The True Source of Wisdom

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.

Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Getting a good education is one of my core values. Just ask my kids, and they will

tell you that their mother is a drill sergeant when it comes to academic excellence. I

have always believed that education is an invaluable key that unlocks many doors of

opportunity in this life.

But sometimes, I need to be reminded that with opportunity comes danger. The

temptation to rely on our own intelligence, instead of God, lurks in the shadows.

God warns in Isaiah 47:10-11, “Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when

you say to yourself, 'I am, and there is none besides me.' Disaster will come upon

you, and you will not know how to conjure it away.” People can become “too smart

for their own good.” When God is left out of the picture, any knowledge gained is

worthless and in vain.

In 1 Corinthians 1:25, Paul proclaims, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than

man’s wisdom.” What we know and understand from the world’s perspective doesn’t

really matter in the presence of the mighty, omniscient God. For ultimately, in the

words of Solomon, the wisest man who has ever lived, “There is no wisdom, no

insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord” (Proverbs 21:30).

So as we encourage our children and grandchildren to do their best in school, may

we be reminded that God is the true source of all wisdom and knowledge and decide

now to place our trust in His understanding rather than our own.
