  • 4 Arranging accommodation

As Uppsala is a popular student city, there is a shortage of housing. Unlike in other countries, Uppsala University does not own any student accommodation. Instead, student housing is provided by a number of private companies, and students are responsible for arranging it themselves. Securing accommodation in Uppsala can be a competitive and time consuming process, so be prepared to put some energy into it.

To find accommodation, students are usually required to put their name in housing queues. In most cases, students will earn points based on the amount of time they have been registered. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you register your name in accommodation queues right away. A good option for new students is to rent a second-hand room or apartment. It is common for families in Uppsala to rent out a room in their house or apartment to students.

Please keep in mind that the most important thing is that you have somewhere to live when you arrive. The standard of accommo-dation in Sweden is very high, and as

Uppsala is a small city you should be able to ride your bike everywhere, regardless of where you are living. If you are offered accommodation, say yes! Once you have secured housing you can continue your search for a more ideal place to live.

To get started, visit the following websites:

www.studentboet.se The best place to start your search is Studentboet. Here, you can find a list of all of the housing companies in Uppsala, as well as a large collection of second-hand contracts ranging in type, price and availability.

www.studentstaden.seStudentstaden is the largest provider of student housing in Uppsala. To be eligible for accommodation, you must register in their queue. When housing becomes available it will go to the student with the largest amount of queue days.

www.heimstaden.comHeimstaden is a private housing company that does not have a waiting list or queue system, making it very useful for international students. It is important that you visit their website regularly, as new rooms become available often and go to the first students who apply.

www.v-dalabostad.seV-Dala Nation offers relatively new student accommodation. You can register on the website to start looking for housing.

www.blocket.se To find second-hand accommodation, visit Blocket. Here, you are also able to create a profile for yourself and state the kind of housing you are looking for. As Blocket is entirely in Swedish, you will need to click on Uppsala and then the category Bostad to come to the accommodation section.

  • 5More informationFor more information about housing at Uppsala University, please visit:www.uu.se/housing.

Neighbouring townsThe public transportation network in Sweden is extensive and reliable. This makes it possible to study in Uppsala while living in a neighbouring town, such as Tierp, Knivsta, Storvreta, Vattholm, Skyttorp, Tobo, Enkping, Heby, Sala and rbyhus.

Temporary housing solutionsIf you have not managed to organise housing by the time you leave for Sweden, you can find a list of youth hostels and bed and breakfasts on Studentboets website: www.studentboet.se

Watch out for scamsOver the years there have been several cases where students have been scammed when attempting to secure second-hand housing that they found on the internet.

However, while you should always be careful, do not be deterred from finding accommodation this way. If you feel unsure about an advertisement that you have found, dont hesitate to contact us for a second-opinion. You can send an email to [email protected].

  • 6Your financesInternational students must be able to support themselves financially for the duration of their studies. The Swedish Migration Board requires students to have at least SEK 7 300 per month. If you intend to study for a year or more, you must be able to support yourself for at least 10 months of the year. Students who are citizens of EU/EEA countries do not have to prove that they have SEK 7 300 per month at their disposal. They do however have to sign a document stating that they can support themselves while living and studying in Sweden.

Living in Sweden can be costly, and SEK 7 300 per month is the absolute minimum amount of money that you will require. It is important to remember that the cost of living will vary from person to person, depending on their lifestyle. Aside from rent and food, students will have expenses such as text books, transportation and socialising. If you come from a part of the world with a warmer climate, it is strongly recommended that you purchase winter clothing and shoes while you are in Sweden. Students may also wish to make the most of their location by travelling to other parts of Sweden and Europe during the university holidays.

Work opportunitiesPlease do not depend on working to support yourself during your time as a student in Sweden. Due to the large number of students in Uppsala, it is very difficult to find available part-time jobs. Many employers require Swedish language skills, and depending on your university workload, it may be difficult for you to commit to work outside of studies. Some international students find employment at the pubs, clubs and restaurants at the student nations. However, while working at the nations is enjoyable and a great way to make new friends, the amount of money you earn will not be enough for you to live on.

Study and career supportAs a student at Uppsala University, we encourage you to take advantage of the support services available to you. The university has extensive contact with the public sector, private companies, and various organisations. Each year, events are arranged by the university that give students the opportunity to come into contact with future employers. By attending these events, you can gain practical experience at marketing yourself and make important connections for your future career.

The universitys study and career counsellors can offer practical career advice, provide feedback on your cv and cover letter, and help you to prepare for a job interview. They also organise a series of seminars open to all students that relate to finding the right job after graduation. Although many of the seminars are delivered in Swedish, some are given in English. Students can subscribe to a newsletter to stay informed about upcoming career events, work experience and internship opportunities.

  • 7Health care and insuranceMedical insurance for EU/EEA and Nordic citizensBy registering with the social insurance office in your home country and obtaining a European Health Insurance card before your arrival, you will have access to public medical services in Sweden. You will need to present this card when seeking medical or dental care.

Students that do not register with the social insurance office in their home country are responsible for arranging their own insurance. We recommend that you do this before arriving in Sweden. Medical and dental care can be very expensive without any form of coverage.

The Nordic countries have a special agreement, allowing Nordic students to seek medical and dental care in Sweden by providing a valid form of photo ID and an address in their home country.

Property insuranceEven if you are living in student accommodation, it is recommended that you purchase property insurance. The housing providers do not cover theft, loss or damage of your personal belongings. While Sweden is a very safe place, theft does unfortunately occur, especially with items such as bicycles.

Accident coverageAll students at Uppsala University are covered by accident insurance while on the university premises and on their way to and from school.
