The key person in Sport & Development is the sports leader who is working on grassroots level in his or her community. This training program develops basic sports leadership skills, using the method of learning by doing.

The main skills for a sports leader are:

• The sports leader as a trainer • The sports leader as a player • The sports leader as a referee • The sports leader as a coach • The sports leader as a role model • The sports leader as an organizer

1. The sports leader as a trainer The main skills to be developed are: presentation, organization and instruction. 2. The sports leader as a player It is important for a sports leader that he or she masters the basic skills of the sport that he or she is going to train. 3. The sports leader as a referee A sports leader must know the rules of the game and must be able to operate as a referee. 4. The sports leader as a coach Before, during and after a game a sports leader should be able to lead the team and give personal and team advices, to obtain better results. 5. The sports leader as a role model To be a role model means that a sports leader has to develop skills to motivate, to encourage participants and teams and to be an example in many ways. 6. The sports leader as an organizer The ability of a sports leader to organize sessions and tournaments is a very important skill.

Learning how to train - Why sport? - Sport has a unique power to attract, mobilize and inspire. By its very nature, sport is about participation. It is about inclusion and citizenship. It stands for human values such as respect for the opponent, acceptance of binding rules, teamwork and fairness, all of which are principles which are also important in daily life. In grassroots projects, sport can be used in a wide range of situations, whether as a tool for individual development or an integrated tool in humanitarian development. Sport plays a significant role as a promoter of social integration, to strengthen social ties and networks and to promote ideals of peace, fraternity, solidarity, non-violence, tolerance and justice. The basic requirements of a training are: Duration: One week, 6 – 8 days Participants: ± 14 – 18 participants, boys and girls, with or without school education, speaking English, French or only their native language but with a potential for leadership and a passion for sports Sports: Any sport, but football is most favorite to use as a tool Venue: Outdoor (soccer) field Equipment: 10 balls, bibs, cones, whistles and a flip-over Extra: Teams to participate in the training sessions and in the tournament Budget: Accommodation, transport, equipment, food and drinks…

A sports project as an instrument for social change, life skills development, integration, reconciliation or peace building

Only with basic sports leadership skills, it is possible to start the

training of how to use sports as an instrument for sustainable peace building, reconciliation, integration and other life skills.

Follow-up The concept of the basic sports leadership skills training is a pragmatically development model and consists preferable of 3 phases: Phase 1: The basic capacity building training of eight days. Phase 2: Observation of activities of the individual sports leader in his or her community and discuss with them arising challenges. Phase 3: Planning of follow-up training. Learning how to be a role model

This training program is based on 20 years of experience as a lecturer at a vocational college for sports leaders (CIOS Haarlem, the Netherlands). The program has been tested and improved while working in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Burundi and Uganda with local sports leaders.
