, this upgrade was key to maintainingthe courts in good condition throughout the day.

As you know, Chris Warner, after five years, will not be returningnext season, and we appreciate all his efforts and his dedication to el-evating our tennis programs, not only for adults, but also for juniors. We are in the process of selecting a new Director of Tennis whosegoal will be to continue improving the Beach Club Tennis Programsfor our children and to get us all out on the courts playing and havingfun.

We would like to thank the Gokey and Walton families for hous-ing our assistant pros. We all owe them a huge thanks for their gen-erosity and support. We are already looking forward to next seasonand getting back on the courts.

Peter White, Tennis Committee Chair

The goal of the Junior Programs is to introduce our children,in an enjoyable manner, to a variety of lifetime sports and ac-tivities. Starting in Sports Group and continuing through

Swimming and Diving, Junior Sailing, and Novice and Junior Tennisprograms, we encourage children to try a variety of activities. Ourfocus is always to make them feel comfortable and competent in thewater, on the dock, in the pool and on the tennis court so they canfully and truly enjoy what our club has to offer.

We emphasize sportsmanship, self-esteem, teamwork, and skill de-velopment to each child’s level of ability. Our well-rounded programsseek to develop active, proficient, fit, respectful and considerate youngmen and women as upstanding members of CSHBC who will con-tinue using and enjoying the skills they develop in the Junior Pro-grams for years to come.

The summer of 2014 had 161 participants in the various JuniorPrograms! Sports Group had 110 children, including 14 grandchil-dren enrolled this summer. Thank you to the dynamite directors,Stacy Levine-Kerley and Cassidy Wolfert, and to their awesome coun-selors for a fabulous six weeks. Special thanks to Sarah Adler and hercommittee for their tireless commitment to this most valuable pro-gram at the club.

August Mini-Camp followed SportsGroup under the direction of Dan Kelly and his staff. For three weeks26 children enjoyed swimming, arts-and-crafts and tennis clinics.

Our Junior Sailing Program had 45 participants this summer, in-cluding five guest sailors. This program is now recognized in the com-munity for its excellence, and we will continue to welcome qualifiedchildren to join us, whether club members or not. Endless thanks to

Suzanne DiMaio and her committee. New Junior Sailing DirectorMike Benchimol and his team of seasoned instructors were a phe-nomenal addition to the club program, and we look forward to theirreturn. And, of course, many thanks to Club Manager Gary Knappfor all of his patience and hard work in support of Junior Sailing.

Swimming and Diving had a total of 86 children this summer. The CSHBC Swim Team achieved their third undefeated dual meetseason! Under new Diving Coach Kyle Rooney, our Divers won theirChampionship meet vs. Piping Rock Club and the Swim Team placed2nd at their Champs (only behind PRC, and not by much!). Thankyou to Dan Kelly and staff. Many thanks to Elisa Reardon and herCommittee. They have done a great job!

Tennis Director, Chris Warner leaves us after five great summers.Thank you to Chris and his awsome staff of Ben, Ronnie, Maria,Nick and George. 76 children participated in tennis this summer. The implementation of the new Novice/Junior Academy four days aweek and the Elite clinics provided great training for our serious play-ers. CSHBC also hosted the 65th annual North Shore Tournamentwith 67 players from six clubs. Thanks to Henriette Lacroze andMargie Burkett for coordinating and Liz Bressel and her Junior TennisCommittee.

Junior Activities Programs continue to thrive thanks to all the vol-unteers, staff, parents, and the children themselves. Support, encour-agement and feedback from the membership is what makes thispossible. We all appreciate the spirit and philosophy of CSHBC andare working together to preserve and enhance this unique and specialplace for our children, our families and all of our members’ enjoy-ment.

ATLANTIC CLASS NOTES __________________________________________________________________

2014 was the second summer in a row that we had winds in Cold SpringHarbor far better than the norm for our Atlantic racing. Our fleet is small, but strong and active, with over

20 days of racing happening over thecourse of the season. A-148 Alliancewent to nationals this summer, whichwas held at Cedar Point Yacht Club inthe fickle August Long Island Soundwinds. Stephen Jay and the Allianceteam, which included Beach Clubalumnus Art Rousmaniere, did a greatjob scoring as high as third in individ-ual races, but ended up seventh overall, half a boat length out of fifth due to abit of bad luck.

Writing this reminds me that summer is over (despite ourrecent warm weather) and the kids are well ensconced inschool activities. It never ceases to amaze me how fast the

summer goes. That being said, what a wonderful summer it was onthe tennis courts!

I’d like to thank Henriette Lacroze and Margie Burkett for chair-ing the North Shore Tennis Tournament in June. As always it was abig success, and the Beach Club made a good showing. It was a fan-tastic start to the 2014 season.

This year there were some big changes in the Novice/Junior pro-gram. We had the first-ever tennis academy, held in the mornings. From 9-10:30, our children worked hard to improve their strokes andtheir competitive play. Clinics in the afternoons reinforced these skills.Overall, our children could be seen playing tennis throughout muchof the day.

As for the Club Championships, our Novice Singles winners wereAllison Futter and Will Spehr. Jillian Futter and Oscar Como tookhome the Junior Singles Titles. Novice Doubles was won by JohannesBressel and Will Spehr for the boys and Allison Futter and AshleyHewitt for the girls. Dasha Arthur and Jillian Futter took home theJunior Girls Doubles title and Oscar Como and Henry Como wonthe Junior Boys Doubles.

Congratulations to everyone! And a huge thank you to Ben, Ronnie, Maria, George and Nick for another wonderful season onthe courts! The Junior Tennis Committee would like to give a veryspecial thank you to Chris who has worked tirelessly to provide ourchildren with a fabulous tennis program through the years. We wishhim all the best in his future endeavors — he will be sorely missed!

If you were at the Beach Club any time during the summer, youmust have seen the happy faces of the children in Sports Group. All the campers had a fun-filled summer, swimming, playing ten-

nis, sailing and much more. In six weeks they were able to fit in a trip to a Ducks game, an all-

camp bonfire, an overnight at Wild Wood State Park, a canoe trip, avisit from Soundwaters and a fishing trip at Captree State Park. Anew addition to the Porpoise program was a trip to the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course wherethe campers received individualinstruction from the golf pro.The 2nd and 3rd year Porpoiseswent paddle boarding and had abike ride at Caumsett State Park. All campers also saw a greatshow by a scientist from MadScience and Katie’s Puppets.

The Beach Club’s famous Pirate Week was so much fun, with scavenger hunts and a tripto the Laurel Hollow beach tosearch for buried treasure. It’s agood thing our counselors rescued the treasure before thepirates left! They were able toleave a piece of the treasure, filled with goodies, for each camper!

During the last week, everybody participated in an All CampColor War. Each camp group was divided into black and red teamsthat competed in laughter-filled events like a spoon relay and a bucketfilling contest. The competition was fierce and very evenly matched,so everyone received a treat — no matter who won, we were all winners, and everyone worked hard and had so much fun!

There is no better way to end the summer than with a visit fromthe Pet Den’s many animals, followed by the Sports Group Dinnerwith a slide-show from each group in camp. It was a magical evening, and we rejoice in having so many talented kids here at the BeachClub!

Each day, the campers spend much of their time playing tennis, sailing and swimming. Dan and his staff at the pool worked veryclosely with Sports Group, which contributed in a major league way

to making this summer as success-ful as it was. Chris Warner, thehead tennis pro, worked so hardwith the Sports Group camperson the courts – you could see vast improvement in the each of thekids by the end of the program. We were all so excited to workwith Mike Benchimol in his first summer running the sailing pro-gram. What a great addition tothe program!!

The Sports Group committeeis an essential part of makingSports Group what it is. A greatbig thanks goes to Anne Pace,Ashley O’Keefe, Sarah Trust, Kristen Robillard, Joanna

Bradford, Anna Hall, Michelle Celestino, Kim Gore, Jeanne Rolih,Emily Moriarty and Alexandra Murray. This year we had 15 of themost amazing and energetic counselors led by co-directors Stacey and Cassidy. We are already counting the days to next summer to seewhat new and exciting things they have planned for sports group2015!

Wow, what a Summer! Most years, we sit around waiting for the wind to blow up, but this season started with a bang. We had heavywinds the first week, even up to 25 knots, which led to a ton of excitement, many capsizing boats and lots of fun. And the wholerest of the Summer turned out to be one of the best in recent years, with very little rain and great wind most of the time. As a

result, our kids sailed a lot!Our new Director of Sailing, Mike Benchimol, led a great team of instructors whose love and unbridled enthusiasm for sailing was felt

throughout the club. Our kids challenged themselves, learning new skills and tactics, and everyone achieved their own personal victories. Ourkids not only sailed their own boats but they also got a taste of things to come by sailing Pixels, Optis, 420s, Lasers and even Mike’s ownSnipe. Our instructors kept things exciting and fun by making each day dif-ferent, and it showed in the smiling faces that came off the water each day.

The sailing at home was great but the sailing on the road was even bet-ter. Our Pixel and 420 girls went to more regattas this year than at any timein the recent past, including Western Districts, Larchmont Race Week andthe Pequot Invitational. Congratulations to Sarah Wallin, Amanda Burkettand Emma Bliven, who went to the Northport Make-a-Wish Regatta andbrought home the first place trophy! Our Opti sailors were busy too. Oursailors went to Centerport and Head of the Harbor with five kids qualifyingfor Optimist Championships. Our program will continue to grow, and weexpect next year to be even better!

With Fall upon us, and Thanksgiving around the corner, wehave so much to be grateful for, especially the AMAZINGSummer we all shared together at the CSHBC!

The weather was ideal for the Junior Swimming and Divingteams!!! First, we kicked the summer off with our 2nd annual PolarBear Plunge, which is always a crowd pleaser, and it ended with thefamily-bonding Harbor and 1,000 yard swims! Under the leadership

of our Aquatic Director Dan Kelly, Assistant Director Kelly Smith,Diving Coach Kyle Rooney and our superb staff of lifeguards andcoaches, participation continues to grow on the swim team every year.We had a sweeping 63 swimmers and 12 divers!

We have now been Dual Meet Champs for three years running! Our swimmers continue to master their strokes and get better andbetter every year!!! All fingers were crossed this year against Piping atChampionships – we were so close – closing the gap with only a 30point difference. Next year is OUR year to win! All of the swimmersshould be commended for their team spirit, efforts and strong com-mitment to the swim team!

Four North Shore Swimming Records were broken this year, byAlison Futter in the 11&12 year-old 25-yard backstroke; Claire

Futter in the 11&12 year-old 25 yard Butterfly; Carsten Bressel inthe 11&12 year-old 25 yard Backstroke; and Alice Bradford and Al-ison Futter in the co-ed 11&12 year-old 100 yard Freestyle Relay.

The Diving team had a superb year too and won the DivingChampionships! We also held a fun and friendly “intramural” divingcompetition, with many of the children participating as well as somebrave parents.

Over Labor Day weekend, 19 members competed in the HarborSwim. The Higgins Family are the brave ones that completed the en-tire swim together! We also had approximately 60 swimmers partic-ipate in the 1,000 Yard Swim. It is a very popular event, and this yearfive families earned an award for full participation—the Dennehey,Pace, Byrne, Spehr and Reardon families!

The CSHBC is a very special community, providing so manytreasured memories while sharing traditions from one year to thenext!!! I was honored to have the “Best Committee Ever!” I had somuch fun and appreciate the time and effort that Sarah Adler, EileenByrne, Liz Bressel, Kristin Dennehy, Kathe James, Annmarie Tighe,Joanna Bradford, Susie Futter and Kristen Kisner put in!

In May, a dozen lady sailors, representing three clubs, ventured forthree days to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor to im-prove their skills. With both classroom and hands-on training,

we learned to maneuver around tall ships, between floating logs andover huge swells, protected by the vigilanceof our Off Shore Sailing School instructors. We successfully competed for elbow roomamong the tankers, ferries and tour boats, dodging low flying helicopters and highspeed police patrols armed with machineguns, because the President was in town.

The Hyatt Hotel, in Jersey City, servedas our headquarters, while our Colgate 26training boats were located in Liberty Land-ing State Park. The weather was terrible:cold, rainy, and windy; but we had a won-derful time, improved our technique, over-came our fears and sealed our friendships through shared misery. Butwe will never again be scared by windy days in Cold Spring Harborafter having survived the “big city breakers.”

We ended the racing season in September when the Beach Clubhosted the annual Morgan Cup. This trophy celebrates friendly com-petition between Lady Sailors from a number of yacht clubs aroundLong Island Sound. Each club was asked to supply crews for two

Sonars, i.e. 8 women. The competitors drew lots to select their 23foot Sonars, and their combined score from three races determinedthe winner.

The cup was won by Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in a closeduel with Indian Harbor Yacht Club ofGreenwich. The CSH Beach Club spon-sored the Race Committee judges; assistedwith the mark and spectator boats; providedlaunch service over to Seawanhaka to pickup the fleet of Sonars; and arranged a deli-cious picnic lunch on the North Porch. Spe-cial thanks to George Lindsay, Gary Knapp,John Devine and Gene DeFreitas for theirhelp arranging the event for us.

During the summer, the Ladies Sailingprogram participated in over 24 formalraces, complete with lunch and “chalk talk”

seminars, an afternoon swimming party and evening picnic cruise.Over the winter we stay in touch with visits to museums, vineyardsand historic sites. All Beach Club ladies, whether experienced ornovice, are invited to join us on the water next year.
