WHAT IS POVERTY ?Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financialresources and essentials to enjoy a minimum standard of life and well-being that'sconsidered acceptable in society.

TYPES OF POVERTY

WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW

More than one-third of Africa lacks clean water.That’s nearly the population of the United States and Canada combined

Less than 1 percent of the US budget goes to fightingextreme poverty.

1.2 billion people live off $1.25 a day

3 million children die from malnutrition everyyear.

Every year, consumers in rich countries wastealmost as much food (222 million tons) as theentire net food production of sub-SaharanAfrica (230 million tons).

CAUSES OF POVERTY/THE POVERTY CYCLETrade

Developing countries lose out through unfair trade agreements lack of technology andinvestment, and rapidly changing prices for their goods.

Work and Globalisation

Better communications and transport have led to a ‘’globalized’ economy . Companieslook for low-cost countries to invest in. This can mean that, through threre are jobs,there are low paid workers

Debt

Developing countries have to pay interest on theirs debts. This means they cannotafford to spend enough or basic services like health and education;nor on things liketransport or communications that might attract investment

Food and education

Affordable, secure food supplies are vital. Malnutrition causes severe healthproblems, and can also affect education. Without education it is difficult to escapefrom poverty.

ANTI-POVERTY WEEK

Everyone is encouraged to help reduce poverty and hardshipby organizing an activity during the Week or taking part in anactivity organized by others.

The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:- Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequencesof poverty and hardship around the world and in Cyprus

- Encourage research, discussion and action to address theseproblems, including action by individuals, communities, organizationsand governments.

WHAT IS THE ENGLISH SCHOOL DOING FORANTI- POVERTY WEEK?

Wednesday 12th / 13th October: Assemblies – to raise awareness.

Monday 17th October: Non Uniform Day and Bake Sale.

All money raised will be going to children living in poverty inCyprus and in Kenya.

Monday 17th October – 21ST October:Food Collection and other essential Items - Vagoni Agapis

Anti- Poverty Bazaar in Science Building – Buy Sophia Foundation productsand products from Vagoni Agapis. See display of Fairtrade Products.
