Notes ON THE PROGRAMby Deke Sharon
Could there be a more perfect lyric foran a cappella song? Songwriter BiasBoshell agrees, telling me that the SingOff performance captured better than
any other performance his vision forthe song, which came to life in his headone rainy night as he sang and stompedaround the streets of London.
BOSHELL I Got The Music In Me
03-29 DCINY_CH Rental 3/19/15 12:53 PM Page 3
This was originally arranged for NicoleSherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls andthe Tufts Beelzebubs, but at the last
minute she decided to sing a flirtatious“You Don’t Own Me” instead, so thischart gets its debut at Carnegie Hall.
GILL and WADE Heartbreaker
I wasn’t admitted to the Tufts Beelzebubsuntil my third audition, a fact from thebook Pitch Perfect that found its wayinto the movie in the form of a StarWars-loving socially awkward magician
named Benji. Although I have neverperformed a magic trick or owned a sin-gle Star Wars poster, I still get shiverswhen I see Ben step forward in themovie and sing his first solo: “Magic.”
GREEN, REYES, ALLEN/RAY, CUOMO, GOTTWALD BrightLights Bigger City/Magic (from Pitch Perfect)
There’s something uniquely powerfulabout the display of interconnected-ness in a cappella, making a song like
“Use Somebody,” written by fourbrothers, all the more effective.
KINGS OF LEON (The Followills) Use Somebody
It’s no secret that during rehearsals theTreblemakers were providing seriouscompetition and at times more impres-sive than the Barden Bellas. The result?Perpetual calls for “More!” from this
medley/mashup: more key changes, more overlaid melodies, more moments. The result is perhaps the single mostreworked arrangement in my career…butit was worth it.
CORNISH, GOTTWALD, SIMMONS, KELLY/FORSEY,SCHIFF/PEREZ, DEWALL, SMITH Bellas Finale: Price Tag,Don’t You Forget About Me, Give Me Everything (Tonight)(from Pitch Perfect)
Some couples have a song, and mygrandparents Fredrick Decomo andMary Shearin Aisthorpe were no dif-
ferent. The effortless simplicity andpurity of a Berlin song makes you feellike you’re listening to something
IRVING BERLIN Always
People may debate the “best” rockband ever, but when it comes to themost influential, there’s no contest. With each album, and in some caseswith each song, the Fab Four reinvented
themselves. This song is no exception, with a lyric derived from the blues, arhythm section inspired by OtisRedding’s “Respect,” and a hard rocklead vocal.
LENNON and MCCARTNEY Drive My Car

Benny Goodman is credited with givingjazz its official coming out party righthere in Carnegie Hall in 1938, and this
gem, written by a young Louis Primalong before his “Just a Gigolo” andJungle Book days, was the showstopper.
LOUIS PRIMA Sing Sing Sing
Hundreds of years from now, peoplelooking back at our era will most likelyconsider Michael Jackson our greatestperformer. It’s impossible to know
which of his songs will stand the test oftime, but I think there’s a chance ourgreat-great-great grandchildren will besinging “Mama se, mama sa…”
THIAM, TUINFORT, JACKSON Wanna Be Startin Somethin’
Many musicians have performed other’smusic, and sometimes the cover versionis better than the original. If you had topick the single greatest cover in all of
rock music, you’d be hard pressed to dobetter than Joe Cocker’s Woodstockperformance of the Beatles’ “A LittleHelp From My Friends.”
LENNON and MCCARTNEY Help From My Friends
Billy Joel poured his fears and hopesinto this uniquely melancholy andpoignant lullaby, written for his
daughter as he wrestled with the sepa-ration of child and parent that comesfrom divorce.
BILLY JOEL Goodnight My Angel
One of the greatest, most performedand most beloved songs in Americanhistory, this version of the song beganas an audience request at a House Jacksconcert. After improvising both vocals
and a trumpet solo, one of the membersturned to me and remarked that weshould sing the song “for real.” And ithas become the group’s most requestedand performed song in the past decade.
GEORGE GERSHWIN Summertime
My senior year in the Tufts Beelzebubs, after weaving vocal percussion anddense “instrumentalesque” textures intomost of our repertoire, I was chided bymany passionate former members that Iwas “ruining the group” by making the
music too complex and impossible to“woodshed” (casually sing with alums).A decade later I arranged a series of fourpart solo-less pop songs, including this, that remain my most sung arrangementswithin and perhaps without the Bubs.
STEVIE WONDER Signed Sealed Delivered
timeless, like a folk song that hasbeen gently polished and perfected
over centuries, a smooth pebble in astream.

Picture the scene: a corrupt judge whoexiled a young Sweeney, apparently mur-dering his wife and raising his daughterwith no knowledge of his parents,
entering the barbershop of a now insaneand unrecognizable prodigal Sweeneywho finally sees his chance to murder thejudge…as they sing these buoyant lyrics.
STEPHEN SONDHEIM Pretty Women (from Sweeney Todd)
A latter-day entry into the GreatAmerican Songbook by my measure, this is one of the most performed and
recorded songs from the 1980s, with arefreshingly direct and timeless mes-sage.
STEINBERG & KELLY True Colors Originally performed by Cyndi Lauper
Initially only one opening number wasplanned for The Sing Off, for its veryfirst show. However, unlike other singingshows and pageants, a cappella singerslove big numbers. NBC immediately
decided that we needed to have a bigopening number for every show, whichwe have—often right at the top of thehour. This arrangement opened the sea-son one finale.
