In 1670, English settlers arrived andfounded Charles Town. I t was the firstEnglish settlement in South Carolina.Rice and indigo were grown on the
plantations. I t be-came an importantport for trade.Charles Town isnow calledCharleston. Englandplaced heavy taxeson its colonies.
Unhappycolonists roseup againstEngland andthus began theRevolutionary War (1775-1783).Thecolonies won the war and theirindependence. South Carolina wasthe eighth state admitted into theUnion.

War (1861-1865)started in SouthCarolina at FortSumter.
During the war,many plantationsand farms weredestroyed. Af terthe war, SouthCarolina went through Reconstruction.Tex tile fac tories grew. In the early1900s, the cotton crop was ruined byboll weevils. Farmers began to growtobacco, fruits and soybeans.

The state government of South Carolina is divided into three branches. Mark Sanford is head of the executivebranch. This branch is in charge of
carrying out thelaws. T he legislativebranch is the GeneralAssembly. It makesthe laws.
The GeneralAssembly has twoparts, the Senateand the House ofRepresentatives.The third branch is the judicial branch.This branch interprets the laws.
South Carolina has 46 counties. Eachhas its own government.

In 1861, SouthCarolina troopsbombarded FortSumter. Today thefort is a nationalmonument.. Eachyear many tourists enjoy visiting it. TheCongaree Swamp National Monumentis another famous landmark. Visitors
can see the park by canoeingor walking on the many trails.Slaves were used to create thebeautifulMiddleton PlaceGardens. It is oneof the oldestgardens in theUnited States.

The Carolinawren (Thryothorusludovicianus) wasnamed the statebird in 1948. The
Carolina wren is famous for its musicalsong. The little bird moves around
quickly looking for insects and berriesto eat. The Carolina wren is easy toidentify. It isbrown with a tanchest and has awhite strip overeach eye.

In 1939, thepalmetto (Sabalpalmetto), or sabalpalm, was namedthe state tree of
South Carolina. It has fan-shaped leaves.This tree played an important part inSouth Carolina's history.
During theRevolutionaryWar (1775-1783), thecolonists builta fort on Sullivans Island usingpalmetto logs. The fort helped thecolonist withstand the British attack.
