Jesus told a parable about a “good Samaritan” who helped a Jewish man who had been beaten up and left to die…even though Samaritans and Jews were enemies. The story reminds us that Jesus wants us to love everyone, and help anyone who needs it.

The Good Samaritan (Week 1 of 2)

LARGE GROUP

● Clean up when the presenter gives you a 5 minute warning (about 15 minutes into the service).

● It’s clean up time! Let’s all clean up while I count down from 10 to 1. Ready, set….go!

● Slowly countdown from 10 to 1 until kids have cleaned up toys. Then circle up on the floor, or line up at the door.

SAY Today we’ll learn that We can help others. Let’s do these motions and say We can help others!

GET READY | 3 minutes

Give kids very brief scenarios. Tell them to give a thumbs up if you’re being kind, and a thumbs down if you’re not being kind.

● I shared my new game with my sister. (up)

● I ate a plate of cookies, so my friend couldn’t have any. (down)

● I saw a person crying, and I went over to hug him/her. (up)

● I saw a person crying, and I ignored him/her. (down)

● I wouldn’t let my brother play with me. (down)

● I petted my dog, and played with her. (up)

● I helped my mom clean the kitchen. (up)

● I cheered for my friend when he won a game we were playing. (up)

SAY Hey everyone, I’m so glad to see you! Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. She’s going to show us how we can act in Kids’ Club!

SAY This is God’s story. Out of ALL the stories in the world, this is the most important. Do you know what it’s called? (The Bible!) It’s God’s Rescue plan! It shows us how He rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. Show kids the Bible.

SAY In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it, and it was GOOD. Let’s all say, “It was good!” Make a big world with your arms.

SAY God made all the water in the oceans, and rivers, and lakes. Let’s pretend to swim in the water! Pretend to swim.

SAY God made all the dirt and trees and flowers. Let’s pat the ground and feel the dirt in our hands! Now put your arms up and be a tree! Pat the ground or pretend to be a tree.

SAY God made all kinds of animals, like birds! Let’s pretend to flap our wings and fly like a bird! Pretend to fly like a bird.

SAY Then God made two people: Adam and Eve. They got to live in a beautiful garden, and walk and talk with God. And it was GOOD. Hold up two fingers.

SAY But THEN, something very, VERY sad happened. A snake tricked Adam and Eve, and they disobeyed God. Then, all the wrong things came into the world, like sickness, and sadness and death. Show me your sad face. Make a SSSSS sound and slither like a snake.

SAY Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve, and you and me, could be close to God again! Do you know who the Rescuer is? Jesus! Let’s say JESUS!

SAY Once, Jesus told a story about a man who was traveling from Jerusalem to a town called Jericho. Can you guys say “Jericho”? (Let kids say: Jericho.) Suddenly, some mean people came and beat him up! (Lie down on the ground.) They took all his money, and left him lying on the side of the road. He had ouchies everywhere, and he couldn’t move…

SAY While the man was lying there, three people walked by. We’re going to watch a video to see what the people did. As you watch, do all the movements with the woman in the video!

SAY Wow, so the man was lying on the ground, all beat up. Everybody imagine you are lying on the ground with ouchies. Say “ow!” “ow!” (Let kids act.) A really nice-looking man comes walking by. You think he’ll help you! But…nope. He walks right on by! Was that man kind? (Let kids say: no!)

SAY Then a second man comes walking up to you …but he goes around you too! Was that man kind? (Let kids say: No!)

SAY Finally, a man from another town called Samaria came walking by on a donkey. When he gets to you, he says, “Oh my!”

SAY He cleans you up and bandages your sores. Imagine a very kind person is taking good care of you! Was that man kind? (Let kids say: yes!)

SAY Jesus told us that story because he wants US to act like the third person, the guy with the donkey. The one who helped the man!

SAY We can be kind to our families, our friends, even people who are mean to us! God wants us to help others all the time, even when no one is looking. Let’s pray to God now and ask him to help us help others

TELL THE STORY | 10 minutes

LARGE GROUP

SAY Now it’s time to pray to God. When we pray, that means we talk to him, and he actually LISTENS to us, and hears our words! So let’s talk to God right now. Close your eyes, and say these words after me.

PRAY (Break into small, repeatable phrases.) Dear God. We love you. Help us to show love to everyone! We want to help others. Aaaa-men!

SAY Now it’s time to worship Jesus! That means we sing and dance and tell him how much we love him. Everybody stand up and sing as loud as you can!

PRAY + WORSHIP | 5 minutes

Dismiss kids to their rooms in a fun way, like tip-toeing, acting like an animal, pretending to fly, etc.

● What happened to the man who was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho?

● Did the man who worked at a church help him? (No!) Did the second man help him? (No!) Did the man with the donkey help him? (Yes!) How did he help? (He bandaged him and brought him to an inn where he could be safe and get better; have kids give each other a hug.)

● Who does Jesus want US to act like in the story? (The man with the donkey; the Samaritan!)

● Give kids a body template and set out markers or crayons to color it. Then lead kids in the following motions:

○ “Hit” the body template because the man got hurt.

○ Use two fingers to “walk” by the man once.

○ Use two fingers to “walk” by the man a second time.

○ Use two fingers to “walk” up to the man and say, “I want to help!”

● Then give each kid two Band-Aid stickers and let them “bandage” the hurt man!

GET READY LARGE GROUP SMALL GROUPFREE PLAY

Pass out a snack and let kids eat at tables. Personally connect with kids and find out about their day, not just focusing on the story. Ask questions like: What’s your favorite (blank)? Who do you live with?

CREATE AND PLAY

● What are some things we can do to be kind? How can we use our hands to help? (Kids can share ideas, but also, lead them in these motions:)

○ We can pick up our toys (pretend to pick up toys off of the ground)

○ We can share our toys (pass a toy around the room)

○ We can give our friends a hug (ask kids to hug or high five someone sitting next to them)

○ We can smile at people (make big smiles)

● Give kids a coloring page or activity sheet until their parents pick them up.
