The theme for this year’s annual report, Making Every Connection Count, is appropriate: connections have been the key to the success of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society since Sylvia Lawry first founded the organization in 1946 in an effort to help her brother.

It all started with a simple act: an ad placed in the New York Times asking if anyone had found a way to treat the disease called “multiple sclerosis.” Hundreds of people responded, connections were formed and a movement was launched.

The MS community has come a long way since then because of the connections made by volunteers like Sylvia and the thousands that came after her. Locally, the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter has grown to become one of the most successful chapters in the country because of the hard work and determination of very committed individuals.

The undeniable value of key volunteers was acknowledged in a public and permanent way by the chapter board of directors when it, for the very first time, bestowed trustee emeritus status on four long-serving board members. Mike Bogdonoff, Marc Brownstein, Lenore Milhollen and Larry Kane are four remarkable individuals who played key roles in the success of our chapter over the past few decades, enabling it to achieve so much on behalf of the 14,000 local families affected by MS in our area.

These four people used every personal and professional connection at their disposal to help build a foundation for success over the years. This past year, not only did staff and volunteers work together to raise record amounts, but many strides were made through outreach and direct service initiatives. None of this would have been possible if not for the standard of excellence set by our trustees emeritus.

It is in this spirit that I dedicate our 2013 annual report to Mike, Marc, Lenore, Larry and the countless other volunteers who have made an indelible mark on the MS movement.

Sincerely,

Tami L. Caesar President

• We held 36 social and educational programs that attracted more than 1,600 people, including those living with MS, families affected by MS and service providers; the events included family fun days, a series for the newly diagnosed and informative updates on disease modifying therapies

• We provided four scholarships to first-time college students who either live with MS or have a parent living with MS

• The HomeAble program provided major home modifications for 30 clients who needed to make their residences more accessible, totaling $115,000

• Through our counseling program, we served 52 clients who could not afford emotional or psychological support

• Through our care management program we served 69 people with one-on-one in person support tailored to each person’s individual needs

• The chapter awarded $250,000 in community impact grants to MS Centers and other collaborative partners that provide care for people living with MS

The National MS Society continues to propel research forward with a comprehensive strategy aimed at stopping MS, restoring function and ending MS forever. This year the Society invested $48 million in over 350 new and ongoing projects from discovery research to the Society’s drug development efforts through Fast Forward®. There were many research highlights, but none were more important than the first meeting of the International Progressive MS Alliance, the largest effort to date to speed research to stop progressive forms of MS.

At the local level, our chapter devoted 28% of funds raised locally -- more than $2.7 million dollars -- to research projects, one of the highest percentages among chapters across the country. The chapter fulfilled its funding commitment of $1.3 million to the vitamin D clinical trial led by Dr. Ellen Mowry. This clinical trial continues thanks to the generous support of our chapter board and donors.

Other research highlights included:

• The oral therapy Tecfidera was approved for relapsing MS by FDA, and positive results of peginterferon beta-1a in relapsing MS led to an application to FDA for its marketing approval

• The first Phase 2 trial was launched of “anti-LINGO” investigational therapy aimed at stimulating myelin repair in people with MS

• Studies in the U.S. and Italy showed potential of stem cells derived from the skin for growing new myelin and for reducing nervous system damage

• A global consortium identified 48 new MS risk genes, with funding from the National MS Society and others, which better define the biological pathways leading to MS and may ultimately lead to ways to prevent the disease and enhance the design of better treatments

• A study suggested that the MS incidence is higher in African-American women than previously thought, and researchers pinpointed genetic differences between African-Americans and Northern Europeans who have MS

Raising funds and making lasting connections through fundraising events

part

4 Nationally, the MS Society is known for its ability to hold successful and meaningful fundraising events that attract mass audiences, raise awareness and have a significant impact on the fight against MS. In 2013, the chapter raised more money and attracted more participants than ever before. In short, it was a memorable year for everyone in the Greater Delaware Valley MS community who wants to see a world free of MS.

• Bike MS: City to Shore Ride 2013 generated $5.8 million in revenue, celebrating its most successful year to date. The 2013 ride brought the event’s fundraising total to more than $60 million in its 34-year history

• MuckFest MS, raised over $635,000. Held in Newtown Square, this boot-camp style obstacle course drew over 6,000 runners, most of them new to the MS Society and the event forged several important new community and volunteer partnerships

• Another relatively new event, Zumbathon® for MS, raised $55,000 in only its third year

• Walk MS generated nearly $2 million in revenue and attracted 13,000 walkers and volunteers making it the largest and more accessible event

• 2013 was a year of transition for Challenge Walk MS. After 10 years of building connections through this two-day, 30 mile walk, the final local Challenge Walk MS event was held in October of 2012, raising $240,000; our chapter is now working with the Maryland Chapter on its Chesapeake Challenge event

• RUN MS, a do-it-yourself athletic fundraising program that allows people to raise money at an athletic event of their choice, generated over $20,000

• The MS Leaders Circle recruited 50 Philadelphia area leadership volunteers to raise $150,000 and launch two annual community service projects to help families with MS

• The Women Against MS (WAMS) Luncheon honored Molly D. Shepard, the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Leader's Edge/Leaders By Design . The event generated more than $200,000 in revenue

Advocacy: connecting our voices to make an impact

part

5The past year was an extremely active one for MS advocacy at the state and federal levels. Our government relations committee was hard at work lobbying for the rights of people living with MS with elected officials at every level. Some highlights include:

• NJ MS Task Force, created by Governor Christie, is currently working on recommendations, including potential legislation, designed to increase access to care for people living with MS

• MS Caucus launched in Pennsylvania; General Assembly Representative Marguerite Quinn is Chair and it includes 27 members

• 12 activism volunteer speakers trained from PA and Southern NJ

• Launch of the Pennsylvania Coalition of MS Nurses

In 2013, the chapter continued to integrate volunteers at every level of our organization. Volunteers support the chapter through roles that range from packing supplies at the warehouse to serving our special committee or our board of directors. They truly are the heart and soul of our organization.

Volunteers: engaging our community in meaningful ways

6

• More than 2,900 volunteers assisted in our fundraising events and 350 volunteered on committees, as self-help group leaders, as activists, at our office, warehouse and on special projects

• The PA Government Relations Committee members helped identify and build key relationships with legislators

• Members of the MS Leaders Circle along with over 100 family and friends volunteered as part of MS Service Day, helping 20 local South Jersey families living with MS with a variety of household and yard tasks

• The chapter’s intern program continued to grow in 2013 with 44 undergraduate and graduate-level college students working alongside our staff in every department, gaining valuable work experience and supporting chapter initiatives

• Youth groups such as the National Honor Society, Key Club, Jr. ROTC, fraternities, sororities and other service clubs helped set up and clean up at events, assembled mailings and rider numbers for Bike MS and brought youthful energy and enthusiasm to their assignments
