THE PRESENTS

From musn nd dretor Ktherne Morley

Composed by Paul Rissmann

Set Design by Karen Tennent

Lighting by Sergey Jakovsky

Produced by Tim Nunn

Marketing by Ruth Marsh

For: 6-18 month old babies and their adult

company

There’s a beginning, a middle and an end. But

this isn’t a normal story. There’s a him and

a her and lots of others – all watching bright

eyed.

A tiny present appears, all wrapped up and

shiny. What is it?

Listen, the present is singing. Where does

that sound come from?

 There’s a pause, a focus, curiosity. A pin

drops…

The shiny paper falls open and there’s a rabbit

with a oppy neck.

The stripy paper tears apart and here is a

brand new bath duck.

The white paper shimmers and grows a eld

of lavender.

The furry paper growls and starts to lap some

milk.

Amongst the stillness there are repeated

smiles and giggles.

Presents... We can hear them. We can see

them. If you want to, you can reach out and

touch.

A mesmeric show for fresh eyes and ears.

The

Presents

‘The Presents’ is a performance with minimal

speech and live music, for babies of 6-18

months old and their adult company. It is

performed in an intimate in-the-round space

for a maximum of 25 babies, so that each

audience member can have a front seat view.

Set in a circular, performative play space,

The Presents contains a series of gifts madefrom objects, colour and sung-sound. Led

by four performer-musicians, the journey

of the performance lifts from naturalism

and the everyday, to magic-realism and the

impossible. Some presents are physical and

recognisable, but others unfold as sung-

sound and light that spill out to tell their

‘story’.

A present might move our location to a hillside

for an encounter with a beautiful red deer, or

under the sea, or to caves dancing with light.

Or it might just be a rabbit with a oppy neck.

Performers have a twinkle of quirk about them

and with it, they bring a magic focus and

some beautiful image-stories to the audience.

‘I’ve never seen so many babies focus and sit

transxed for so long’.

A parent in Edinburgh after watching previous

work Katherine has directed for a babyaudience.

Ktherne Morley (Dretor)

Katherine is a new writing director and

creative learning specialist. She is supported

by the Imaginate and Starcatchers network

and has recently received two Imaginate

Inspiration awards to develop her original

ideas. In 2008 she received a Federation of

Scottish Theatre bursary to work with Dougie

Irvine at Visible Fictions on the international

co-production of Peter Pan, which was very

inuential on her practice.

After an Imaginate trip to the Danish+

festival in 2008, Katherine began to develop

specic ideas for young audiences and in

the past two years has brought two early

years touring shows to fruition. The rst

became the very popular R&W production ‘If

I was a Mouse’ for 3-6 year olds.

She took another of those ideas to ScottishOpera where she developed the show

‘BabyO’ with composer Rachel Drury for

6-18 month olds. They piloted the show

on tour in venues and nurseries through

Scotland in 2009 and the show has just

toured again in Spring 2010.

‘The Presents’ is a natural progression in

Katherine’s work as an artist drawing on her

rich experiences as a musician, a director

and early years practitioner.
