Preliminary Analysis of the Wolverine World Wide House
Street Feasibility Study Update
Richard R. Rediske, Ph.D.
Let’s not forget why we are here.
The House St Disposal Site is the source of significant
groundwater and surface water contamination that has
impacted numerous residential wells and the Rogue River for decades
PFOS
The House Street Disposal Site is highly contaminated with PFAS Compounds.
The plume has expanded significantly beyond the House Street Disposal Site Boundaries.
The plume map shows the effect of 50 Years of
Infiltration and Groundwater Migration
from Wolverine’s disposal site for tannery byproducts containing Scotchgard until 1970.
The Feasibility Study and Consent DecreeThe Feasibility Study shall evaluate the following remedy options to (1) manage solid wastes at the House Street Disposal Site and (2) reduce and control potential migration of PFAS Compounds from soils and sludges into the groundwater from the House Street Disposal Site:A. an approximately 30-acre surface cap without a bottom liner B. an approximately 20-acre surface cap over an area in which materials are
consolidated and placed above a liner with leachate collectionC. other alternatives that may include some combination of a smaller cap
and groundwater interceptor, collection, or treatment systems
Subject to Section XVIII (Dispute Resolution for MDEQ and Defendant), if MDEQ does not approve of the proposed remedy in the Feasibility Study for the House Street Disposal Site, the final remedy shall be an approximately 30-acre surface cap without a bottom liner.
House Street Waste Location and Depth
The greatest amount of waste was disposed of in excavated pit intersecting groundwater (USGS 67)
Waste Depth
Clay Cap
Does the remedy address PFAS contamination?
Would phytoremediation better “manage the wastes” and “reduce and control of migration of PFAS Compounds from soils and
sludges into the groundwater” than a 30 acre cap?
Unanswered Questions
1. What is the difference in the amount of contaminated leachate and groundwater leaving the site between the two methods?
2. What will the plume look like 50 - 100 years from now under both scenarios?
Next Steps
• Wolverine submits House Street FS tomorrow on Feb 19• EGLE will establish a Public Comment schedule and host a public
meeting.• Technical Committee will review the FS and present preliminary
comments and questions at the March 18 CAG meeting.• The CAG will finalize the comments and submit to EGLE prior to the
close of the Public Comment Period. • Individuals and CAG members can express their concerns in writing or
at public meetings to EGLE. • Plainfield Township Hearings?
