New Green Room!

Over the summer, Ted Piper and his team worked very hard to complete the new addition to the Opera House. Fred and Christina Wilhelm donated furniture and artwork to decorate the space and it is now a beautiful room for musicians to rest and focus before concerts. Yuri Namkung & Evan Kory

On November 18 we began our 2nd season at the Benderly-Kendall Opera House with the wonderful violinist Yuri Namkung and pianist Evan Kory. The concert opened with a serene arrangement of Debussy’s The Girl with the Flaxen Hair for violin and piano. After this charming vignette the duo performed two contrasting Sonatas by Mozart—this was Mozart’s debut at the Benderly-Kendall Opera House, a first of many performances in the future, no doubt. Before playing Mozart, Evan and Yuri encouraged the audience to clap whenever it felt appropriate and brought to the audience’s attention a letter Mozart wrote to his father. In the letter, Mozart described how pleased he was that the audience clapped while the orchestra performed the first movement of a Symphony. For anyone who would like to read this interesting anecdote, it is dated Paris, July 3, 1778. Coincidentally, the letter was written just four months after the publishing date of the violin sonatas Yuri and Evan performed.

The Mozart ended with a haunting Minuet, which set the tone for the following piece on the program, Kreisler’s Liebeslied. The duo shared sheet music on the piano and treated us to a lovely rendition of the melancholy Viennese waltz. This lead to Brahms’ 2nd Sonata in A Major, the largest work on the program. Last season, Yuri and Evan performed the first Brahms Sonata, perhaps this means next year they’ll play the third to complete the trilogy. To close the concert the duo performed transcriptions of Gershwin by Jascha Heifetz, the first was the evocative aria from Porgy and Bess “Summertime” followed by the New York inspired first Prelude, bringing the concert to an energetic conclusion. *After Yuri’s performance at the Opera House, she took a redeye flight Sunday night to New York City to make it back in time for a performance at the United Nations Monday afternoon!

Holiday Art Walk

SCFPA participated in the Thanksgiving Holiday Art Walk this year by offering mini-concerts at the Opera House. On Friday the Vox Kino Quartet, Johanna Landis, Anne Quirin, Rick Waits, and Mark Berg performed Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder Waltez with Christina Wilhelm and Evan Kory at the piano. Saturday afternoon the Santa Cruz Singers performed Paul McCartney’s Ecce Cor Meum and to conclude the weekend of festivities and initiate the holiday season the community gathered on Sunday to sing Handel’s Messiah in a fun kareoke rendition!

@scfpa.operahouse

Thank you to our Sustaining Members for joining the Friends of the Opera House fundraising initiative. Through your generous contributions we are able to offer a wide range of phenomenal concerts throughout the 2018-2019 concert season. On November 3rd, the newly formed Sky Islands Piano Trio gave a pre-season house recital featuring works by Brahms, Schubert, and Dvorak for our Sustaining Members. It was a lovely reminder of the wonderful house concerts that started SCFPA. We are very grateful for your support, if anyone is interested in supporting SCFPA by becoming a Friend of the Opera House please visit our website for more information: scfpapresents.org
