Go Math

• The new mathematics standards ask students to carry out more complex tasks, challenge their higher order thinking skills, gain and demonstrate in-depth mastery, and explain their solutions. The standards emphasize mathematical practices, understanding of Florida standards concepts, and fluency with computation skills—with added importance placed on depth of understanding and ability to apply math in novel situations. A major goal of the standards is to avoid teaching math concepts in isolation in order to help students make sense of math and make connections between skills and applications.

• Each lesson in GO Math! begins with an Essential Question that sets the stage for the lesson topic. Real world problems that are instructionally sound and relevant to students are presented within each GO Math! lesson. Strategies and conceptual understanding are highlighted through visual representations, mathematical models, and student explorations.

Kindergarten Standardized Assessments

FLKRS (Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screener) -The purpose for this assessment is to gather information about a child’s overall development and address each student’s readiness for kindergarten based on the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds. This test is given once a year in August.

Kindergarten Standardized Assessments

STAR Early Literacy is the leading computer-based

diagnostic assessment of early literacy skills developed

for Pre-K–3rd grade students. STAR Early Literacy tracks

development in three domains:

Word Facility and Skills, Comprehension Strategies and

Constructing Meaning, and Numbers and Operations

STAR Early Literacy is given 3 times a year as a progress

monitoring tool.

Kindergarten District LevelAssessments

Writing Portfolio - pieces of student writing in the areas of narrative, opinion, and

informational that are scored and recorded using a district provided rubric.

First Grade Standardized Assessments

2. As students advance in reading, they are given the STAR Reading test - this is an assessment of reading comprehension and skills for independent readers through grade 12. STAR Reading tracks development in five domains: Word Knowledge and Skills, Comprehension Strategies and Constructing Meaning, Analyzing Literary Text, Understanding Author’s Craft, and Analyzing Argument and Evaluating Text. The STAR test is used to provide the teacher and student with the student’s independent reading range.

First Grade Standardized Assessments

3. IBTP (Item Bank and Test Platform) –computer based assessments from the district level given at the end of each module in math. Their purpose is to provide information about the mastery of the content in that specific area.

5. Math midterm and final provided by the county which will test material taught only in the previous semester.

4. FAIR (Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading) is a screening, diagnostic and ongoing progress monitoring assessment that measures phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. In grades 3- 12 the assessments are computer-adaptive and delivered on Internet-connected computers. This test is administered 3 times a year to assist teachers with instructional decisions.

Third Grade Standardized AssessmentsFSA (Florida Standards Assessment)

With the Florida standards in place to help Florida students succeed, the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) in English

Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and end-of-course (EOC) subjects (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry) serve Florida

students by measuring education gains and progress. Students are scored by levels 1-5 (with 1 being the lowest and 5 the

highest) as well being given a scale score within those levels. FSA scores help to determine promotion/retention in 3rd grade and

school and district grades. (See handout in folder for more information on the Florida Standards)

1. Language Arts – two 80 minute sessions (students must score a 2 or higher on this test to be promoted to 4th grade)
