    Timioara and its rivers

    The courses of the Timi and Bega rivers, their

    branches and their tributaries formed a tangled

    net in the swamps on the low land of theregion

    The medieval fortress was build on a narrow dry

    strip of land crossing the swamps

    Timioara was always represented surrounded by

    water

    Hidrotechnical works

    Even if the building of a new town on the exact location

    of a medieval settlement was one of the most

    important building efforts of the 18th century Europe,

    the most important undertaking of the time in theregion was related to hidrotechnical works, meaning

    Hidrotechnical works

    1728 1732: regularisation of the Bega river from

    Faget (about 80 km East) to Timioara

    Drying of the swamps for the building of a new city

    and its fortifications

    A canal for navigation, linking the Bega river to the

    Tisa and the Danube, and thus inabling heavy trasport

    to reach Timioara from Central Europe and theNorth Sea

    For the building of the canal only, 3 million working

    hours were necessary

    The economical development of

    Timioara The growth of Timioara is significant, from

    20 000 inhabitants in 1850 to 68 500 in 1910

    The development of the Eastern industrialdistrict (Fabric) is the fastest, at the end of the

    19th century is clearly overtakes the city centre

    (called the Fortress), with 16 000 inhabitants in

    1870 (compared to 6 500 in the Fortress) andwith 23 500 in 1910 (compared to 5 100 in the

    Fortress)

    was triggered by its two main extra muros

    districts:

    The comercial district, with its busy port on the

    West of the Fortress (Josefin)

    The industrial district, with its canals bringingwater to factories on the East of the Fortress

    The 2005 flood

    In April 2005, a 50 m portion of the Timi damm

    broke, and brought a desatrous situation:

    From 14 of April to the 20th of May (37 days)

    30 000 Ha of land were under water

    3 876 houses were damaged, from which 739

    destroyed

    2 800 inhabitants from 116 villoages were

    evacuated

    events

    Bega Boulevard is an event already at its second

    edition, aiming to focus the attention of the

    citizens on the necessity of projects for the

    rehabilitation and reclaim of the river. It

    consists of concerts, exhibitions on ecological

    themes, presentation of local projects, fairs etc.A special moment is the toy ducks contest.
