1.Public transportation

Metro lines

In Budapest there are 3 metro lines, below you can see the picture of it:

The metro line 1 is one of the oldest metro line in Europe. It makes a connection

between Vörösmarty tér and Mexikói út.

Metro line 2 makes a connection between the West and East side of Budapest(Déli

pályaudvar-Őrs Vezér tere)

Metro line 3 makes the connection between the North and South part of Budapest(Újpest-

Központ-Kőbánya-Kispest)

NOTE: Recently one of the metro

stations name has been changed.

So you won’t find Moszkva tér, its

new name is Széll Kálmán Tér!

http://www.bkv.hu/en/

on this website you can read every important information about the Budapest’s public

transportation(eg. route map, time tables)

Tram

There are several lines in the city center and also in the suburban.

One of the most popular and regular line are the tram 4 and 6 which goes in

the Grand Avenue.

Other public vehicle:bus and trolley-bus

Bus Trolley-bus

Suburban railway:

These train transports from Budapest to the surrounding towns.

Their Hungarian name is:HÉV.

You can use these trains till the border of Budapest with your

season ticket but when you pass the border of Budapest you need

to buy an additional ticket from the controller.

To travel by public transportation you must have a ticket. We would recommend you

that if you stay for a longer time, you should buy a monthly season ticket.

We would recommend to buy student passes, which is half price comparing to adult

passes. But it is really important that student pass is only valid with student card or ISIC card.

Prices for public transportation:

Price in HUF Full-price(without student card) Student ticket

Single ticket for one occasion 320 320

10 ticket together 2800 2800

Monthly pass 9800 3850

Quarter pass 29 400 11 550

Yearly pass 107 000 42 000

2.ISIC card

(also known as International Student Identity Card) provides you a lot of benefits (eg. cheaper

season ticket).

You can apply for it in your country, or you can make it in Hungary as well. Here is a list

where you can make this card: https://www.isic.hu/hu/hol_igenyelheted.html

Documents you need to make an ISIC card:

certificate of school attendance (or a student card),

1 photo (3,5x4,5 cm)

fee, which is 2480 HUF.

Telephone

We can hardly imagine our life without cellphone, so to make your live easier, when

you arrive to Hungary we accompany you to buy a new, Hungarian SIM card.

There are 3 supplier in Hungary (Telenor, T-mobile, Vodafone) but interns always buys

their sim card in Vodafone, so it is the best choice during your internship.

You can check the supplier’s website:

Vodafone: https://www.vodafone.hu/en/phones-plans

Telenor: http://www.telenor.hu/en/tariffs-services/

T-mobile: http://www.t-mobile.hu/english

NOTE: Please don’t forget to bring a cellphone which doesn’t depend on sim card (so you can

use other supplier’s sim card as well)!

HINT: On Kálvin tér (tér means square) you can find a Unicredit Bank as well a Vodafone

shop (really close to each other) so in the first days, you can arrange sim card and bank

account issue in the same time.

3.Money

In our country the legal currency is Hungarian Forint (you may know its abbreviation

as well: HUF), we use it for every cash transactions.

The littlest coin is 5 forint, then 10, 20, 50, 100, and the biggest one is 200 (which is

new thing, since we had this new coin of 200 just for 2 years, before 2009 it was a banknote).

The banknotes come in the amount of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000 and 20000.

Below you can see the picture of the banknotes:

Page 5: Preparation booklet

Preparation booklet of AIESEC Hungary 2011/2012

5

Forint in other currencies:

1 Euro is about 280 HUF

1USD is around 210 HUF.

1GBP is around 335 HUF.

When you arrive to Hungary in the first days we make a new bank account to you (your

Trainee Buddy will accompany you to Unicredit Bank. Before you leave the country pay

attentian to start the bank account closing process in maximum 2 weeks before leaving!

NOTE: After making your new bank account, in 1 or 2 weeks, you will get 2 separate letter ,

one of them contain your bank card, in the other one you can find the pin code. After getting

your card, you have to active it!

And here are some good tips where you can change money (or where not to change):

You should not change your money in Keleti Pályaudvar (Keleti Railway Station) because it

is not worth.

But beside that there are a lots of possibilities where you can change your money, I would

recommend you the bigger shopping centers.

Here is a Hungarian webpage where you can search for a good place where you can change

money. You just have to write the

1, county (which is ‘megye’, eg: Budapest)

2, town (which is ‘település’, eg: Budapest)

3, district (which is ‘kerület’)

After search, there will be a lot of possibilities, where you can go near to your flat.

4.Accommodation and renting flat

One of the most important thing is the accommodation. It is also important because it is

one of the biggest expenditure in every month so you should consider what kind of flat you

chose.

You should consider a lot of factors like its price, type of the flat and how far is from

your work place.

Price:

Price depends on lot of factors like its state and the location.

In this map you can see the discrits of Budapest.

These are the districts which belong to the „center” so the

prices most probably higher ones:I,II,V,VI,VII,XI,XII.

Just some example regarding the prices:

In the city centre the average price of a flat with two rooms is about 75 000 Ft.

In the same place with just one room the price is about 60 000 Ft.

When you decide to rent a flat you must pay a deposit which you get after you move out from

your flat.

The deposit can be the one or two month of rental fee but the general is the two month.

Apart from the utilities you pay the comon cost.It depends on the house you live. The avarage

amount of it is between 10 000-20 000 Ft.

Here you can find some webpages about the flats in Budapest:
