11:30 – 12:00 AM Lunch, Networking, and Announcements 12:00 – 12:45 PM Capstone presentations, Department of Systems Engineering and
Operations Research, George Mason University~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The senior design courses consist of a two-semester (6 credit hour) Capstone experience for Systems Engineering Majors.
About 190 students have completed this capstone design experience since it’s introduction in 1989. Students typically
work in four to six person teams on the same problem for their entire senior year. The results of the design formulation,
project management and trade-off evaluations are presented to the Systems Engineering and Operations Research (SEOR)
faculty, the project sponsors, in professional and inter-collegiate competitions, and at INCOSE meetings. In 2001 and
2002, teams of seniors taking the SE senior design capstone course with Professor George Donohue, won awards in the
U.S. Military Academy's Systems Engineering Capstone Design Competition, held at West Point. In 2002, another studen
team tied for second place in the systems innovation category of the national NASA student design competition, which
included over 20 entries from engineering programs from some of the best engineering schools.
At this INCOSE meeting, participants will be introduced to the goals and objectives of the GMU Capstone Program and
the process for sponsoring future Capstone projects. You will also be introduced to the students and work that is being
accomplished by the current Capstone project teams:
• Design and Test an Airport Slot Auctioning System. Sponsored by MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation Systems
Development, Dr. Fred Wieland, Team Advisor
• Design an electronic parking slot auctioning system for George Mason University. Sponsored by GMU Parking
Office and GMU Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science Lab
• Analyze and Design an Air Transportation Network of 4 dimensional tubes between the Major Population Centers
of the US. Sponsored by Honeywell, Inc., Dr. Lance Sherry, Team Advisor.
• Design a new US Air Traffic Control Sectorization System based upon Wireless Telecommunication System
Requirements. Sponsored by CNS, Inc., Ms. Lorri DeLorenzo, Team Advisor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
