IntroductionWho is Dabbawala?A Dabbawala is a person who supplies the homemade food to the person carrying in the lunch boxes.Also known as tiffinwala, tiffin supplier or annadata.

About DabbawalasFirstly started in Mumbai in year 1890 by Mahadev Havaji Bache with 20 dabbawala later extended to 100.Provides employment opportunities for semi-illiterates.5000 recruits, 175000 clients.Failure one in two months, 1 in 16 million transactions (Even Better than 6 Sigma).60 kms of public transport.Daily they deliver 2,00,000 dabbas that means 4,00,000 transactions per day.Time Taken 3 to 4 hrs per cycle.Each dabbawala is a stakeholder.

DISCIPLINE :

No Alcohol Drinking during business hours.Wearing White Cap during business hours.Carry Identity Cards. Focus on efficient delivery of dabbas.

Method of Working

8:25- Dabbawalas reaches clients home 8:27- Dabbas are placed on carts8:30- Dabbawalas collect lunch box and leave for collection/aggregation points9:20- Reaches origin station9:30- sorting according to destination begins9:41- train arrives 10:21- train arrives at hub station 11:05- tiffins are loaded into respective trains for the final destinations 11:45- train reaches the final destination station12:10- tiffins re-sorted according to their final destination 12:30- tiffin delivered at the doorstep of the clients office2:00- the reverse process starts 6:00- empty tiffins are returned

In the anxiety to ensure on-time delivery, many Dabbawalas end up breaking traffic rules, also traffic police personnel dont stop them as they know the importance of their time.

Honest to their commitment, Dabbawalas dont stop their services even in extreme weather conditions.

Indirect threats by fast food chains and hotels.Food courts at malls/mega structure.Flexi timing/work from home culture.Catering services offering Tiffin services.Paper food vouchers and smart cards.
