Lessons Learned from the 2013

Pilot Test

Page 24: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing

Frustration with lack of word processor type functionality

Issues with “scrolling,” “dragging,” and “dropping” on computers without mouse

Manipulation of media - - pause & rewind - - was challenging for some

Variables between small screen vs. large screen displays

Small screen requires more scrolling to reveal content

Page 25: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing

Adjusting volume on headsets required users to exit the test

Students definitely need more time in writing a long response without teacher guidance

Wish we would get results

Page 26: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

Test proctors lacked necessary technical skills

Inadequate technical support staff to cover multiple locations within one district

Not reasonable to think the classroom teacher can manage the SBAC alone

Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing

Page 27: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

Inadequate space in computer labs

Login process was challenging

Lack of keyboarding skills; students too focused on the keyboarding process to do their very best

Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing

Page 28: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

Not enough devices to test

Additional training need for test proctors

Headsets are required

Capacity Check

Gear-up for the Spring Field Test

All schools to participate

ELA and/or math on one or more of the March dates

Students spend a minimum of 30 minutes in the SBAC practice test environment

Students and staff participate in a feedback/reflection activity

Connectivity and device capacity

Page 33: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

Capacity Check Students and staff will gain familiarity with the

testing environments,

Teachers will analyze the Depth of Knowledge levels of test items and prepare for field test logistical challenges, and

Administration (site and district) will identify gaps in technology, logistical concerns, and staff development needs.

Intended to “stress” the technology capacity of our system

Page 34: Preparing Your Site for the 2014 SBAC Field Test January 16 – 17, 2014

SBAC Practice Tests

Capacity Check should not be the first or the last time students and staff are in the Practice Test environment.

It is strongly encouraged for students to take both sections of the practice tests, for each content area prior to spring field test.
