Prayer: A Christian’s Calling “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession,
that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
-1 PETER 2:9 (NIV)
W HAT AN INCREDIBLE CALLING we have been
given. As children of our heavenly Father we
have been given a unique position and a unique
function. Jesus came into this world to “seek and save the
lost” (Luke 19:10) and, as High Priest, to intercede on be-
half of those who turn to Him in repentance and faith, be-
cause “He always lives to intercede for them: (Hebrews
7:25). We too, as a kingdom of priests are to be about the
work of intercession. This is why the apostle Paul says this
is our chief or first duty:
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, inter-
cession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may
live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holi-
ness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a
knowledge of the truth.
~1 Timothy 2:1-4
As never before in my lifetime, our families, our churches,
our community, our nation and our world are in need of
this “kingdom of priests” to be about the calling to which
we have been appointed.
It is for this reason we are calling the church, our fellow-
ship and all from the larger fellowship
of Christ in our community, to make
Thursday a day of intercessory prayer
and to gather at 6:00 in our worship
center for an evening of prayer. Our
time of prayer will be focused on those
spheres of need listed above. This
time of prayer will be led by HCC
staff and other community minis-
ters of the Gospel who are burdened
over the disarray, chaos and heart-
ache that is currently confronting us.
In preparation for our time together I encourage you to set
apart a portion or the entirety of Thursday as a day of both
prayer and fasting. We are pleading for the Lord’s mercy
and grace to be experienced through breakthroughs of bro-
kenness and repentance in the hearts of people all around
the world, that the Church would truly be a “city on a hill
that cannot be hidden.”
But in order for this to be a reality among us, it absolutely
must start on a personal level. Any change you and I
would pray for must be something we are willing to see God
address in our own lives first. As the song says, “Let there
be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.” Of course, this
song was not necessarily written from a Christian perspec-
tive, so there is one crucial piece missing from that song.
The pathway to peace has already been cleared and fully
established by the work of Jesus Christ.
For He Himself [Jesus] is our peace, who has made
the two groups [Jews & Gentiles] one and has de-
stroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in His flesh the law with its com-
mands and regulations. His purpose was to create
in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus
making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both
of them to God through the cross, by which He put
to death their hostility.
So, with that in mind, let us get to the business of our
calling and serve our families, our churches and our world
faithfully by interceding on their behalf, pleading God’s
mercy and grace and connecting hearts of people to the
heart of the One who died for them.
Father of Light, and God of mercy and grace,
We thank you for adopting us as Your children,
Granting us new birth in Christ and calling us
to the task of intercession and making peace.
We ask Your forgiveness in our spiritual sloth and
ambivalence for the lost and hurting of the
world, and
We ask for your grace and favor as
we embrace once again the task
and privilege to which we have
been called.
May Your light shine on us, in us
and
through us, for the salvation of
souls and the healing of hearts
and nations.
“Make us one, Father God, make us one,
That the world may know you gave Your only
Son.
Send us in the world to be
a reflection of Your love and unity.
And we’ll tell the world the truth of how You feel,
That the world may know that Jesus’ love is
real.”
~Phil Johnson
