ABOUT ANDROS

THE ISLAND OF ANDROS HAS MANY UNDERGROUND SPRINGS AND STREAMS AND CONSEQUENTLY IS ONE OF THE GREENEST AND MOST WOODED OF THE CYCLADES. SPRING WATER IS PLENTIFUL AND PURE IN THE EAST OF THE ISLAND AND THE SARIZA SPRING WATER IS BOT-TLED IN THE VILLAGE OF APOIKIA.

ANDROS IS THE SECOND LARGEST OF THE CYCLADES, NAXOS BEING THE BIG-GEST. IT IS ABOUT 40KM IN LENGTH AND 17KM AT ITS WIDEST POINT. THE HIGHEST PEAK IS MOUNT PETALON, ALMOST 1000M ABOVE SEA LEVEL. ONE OF OUR GUIDED WALKS TAKES US TO THE TOP OF MOUNT PETALON - STUNNING VIEWS.

UNTIL ABOUT 120 YEARS AGO, BATSI WAS JUST A FISHING HARBOUR WITH A FEW HOUSES. THE FISHERMEN TENDED TO LIVE INLAND IN THE SURROUNDING HILLSIDE FARMING VILLAGES. THE PERMANENT POPULATION OF BATSI IS APPROXIMATELY 300, RISING TO SEVERAL THOUSAND DURING THE SUMMER SEASON. THE CENTRE OF ACTIVITY IS THE SQUARE.

FLANKED BY TWO BEACHES, PARAPORTI AND NIMBORIO, THE PENINSULA OF HORA LEADS TO THE RUINS OF A VENETIAN CASTLE AND AN ANCIENT BRIDGE.

CHORA IS THE PRESENT DAY CAPITAL AND HAS BECOME QUITE A COSMOPOLITAN CENTRE, OFFERING SEVERAL MUSEUMS AND EXHIBITIONS, INCLUDING THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND MODERN ART MUSEUMS. WITH A WIDE SELECTION OF SHOPS, CAFES, AND SNACK BARS, MUSEUMS, QUAINT STREETS AND BEAUTIFUL CHURCHES, HORA HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER EVERYONE.

ANDROS TOWN (CHORA)

GAVRION IS THE MAIN PORT OF THE ISLAND OF ANDROS. IT IS A QUIET VILLAGE UNTIL THE FERRIES ARRIVE, WHEN IT BUSTLES INTO LIFE WITH MANY ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES, AND THEN RETURNS TO ITS RELAXED ATMOSPHERE AS SOON AS THE FERRY LEAVES. IT IS HERE THAT THE FERRIES ARRIVING FROM RAFINA DOCK BEFORE GOING ON TO THE NEIGHBOURNIG ISLANDS OF TINOS, MYKONOS, PAROS AND SYROS. THERE ARE SEVERAL GOOD TAVERNAS HERE, AND IT IS PLEASANT TO SIT IN ONE OF THE CAFES AND WATCH THE BUSY HARBOUR AND THE LOCAL FISHING BOATS MAKE A COLOURFUL PICTURE. THERE ARE A HANDFUL OF SOUVENIR SHOPS, AND YOU CAN PURCHASE THE DELICIOUS THYME HONEY THAT IS PRODUCED IN THIS AREA. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF LIVELY BARS IN GAVRION, AND THE TAVERNA AND DISCO MARABOUT IS ABOUT 1KM AWAY, FOR THOSE WHO WANT A LIVELIER EVENING. JUST OUTSIDE GAVRION IS THE BEACH OF AGHIOS PETROS AND THE TOWER OF THE SAME NAME. FURTHER ON ARE THE GOLDEN SANDS AND KYPRI BEACH-ES. ALL OF THEM ARE SANDY AND THERE ARE TAVERNAS NEARBY. ABOVE THE VILLA OF KYPRI IS THE ZOODOCHOU PIGHI («LIFE GIVING SPRING») MONASTERY. IN THE PAST IT WAS A SANCTUARY FOR 1,000 MONKS; IT WAS CONVERTED TO A NUNNERY EARLY IN THE 1900’S AND THERE ARE NOW 3 NUNS IN RESIDENCE. OPEN TO VISITORS IN THE MORNING AND AFTERNOONS.

THE SLEEPY FISHING VILLAGE OF KORTHI WITH ITS WONDERFUL BEACH IS A POPULAR SPOT FOR MANY VISITORS. QUIETER THAN BATSI, BUT WITH SEVERAL GOOD TAVERNAS, CAFES AND HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATION. THE CENTRE OF THE VILLAGE IS PEDESTRIANISED. KORTHI BAY IS PARTICULARLY SUITABLE FOR WIND SURFING. THERE ARE TWO FOLKLORE MU-SEUMS AND A MUSEUM OF WOVEN CRAFT.

A FEW KILOMETRES FROM BATSI ON THE MAIN ROAD TO ANDROS TOWN IS THE VIL-LAGE OF PALEOPOLIS, THE ANCIENT CAPITAL. THERE IS A NEW MUSEUM DISPLAYING MANY OF THE FINDINGS FROM PALEOPOLIS, A COUPLE OF CAFES AND THE BEACH CAN BE REACHED BY 1,039 STEPS!

SITUATED ABOVE THE VILLAGE OF KYPRI, BETWEEN GAVRION AND BATSI. THE MONASTERY WAS ORIGINALLY USED A SCHOOL DURING THE BYZATINE YEARS.

THIS 8TH CENTURY MONASTERY IS SITUATED NORTH OF HORA AT THE HEAD OF THE ACHLA VALLEY. A WORKING MONASTERY WITH A BYZANTINE ICON OF THE VIRGIN MARY AND LOVELY MURALS.

THIS BYZANTINE MONASTERY IS SET ON THE SLOPE OF MOUNT KATAFIGI IN THE CENTRE OF THE ISLAND, AND IS ABOUT 1000 YEARS OLD. ALSO HOUSES A BYZANTINE ICON OF THE VIRGIN MARY.

SITUATED JUST ABOVE THE VILLAGE OF APOIKIA AND CLOSE TO CHORA TOWN.THIS MONASTERY IS THE FAVORITE OF VISITORS FROM CYPRUS.

PSILI AMMOS IS BEAUTIFULLY SANDY, WITH SUNBEDS AND UMBRELLAS AND A SNACK BAR ON THE BEACH. KYPRI BEACH IS ALSO SANDY AND IS AN EXCELLENT ORGANIZED WINDSURFING BEACH AND SCUBA DIVING SCHOOL.

THE MAIN BEACH IN THE RESORT OF BATSI HAS SHALLOW WATER, IS SANDY AND VERY POPULAR DURING HIGH SEASON. UMBRELLAS AND SUN BEDS CAN BE HIRED, WATER SPORTS DURING HIGH SEASON. THERE ARE MANY RESTAURANTS ALONG THE BEACH ROAD.

A SHINGLE/SAND BEACH ABOUT 10 MINUTES WALK FROM THE CENTRE OF BATSI, A SMALL COVE IDEAL FOR SNORKELLING. STIVARI TAVERNA JUST ABOVE OFFERS SHADE, MEALS AND DRINKS.

THESE TWO BEACHES ARE DI-RECTLY BELOW THE HOTEL ANEROUSSA. THEY ARE SANDY AND THE ANEROUSSA BEACH HAS A SNACK BAR. SUN BEDS AND UMBRELLAS ARE AVAILABLE. DELAVOYAS IS THE ONLY NUDIST BEACH.

We pass by the OLYMPIC STADIUM to see the Athens 2004 Olympics main venue. We continue for the CORINTH CANAL (short stop). Drive to EPIDAURUS and visit the Ancient theatre, world famous for its outstanding acoustics. Proceed to NAUPLIO (short stop) and through the plain of ARGOS to arrive in MYCENAE. Visit the archaeological site and the Tomb of Agamem-non. In the afternoon (optional stop for souvenirs) depart for OLYMPIA, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, through the cities of Tripolis and MEGALOPOLIS (short stop). Overnight stay in Olympia.

DAY 2: ATHENS

DAY 5: DELPHI

After breakfast visit the archaeological site with the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, the altar of the Olympic flame,the Stadium and the archaeological Museum. Depart via PATRAS (short stop) to RION, cross the Corinthian bay by the new bridge to ANTIRION. Pass by the city of NAFPAKTOS and from there on, along the coastal road to DELPHI, known in ancient times as the navel of the world. In the afternoon visit the picturesque mountain village of ARACHOVA. Overnight stay in Delphi

ATHENS – OLYMPIA – DELPHI - KALAMBAKA (8 DAYS)

After breakfast leave in the morning for nearby Meteora to visit the BYZANTINE MONASTERIES. Return to Athens passing the heroic monument of Leonidas at THERMOPYLAE. Overnight stay in Athens.

After breakfast our assistant will meet you at hotel’s lobby and pick you up in order to start your HALF DAY ATHENS CITY TOUR INCLUDING ACROPOLIS NEW MUSEUM. At the end of your city tour you will be transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 3: ANDROS

After breakfast our taxi driver will meet you at the hotel’s lobby and pick you up in order to transfer you to Rafina port in order to catch your ferry to Andros. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure

DAY 7: ATHENS

Our taxi driver will meet you at hotel’s lobby and transfer you to ATHENS INTERNATION-AL AIRPORT.

DAY 6: ANDROS - ATHENS

After breakfast our driver will meet you at the hotel’s lobby and pick you up in order to transfer you to Andros port inorder to catch your ferry to Athens. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.
