WCIC – Current State (before Data Domain)

Environment: 1 DC at San Diego HQ No DR Site Net Backup 5.0 9 TB for full backup – Open Systems 500GB for full backup – Mainframe SQL, Exchange, File Systems EMC DMX 1 Master Server, 2 Media Servers. Windows OS

Process: Full backups took 60+ hours to complete (never completing) Backups not successful Data Sets were unknown Mainframe Data was backing to 500-800MB tapes (500GB of data) Backup to tape daily from the staging array (backup server) Offsite tapes daily

Pain: No reliable backups – all data not being backed up. 60+ hour backup window Reliability in the backup and restore process (unreliable restores) Backup servers required weekly maintenance reboots Constant monitoring of the backup jobs for failures Getting tapes off-site is challenging, costly and slow Tape related off-site process is not efficient, cost-effective, or timely Some backup jobs had to be staged to disk (Media servers) before they could be written to tape

WCIC – Current DR State (Before Data Domain – Stats from Bob )

Environment: Current state of WCIC recovery time We have 43 applications / services rated as CRITICAL Of these, 21 require data from the SAN or Mainframe data that will / could be

supplied via Data Domain solution The remaining are Desktop apps or Internet /  hosted solutions Currently, we anticipate 19 days to recover these core functions, primarily driven

by time to recover data via tape backup All Intel based systems /applications would probably be installed in the first 3

days, but sit idle until the SAN data was recovered SAN data: Depending on what day the disaster occurred and how many tapes to back up –

• We assume 10 days to recover a weekly set , and possibly another 5 to recover several daily sets of tapes

• Allows for a moderate amount of difficulty in the restore process ( from our recent email outage experience )

The Mainframe system would take about 5 hours to recover the operating system from tape

And then another 5 days to recover data from tape. This is just the 43 Critical systems, …about  92 apps all together

WCIC – Current Challenges

60+ hour backup window Reliability in the backup and restore process Backup servers required weekly maintenance reboots Constant monitoring of the backup jobs for failures Tape related off-site process is not efficient, cost-effective,

or timely Some backup jobs had to be staged to disk (Media servers)

before they could be written to tape On going development of disaster recovery plan Require effective Disaster Recovery Replication – other

solutions are costly, complex. Tape back up reliability issues. Tape is generally unreliable –

Gartner Group says that more than 10% of restores from tape fail.

Tape management becoming more labor intensive and costly.

WCIC – Current Status with Data Domain

Open Systems Summary:• 31 days runtime. Systems installed on April 8th. No system failures.• There have been no backup failures due to the Data Domain box.• 87.4TB has been written to the Data Domain, compressed down to 7.1 TB!! • Also, all 80TB is fully replicated on the second Data Domain

Aggregate Compression = 13.2x • We are seeing the trending toward 20x climb faster than expected, this is a very positive sign!

Estimated Compression• 2 weeks = 5x• 4 weeks = 10x• 13 weeks = 15-20x

Replication• Replication has been successfully implemented, and is fully functional.  DD1 is completely mirrored on DD2• Below is a table of your current change rate ( you can replicate 1GB an hour over a 2mb connection

Performance• Still seeing excellent performance. Sustained performance ranged from 100MB/s to 120MB/s.  That’s a GB/hr range of 360 – 430

Mainframe Summary:• 861GB has been written to Data Domain (via the Luminex Gateway), compressed down to 174GB.

• Mainframe compression = 4.9x Replication:

• Replication has been successfully implemented, and is fully functional for both the open file systems and the mainframe data.  DD1 is completely mirrored on DD2

Performance :• During initial test backups, the Data Domain saw sustained throughput at 20 MB/s (70GB/hr), This throughput performance is fully expected and has been

documented by Luminex

Proposed Solution Benefits:

Ability to reduce the amount of complexity surrounding your tape infrastructure.Destination for Nearline/ArchivesDR Platform for your VMware/SAP environment Increased retention capabilitiesSpace Savings, Power and Cooling Savings, Management SavingsFast disk performance for writes/restoreReliability

Reduction in backup/restore failures. Strong check sums performed of all data backed up to DD restorer every time.

DD invulnerability architecture ensure data integrity and systems resiliency that will increase over all reliability to 99% availability.

Replication/Disaster Recover Capacity optimized storage and global compression reduce the amount of data sent over the WAN by more

then 95%.

Industry leading price-performance 5-10 X more cost effective then other disk based solutions IP based replication enables cost effective disk based replication leveraging existing infrastructure. Not

possible with other disk based solutions. Reduced management costs, tape related process, people loading, touching tapes, off-site shipping.

Non disruptive integration Data Domain Restorer integrates with existing back up application. Existing back up process does not change. No training or new skills required.

What does this do to the tape activity?

Current tape consumption (before DD) Daily = 8TB-10TB daily tape created and going offsite Weekly = 50TB-60TB tape created Monthly = 240TB tape created Qtrly = 920TB tape created

Tape consumption moving forward Qtrly = 10TB tape created

Data Domain Benefits Summary:

Back up with Data Domain

Maximized Capacity: global compression technology eliminates data redundancy to optimize storage capacity

Reduced Costs: deduplication shrinks back up and recovery costs and reduces management costs by decreasing the number of cartridges and drives in the environment

Increased reliability: Better than 99% back up success rate, integrity checks and self healing capabilities

Performance: faster back up and restore times. Longer retention time for immediate restores

Disaster Recover: Global compression replication support for multi site data protection allowing data to be easily duplicated for off site and archive support. – Using 95% less bandwidth than traditional replication technologies

Notes from Data Domain users…

Templates? – Store them on the DDR “Nearline”, and they compress like crazy!

DR Test? – P2V your core infrastructure to a DDR, replicate, then successfully complete your DR test in hours…

Don’t need no stinkin’ software! -Use VCB to dump to NFS mount! No backup software needed!

Data Domain Feedback from a few customers

Why did you purchase Data Domain? We were looking to transition away from tape, and you

overcame our fear of the transition.

What problems did we solve? We reduced complexity, raised reliability and

performance, and improved storage efficiency.  Most importantly, we took back control of backups from a third-party.

What is your experience with the Data Domain products?

Excellent.  Reliable system, great performance, restores work(!), exceptional customer support.  What is your experience with Data Domain support?

Exceptional.

What is your experience with the Data Domain sales team?

Exceptional.  No bull, good advice and guidance in the buying process.

How can we help moving forward? Stay healthy, grow your business, keep winning

against tape-based vendors, and sell us more capacity at a good price when we are ready.

Was there anything you were disappointed with in your experience or purchase with Data Domain?

No.

Hi Paul / Randy / AJ,I have been researching different disk backup and data reduction (de-dupe) solutions for the past 3 years and may be able to help you with questions (as I’m sure Randy can too).  In my opinion, the Data Domain is the only “plug ‘n play appliance” in the market place that has the proven track record and works as advertised.  If you want a simple all in one solution that offers security, redundancies, speed, replication options, excellent support, “inline” duplicate data reduction and the ability to see ‘inside’ the box when necessary – Data Domain is the choice.  I know both the local Quantum staff and many other San Diego area service providers and I like them – but I do not let friendships or good service dictate what solution is appropriate for the challenges I face.  At the end of the day, good results are what we get paid for.If you want, give me a call and I can discuss it with you.  Thanks,TobyOffice: 858-530-8867
