Another way to add integers is to use absolute value. The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0. The absolute value of –4, written as |–4|, is 4; and the absolute value of 5 is 5.

If the signs are the same. . . If the signs are different. . .

find the sum of the absolute values. Use the same sign as the integers.

find the difference of the absolute values. Use the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value.
