Interview Q: What do you think the next big changes will be? A: Well, I think one huge change that were really justbeginning to look into is mobile devices. America is thelast country to figure out that mobile devices matter. And,over the past 10 years, if you take a look at whatcounties really adopted mostly mobile phones, butother devices it was pretty much the entire planetexcept the United States. And the [United States] reallydidnt jump on until the iPhone took off and then Androidphones. So, we are just beginning to see some of thereally big transformations and I think that reallypotentially disrupts just about any part of education aswell as civic life. with Steve from AIG Tech. Department 7. Q: Looking 10 years intothe future, how do you seemobile technologies beingused in higher educationclassrooms and courses andhow do you see themchanging the way thatinstitutions go aboutteaching? A: In a classroom, discussion really extends it through spaceand time to cover the entire campus. If we use technologysuch as augmented reality, we can go even further. So, forexample, if were in an art class and working on a project, wecould install that digital project on location in campus so thatour prof or the other students or that so anybody could noticethat object once they reach a certain location of the campus.Meanwhile, if you and I are working and want to find a thirdperson, we could use augmented reality later to discoverwhere that person is so we could meet him or her. Were justbeginning to look into what this means. 8. Q: How do you see the future in terms of personaldata, its collection, use, and who should control andregulate this on behalf of internet users? A: There are some nuanceddifferences between howEuropean and the USgovernment think about certainkinds of data, such asbiometric. In Europe it is moreregulated. But there is a biggerquestion here. The majority ofthe worlds countries aredescribed by Freedom Houseas autocratic. As theirpopulations come online, it isunlikely that the citizens will findmuch protection from theirgovernments. This means wehave to fight hard to helpsafeguard their privacy andsecurity. 9.
