The Present Tense of
Tener (to have)
(El tiempo presente del verbo tener)
Tener • The verb TENER, which means “to
have” follows the pattern of other -er verbs.
• However, some forms of the verb
are irregular.
See if you can spot the differences………
Why is “Tener” an Irregular verb?
tengo
tienes
tiene
tenemos
tenéis
tienen
The verb tener means to have or to possess. It is an
irregular -er verb that is conjugated as follows:
Notice the irregular
YO form . . .
. . . and the changes that occur in the
stem of the second-person singular
and third persons.
The verb Tener
Irregular verbs are verbs that don’t follow the predictable pattern of keeping the stem and adding the appropriate verb ending.
The verb tener
¡Oye! Necesito comer algo.
¡Yo también! ¿Tienes dinero?
No, no tengo. ¿Tienes sándwiches
en casa?
¡Sí, tengo! Tengo una buena idea.
¿Qué idea es ésa?
¡Vamos a comer a tu
casa!
The verb TENER has various uses in Spanish. 1.Possession
• Juan tiene un perro.
• Tenemos un regalo para Teresa
2. Hunger,Thirst& Age (..and basic human needs such as sleep)
→In English we use the verb "'to be" with these
qualities, such as “I AM” hungry, thirsty, and sleepy.
→In Spanish you possess them and say:
• Tengo hambre (I HAVE hunger)
• Tengo sed (I HAVE thirst)
• Tengo sueno. (I HAVE drowsiness)
• Tengo dos años.
• ¿Cuántos años tienes?
• Mi primo tiene dieciséis años
We own years instead of identifying yourself with them, as we do in English.
• Tengo frío. (I have cold)
3. Relationship
• Tengo un hermano
• Ellos tienen cuatro hijos.
→Remember that TENER is a "Go" verb, meaning
that it has an irregular yo: tengo. Furthermore, it is an e-ie stem change verb
thus the conjugated verb should look like this:
Tengo, Tienes, Tiene, Tenemos, Tenéis, Tienen
