Who was St. Patrick? St. Patrick, the patron saint of

Ireland, is one of Christianity'smost widely known figures. Butfor all his celebrity, his liferemains somewhat of a mystery.

It is known that St. Patrick wasborn in Britain to wealthy parents

near the end of the fourthcentury. He is believed to havedied on March 17, around 460A.D.

At the age of sixteen, Patrick was

taken prisoner by a group of Irishraiders who were attacking hisfamily's estate. They transportedhim to Ireland where he spent sixyears in captivity.

    Who was St. Patrick?

After more than six years as aprisoner, Patrick escaped.According to his writing, a voice-which he believed to be God's-spoke to him in a dream, tellinghim it was time to leave Ireland.Soon after, Patrick beganreligious training, a course ofstudy that lasted more thanfifteen years. After hisordination as a priest, he wassent to Ireland with a dualmission-to minister to Christiansalready living in Ireland and tobegin to convert the Irish.

Familiar with the Irish language andculture, Patrick chose to incorporatetraditional ritual into his lessons ofChristianity instead of attempting toeradicate native Irish beliefs. For

instance, he used bonfires to celebrateEaster since the Irish were used tohonoring their gods with fire. He alsosuperimposed a sun, a powerful Irishsymbol, onto the Christian cross tocreate what is now called a Celtic cross,so that veneration of the symbol wouldseem more natural to the Irish.

    St. Patricks Day Symbols

    Music has always been an

    important part of Irish life.

    Irish music is produced with

    instruments like the fiddle,

    the uilleann pipes, the tin

    whistle, and the bodhran.

    St. Patrick never drove

    snakes from Ireland; the

    story is a metaphor for

    driving paganism from the

    island.

    The traditional meal of

    Irish bacon and cabbage

has been modified in theUnited States. Irish bacon

    has been replaced with

    corned beeffor the

    annual feast.

History of the Holiday St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast

day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The

Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for thousandsof years.

On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season ofLent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in themorning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitionsagainst the consumption of meat were waived and people woulddance, drink, and feaston the traditional meal of Irish bacon

and cabbage. The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place not in Ireland, but

in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the Englishmilitary marched through New York City on March 17, 1762.Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers toreconnect with their Irish roots, as well as fellow Irishmenserving in the English army.

The Leprechaun The original Irish name for these figures of

    folklore is "lobaircin," meaning "small-bodiedfellow.

Belief in leprechauns probably stems fromCeltic belief in fairies, tiny men and womenwho could use their magical powers to servegood or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechaunswere cranky souls, responsible for mendingthe shoes of the other fairies. Though onlyminor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechaunswere known for their trickery, which theyoften used to protect their much-fabledtreasure.

Leprechauns had nothing to do with St.Patrick or the celebration of St. Patrick'sDay, a Catholic holy day. In 1959, WaltDisney released a film called Darby O'Gill &the Little People, which introduced Americato a very different sort of leprechaun thanthe cantankerous little man of Irish folklore. This cheerful, friendly leprechaun is a purelyAmerican invention, but has quickly evolvedinto an easily recognizable symbol of both

St. Patrick's Day and Ireland in general.

    The Shamrock

In fact the first written mention ofthis story did not appear untilnearly a thousand years afterPatrick's death.

The shamrock, which was alsocalled the "seamroy" by the Celts, was a sacred plant in ancient

Ireland because it symbolized therebirth of spring. By theseventeenth century, theshamrock had become a symbol ofemerging Irish nationalism. As theEnglish began to seize Irish landand make laws against the use ofthe Irish language and the practiceof Catholicism, many Irish beganto wear the shamrock as a symbolof their pride in their heritage andtheir displeasure with English rule.
