A Note from the Director

Many years ago I appeared in a production of “Fiddler On The Roof”. I played Hodel, the second daughter, and I had a wonderful time. I made many dear friends in that production, some of whom I

still see from time to time. After the production closed, I had no desire to ever revisit Anatevka. That’s pretty common for actors and directors. We take precious memories away from each show we do and we move on to the next project, but to do the same show again would somehow be anticlimactic. When WVLO an-nounced that they would be doing “Fiddler On The Roof” this season, I rethought that decision to leave Anatevka behind permanently. The idea of playing Golde was very appealing to me. A very short time later, Liz asked if I would be willing to direct the show instead. To be honest, I was torn, but I am very glad I accepted the job as director. I have had so much fun building our village, bringing together its people and embellishing it with details.

Every show I have ever done has taught me something, but as the director of this production, I have learned so much, about the culture, about the history, about the music, and about the traditions. I can also honestly say that this cast and crew have been delightful to work with. I truly hope you enjoy our production as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

Another native Califormian, Leslie is a voice teacher by day and enjoys time with her husband, Peter, and grown children, Patrick and Emily.Barbara Flynn Kelly (Ensemble) Barbara is another newcomer to WVLO, and has two sets of theatrical credits, one from the late 1970’s, early 80’s and a current one. experience she’s been dreaming of for years. By day, Christie is a mobile developer for Pocket Games, and just recently launched Animal Voyage: Island Adventures, which can be found in the App Store. This is one of her favorite musicals and she’s supported musical theatre for over 15 years by working spotlights, on stage crews, in the set shop and in costumes and make-up. She was introduced to the deep theatrical community bond through her children’s involvement and highly encourages everyone to pursue the musical arts. For seven years, she volunteered as a parent coordinator and board member for the CA Youth Symphony and thanks her daughters, Christie and Jenny, for their supportive love and audition coaching. Liz’ background is in electrical engineering developing firmware for hard disk drives for IBM and Hitachi. A veteran folk singer and actor during the 60’s and 70’s, Larry has returned to the stage after his long career as a Technology Recruiter. “Fiddler On The Roof” actually parallels the real life story of his grandparents on both sides who left their homes in little villages near Kiev to escape the horrible pogroms that threatened their region around 1905. They were fortunate to find their way to America and a better life in NYC, free from the tyranny that was spreading across Russia and Europe. Steve has been married to Terri for 25 years and they have two teenage sons and he sends his gratitude to them for all their support!Robert Miguel Solis (Lazar Wolf ) Robert returns for his fourth show with WVLO. His first was Joe in the 1984 production of “Showboat”, and after a 25-year hiatus returned to portray Captain von Trapp in “Sound Of Music” and the tap dancing gangster, Dude, in “Sugar”. Let’s see if that happens!!!Dan Zulevic (Constable) Dan is back for his third musical with WVLO, having appeared first in “Big River” in 2004 and then returning for our 2011 production of “Sound Of Music”. His long list of credits include his arranging and conducting the pioneering rock musical “Lysistrata” at Stanford in 1966, then in 1983 he returned to performing by starting a 25-year run fronting a gigging rock band; and finally returning to the stage to “act” for LTSJ, WCT, APJCC and WVLO. In SBMT’s “Finian’s Rainbow” he was able to show off his harmonica talents as well.

WHO’S WHO ON OUR STAFFElizabeth Dale (Producer) Elizabeth has spent 25 years with WVLO and received special recognition at the Annual Awards Dinner for her dedication as a Board Member and Vice President as well as involvement in the numerous musical productions for which she has served as Producer, SM, ASM, stage & lighting crew, and assistant to many staff positions. Her last production was last season’s “Sugar” and this year, not only will she produce “Fiddler”,

but will serve as Associate Producer for next season’s “Jesus Christ, Superstar”. She gives “credit” for her initial introduction to our group to her husband of 57 years, Les, and daughter, Julie, who has appeared in several of our productions! Every organization should have such a loyal and dedicated volunteer!!

Earl Masuda (Associate Producer) Not only is Earl on the staff of this production, he is also in the cast, playing the part of Yussell. You can tell by the beard he’s been growing for the past 2 months!! This marks his “lucky 13th” musical with WVLO in some capacity or other, as cast, crew, set painter and staff. His favorite stage role was that of the Quartet in “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” in 2010 which earned him and the rest of his quartet an ERMA Award.

He also appeared in “Damn Yankees”, “My Fair Lady”, “White Christmas” and “Sound Of Music”. Earl taught in the OGSD for 37 years and since retiring has filled his idle hours serving as a Board member and a “go-fer” on our musicals. He extends his gratitude to wife, Pat, sons Matt and Chris, and all his Oak Grove family and friends for their continued support of his ‘second’ career.

Rebecca White Brownson (Director) Becky first appeared with WVLO in 1980 in a production of “Good News” and appeared in or worked backstage on many of our productions in the 1980’s. She then took a long hiatus to raise her family before rejoining WVLO in “Hello, Dolly” in 2003. Since then she’s been involved in several productions, both acting and directing. This will be her fifth in this staff position, having directed “Sugar”, “Sound Of

Music”, “Big River” and “Oliver”. She was most recently seen in “Bells Are Ringing” as Sue, the owner of the answering service. Becky’s long list of credits also includes productions with SBMT, SCP, SJCLO and many other organizations. She enjoys the support of her husband, Don, and two wonderful children, Ellie and Tom.

Roberta Howe (Music Director) “Bobbie” returns to conduct her fifth orchestra for WVLO, having previously waved her baton for “Oliver”, “Hello, Dolly!”, “Anything Goes” and “Damn Yankees”. She has been playing in orchestras for our musicals since HS and met her husband, Michael Maida, here in 1989 in our production of “Guys & Dolls” so WVLO is really “home” to her. An elementary school band teacher by day, she also plays

bass clarinet with several local orchestras and community bands. She says that “the music for this show is so beautiful, I wanted to be a part of bringing it ‘To Life!’” She extends her thanks to Ed Hand for his continued encouragement and support, as well as all her wonderful musician friends playing in the orchestra. She wants to dedicate this production to the memory of Nick Stumbaugh, fellow bass clarinet player and “pit buddy”, who left too soon and is greatly missed.

Diane Milo (Vocal Director) Diane is back for her fourth production with WVLO in this staff position after directing “Sound Of Music”, “Wonderful Town” and “Plaid Tidings”. She has performed in four of our musicals as well, “Damn Yankees”, “Smokey Joe’s Café”, “The 1940’s Radio Hour” and “They’re Playing Our Song”. She has over 60 musical theatre credits as director, vocal director or performer with AMTSJ, FMT, SBMT,

City Lights and Tabard Theatre.Valerie Valenzuela (Choreographer) Valerie makes her debut on our staff in addition to being a newlywed!! She performed in three of our musicals, including “West Side Story”, “Sweet Charity” and “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”, where she met Ronnie, her new husband! And their marriage is not the first credited to WVLO; and it won’t be the last because we know of another one that is coming up on New Year’s Eve! So congratulations, Valerie, we

wish you and Ronnie much happiness.Stephen C. Wathen (Production Designer/Scenic Artist) Stephen marks his 70th production for WVLO, his most recent was last season’s closer, “9 To 5”. His amazing and stunning scenery has been a backdrop for many of our most memorable shows, including “Drowsy Chaperone”, “White Christmas”, “Sound Of Music”, “Seven Brides…Brothers” and many others, too numerous to mention. His impressive career spans more than 400

stage productions, 25 movies and a few hundred TV programs, including credit as one of the animators of the Gumby TV series and a special effects designer for George Lucas Films. He was the scenic artist for SBMT’s recent production of “Les Miserables” and in his “spare” time, teaches his theatrical craft to the students at Ohlone College. A published author, Stephen produced his original scripts of “Dracula” and “The Three Musketeers” at Ohlone College to rave reviews.

Michael Glenn Munoz (Lighting Designer) Michael returns to us after taking a brief vacation from this position. When we finished the 2011-2012 season, there were 45 productions with WVLO on Michael’s list, indicating that “Bells Are Ringing” was his most recent musical. He just completed “Les Miserables” for SBMT and his other credits include productions with CCMT, SCPL, TeatroVision, LTSJ and Woodminster Amphitheater. He earned

his BA in Fine Arts from SJSU with a minor in dance.

Michael MacKenzie (Stage Co-Manager/Priest) Mike returns for his 36th production with WVLO and is not only in a staff position, but is a member of the cast as well, playing the Priest! We’ve managed to get him onstage before, but mostly as a ballroom dancer! This time he’s wearing religious garb so don’t know what to expect!! A retired electronics tech, he was awarded the special Jean Hutchins Award in 2008 for his loyal dedication and participation

with our Association. His hobby is photography, but he really enjoys managing the crew and “manipulating” the sets.

Dave Raiman (Stage Co-Manager) Dave has been volunteering for numerous WVLO productions since 1991, serving almost exclusively as SM or member of the stage crew. We did get him in a tuxedo in order to dance at the Ball in “My Fair Lady” so he does a have a “performing” credit, too. Dave was also the recipient of the Jean Hutchins Award, presented to him for the 2009–2010 season. A graduate of the University of Illinois in computer engineering,

he works for IBM and we can hardly wait for his retirement so he can spend more time with us on these musicals.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) John joins our WVLO staff for the first time, but has an impressive list of credits starting with TheatreWorks thirty years ago and continuing with SBMT, City Lights, Tabard Theatre and others. He’s also known as the “stage parent” of Paul and Carolyn in our productions of “Flower Drum Song”, “Honk!” and “Oliver”. John played keyboard in our orchestras for “Honk!”, “Sugar” and “9 To 5” and has performed

keyboards/vocals in rock bands for over 15 years and in theatre orchestras since 2005. He serves as the Chief Audio Engineer at TOSPS and is also a former record producer and founder of Silver Label Recording. At MIT, John studied acoustics with Dr. Bose while earning his BSEE degree. He also holds a M. Eng. in EECS from UC Berkeley and an MBA from Stanford.

Carol Clever (Costumer) Carol marks her fifth production with WVLO as Costumer, having most recently “dressed up” our cast of “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”. She is an international costume designer who has established her craft in Germany, Spain and England and is now well-known in the Bay Area performing arts circles. Recent credits include Foothill College, Woodside Priory School, Los Altos Stage Company, Harker Prep School and a Rob

Nilsson film, “Bridge to a Bay”. Carol is an award-winning costume designer and stylist, who further participates in costume design for industrial print, music videos and Bay Area film productions.

Our apologies and sincere thanks to any staff, crew, or other contributors or volunteers whom we failed to mention due to the early publication deadline of this program.

Did You Know?that the original Broadway production opened on September 22,

1964, and was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Director, Best Choreography, Best Actor and Best Actress?

that the original production ran for a record-setting total of 3,242 performances?

that in 1971 West Valley Light Opera was the first Community Theatre organization to obtain the rights to perform “Fid-dler On The Roof” and that we performed 19 ‘sold out” performances?

that Beatrice Arthur (Maude) performed as Yente, the match-maker?

that even though Joanna Merlin originated the role of Tzeitel, it was later performed by Bette Midler?

that there have been five Broadway revivals of “Fiddler”, in 1976, 1981, 1991, 2004 and 2007?

that the stars that have played Tevye through the years include Topol, Zero Mostel, Herschel Bernardi, Theodore Bikel, Harry Goz, Leonard Nimoy and Harry Fierstein?

that Topol was in the Bay Area last month to kick off the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival?

that the song, “Sunrise, Sunset” is often played at weddings and in 2011 Sheldon Harnick wrote two versions of the song, suitable for same-sex weddings, with minor word changes that would be appropriate for the ceremonies?

that “the Fiddler” is a metaphor for survival, through tradition and joyfulness, in a life of uncertainty and imbalance?
