    1914 Introduction Safety of life at sea (SOLAS)-major event

    the loss of Titanic

    1929 Due to the First world War SOLAS 1914 was not

    enforced. Maritime community waited until 1933

    1948 New chapter in SOLAS specially on Carriage of Grain

    and DG

    1956 Committee of experts on DG recommended orange book

    1959 First IMO assembly- provisions on carriage of DG in

    packaged form.

    What is the IMDG Code?

    The Code is supported by a variety of international

    conventions and codes such as:

    Recommendation on the Safe Transport of Dangerous Cargoes and

    Related Activities in Port Areas

    A Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes

    The international Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships

    carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk

    The International Code for the Construction and Equipment of ships

    carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk

    International Recommendations concerning the Carriage of DG by Rail

    (RID), Road (ADR) and by Inland waterway (AND and ADNR)

    Regularly updated (every two years) by IMO Subcommittee on

    dangerous goods, solid cargoes and containers.5

    To provide uniformity in world wide regulations

    concerning transport of dangerous goods by sea

    To provide advice to users in an emergency event.

    Amendment 35-10 is the latest version of the

    IMDG Code.

    Compulsory Jan 2012 IMDG Code is amended

    every two year so as to be aligned with theORANGE BOOKamendment.

    off the coast of Sri Lanka in which two seafarers died, the shipwas declared a constructive total loss and sold for scrap. The fire

    started by the explosion burned for more than a week, fed by
