JULY 2013

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Saturday, 20 July 20139:00 a.m.

The Pikes Peak Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America is planning our July Fun Run to the Gold Rush Days, a 3-day celebration in Victor, CO. This will be a self-guided day with lots to see and do. Vendors will be setting up on 3rd Street. Other activities include:

Gold panning & museum tour - 10:00-4:00. Victor Lowell Thomas Museum, 298 Vic-tor Ave. The Mu-seum is an original 1899 building that houses two floors of artifacts, books, exhibits and photographs depicting the life in Victor from its beginnings to the heyday of gold mining.

Historic homes tour - 10:30-3:00. Tour interiors of 1890’s homes. $5 tickets (incl. route map) available at Nana’s Attic, Mari-gold Mercantile, Victor Hotel.

Beer Garden - 11:00-8:00. Victor Elks Lodge, 3rd & Diamond Ave.

Gold King vintage baseball game - 2:30. Gold Bowl

For those who want to join us for break-fast before the Fun Run, we will be at the Black Bear Diner just south of Galley Road on the east side of Academy Blvd. The address is: 975 N Academy Blvd. We will meet there at 9:00, enjoy a nice breakfast and mount up for the trip to Victor. For those skipping breakfast, meet us in the

parking lot just east of the diner at 10:30.

The trip to Victor will take a little over one hour, depending on traffic. We will begin our day with a rendezvous at the Pikes Peak Heritage Center, just outside Cripple Creek, where you can learn about gold mining and how it shaped the history of Colorado.

Gold Rush Days started in 1895 as the “World Celebration” in commemoration of the town’s incor-poration as a city July 16, 1894, and honored Victor C. Adams, one of Victor’s original settlers, and the town’s namesake

Because mining moved into the area and changed the face of the town, the celebra-tion was next billed as the “Annual Miners Reunion” and consisted of a carnival and street parade.

Gold Rush Days has continued uninter-rupted since it claimed that name after WWII. The size of the festival has fluctuat-ed from year-to-year. Some years, rain has been a factor in keeping the crowd small. Nonetheless, Victor residents celebrate their heritage as the largest gold mining district in the U.S. still producing gold.

We will wrap up our day with a bite to eat at 2:00 at the Fortune Club restaurant, 300 Victor Ave, before heading home via a scenic drive through the mountains. Remember that this is Colorado; we will be at about 9300 feet so you may need a sweater or jacket. Hope to see you there.

For the first time in nearly three de-cades, Mercedes-Benz is offering a four-cylinder diesel engine in the U.S. The GLK250 BlueTec compact cross-over went on sale April 30, 2013. The GLK250’s all-aluminum 2.1-liter twin-turbo diesel also will replace a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel in the newly restyled E-class sedan in September and will be used in the redesigned C-class sedan in 2015. Mercedes last offered a four-cylinder die-sel here in 1985, in the 2.2-liter 190D.

The GLK250 BlueTec engine gets 20 to 30 percent better fuel economy than a gasoline-powered GLK, according to Bart Herring, head of product manage-

ment for Mercedes-Benz USA. Mercedes says the crossover gets 24 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, compared with 19 mpg city and 24 highway for the GLK350 AWD with a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline en-gine. The GLK250’s diesel, which is teamed with a seven-speed automatic, produces 200 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Mercedes News

I can’t believe our commu-nity is going through this again. Less than a year after the devastating Waldo Can-yon Fire, an even more destructive fire sweeps though the

heart of the Black Forest. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who suffered loss. Some are saying that these fires are the new normal. I pray it is not so. Please donate, help, or do what you can to assist those victimized by the fire.

Fire is a wake-up call for us all and that makes it all the more important to thank Clark and Karen Absher, our hosts for

the Joint Section Picnic. For a time, they weren’t sure if they would have to evacu-ate or not. Fortunately, the fire didn’t reach their area and our picnic was able to go on as scheduled. We had a fabu-lous time with our cohorts from the Mile High Section.

So, it’s time to gear up for the summer driving season. We hope you will join us as we explore our Colorado heritage this month. We’ll be taking the scenic route to Victor, CO to attend Gold Rush Days - an historic small-town Colorado celebration. We’ll tour museums, historic houses, attend a vintage baseball game, or just patronize the many vendors who will be in attendance.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

President’s Rally17 August 2013

9:00 a.m.Join the Pikes Peak Section for breakfast at the Golden Corral at 5410 E. Woodmen Rd at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 17 August. After a leisurely breakfast, we will com-mence with the annual President’s Rally. Those who don’t want to have breakfast, please join us in the Golden Corral parking lot at 10:30.

Since this year is 2013, an odd year, the name and theme of this rally is “Everything Odd.” Think odd-numbered highways and roads, i.e., I-25/Highway 85, Highway 83 (Academy Blvd), Highway 21 (Powers Blvd), etc. or odd lettered street names. Every town has a First and Third St, right? Also, look for anything definably odd, bizarre, or unusual along the rally route. Does this mean we’re going through Mani-tou Springs?

You don’t have to be odd to participate; just bring your three-pointed star car, a partner, a pencil, a clipboard, and a map or GPS. Just answer the questions along the rally route, which ends, oddly enough, at an appropriate restaurant where we will enjoy lunch. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. Cost is $10 per car.

Please RSVP to Andrew Nelson at 719-634-7522 or [email protected]

Drive-In Movie - Sunday, 1 September 2013Here we go again! It’s time for our an-nual moviepalooza - yes, it’s the Pikes Peak Section Drive-In Movie.

Where will we trav-el? Could we be go-ing to outer space? Maybe to Australia, or to Europe, or maybe just around the corner? You never know until you arrive at the meeting place. As always, the title of the movie will be a surprise, but we’ll try to give you a few hints along the way.

Mark your calendars for Labor Day Week-end! Sunday, Sep 1st. Meet at 4:00 p.m. (meeting place yet to be determined).

Dinner at 6:30, Movie at Dusk!

Come and enjoy the fun! It’s all about tops down and sunroofs open with radios tuned up. I have a feeling this is going to be a very good year! RSVP’s are now open! Call or email Dan kerbs at [email protected],

or 719-964-5956.

It’s still in the planning stages, but we’ve recently run across a great German res-taurant, Westfalen Hof, in Golden, CO. We decided it would make a perfect lunch destination for a Sunday fun run. Set in the picturesque Coal Creek Canyon, this drive will be perfect to celebrate Oktober-fest in style. It will be particularly scenic if the leaves have started to turn.

We’ll gather in the Safeway parking lot at 3275 W. Colorado Ave at 9:00 a.m. From there we’ll work our way up Highway 24 to Highway 285 and parts north. It will be a beautiful drive.

From plate-sized weiner-schnitzel to other traditional favorites like sauerbraten, stro-ganoff, rindsroulade, Hungarian goulash, and kohlrouladen, Westfalen Hof has all your German favorites.

Check out their menu at: http://menus-first.com/westfalenhof/wp-content/up-loads/2010/08/westfalenhofmenu.pdf. Not only does it contain the extensive list of dishes, but it also provides some history of the most famous dishes. Did you know Queen Marie, wife of Luwig XV, created the Koeniginpastetchen, or that Westfa-elischer sauerbraten is a sweet-and-sour dish, prepared after a traditional recipe from Westphalia, where the gravy is made with pumpernickel bread and raisins? Come along with us so you can try these menu choices for yourself.

Off-Road Weekend - 27-29 September 2013We’re hoping for some good weather at the end of September as we head out into the mountains for our annual Off-Road Weekend. Given the weird summer sea-son we’ve had so far, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for some glorious golden aspen color.

Tom Croak and Judy Bennett are hard at work looking at trails to challenge but not intimidate our intrepid off-roaders. We’re going to dust off our off-roading skills in the coming weeks with some Sunday drives into the local mountains. Remem-ber, our motto is we don’t bend any metal.

The occasional flat tire doesn’t count!

Brewery Tour - 19 October 2013It’s almost Oktoberfest, and what better way to celebrate than to do a brewery tour in October? Our own brewmeister, Gary Gagnon, will set up a tour of 4-5 brew pubs and breweries for our beer aficio-nados. He’s working on the details as we speak, but you can be sure that he will take very good care of us. Look for all the information in next month’s newsletter.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

I’ve noticed some cars have a large trunk seal. When loading boxes, groceries, suit cases or other large items people tend to rest an item on the trunk seal; or slide the

item across the trunk seal. By doing so you stand the chance of scratching the paint work (above the rear bumper) or the plastic trim. I’ve seen this on other cars.

A cheap way to avoid damage to your car is to purchase a furniture blanket (less than $10 at Harbor Freight). Normally I leave the folded blanket in the car so when needed all I do is unfold the blanket and let it cover the trunk seal area.

As you can see, setting a box or suitcase on the trunk seal will not harm the trim or paintwork. The blanket protects the area.

My GL has a little different problem when it comes to loading large items (ice chest, suitcases, bags of groceries, etc.). Mer-cedes Parts Department sells a folded panel that unfolds to cover the rear door seal and trim.

The panel also protects the paint and trim from the paws of your pet. As you can

see, a dog can climb into the back without scratching the rear bumper. The Mercedes panel uses Velcro to attach to the cargo mat. If you do not use the cargo mat, the panel attaches to the floor hooks.

Mercedes also sells a rear cargo mat for the GL. There is a problem with the mat. If you want to use the third row seating, you will have to remove the mat before you raise the seats. The mat is stiff; it will not fold. A better way would be to put a flex

joint at the point where the seat rises. I have been considering cutting the mat (left to right) at the seat junction, then using duct tape as a hinge (and a way to hold the mat together). I haven’t done it yet; I’m finding it difficult to want to cut a $120 cargo mat.

A cheaper way to protect the rear cargo area is to purchase a furniture mat. You can fold the mat so it protects the cargo area, then when needed, just unfold and lay it over the trunk seal.

Until next month.

Mexican Production? by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

The Mercedes-Benz is the latest luxury automaker reported to be eyeing produc-tion in Mexico, a move that would help it lower production costs , hedge against cur-rency fluctuations and improve logistics.

So far Audi is the only luxury au-tomaker to have confirmed plans to build new production facilities in Mexico. The automaker recently announced it will be constructing a plant in the country that will be online by 2016.

BMW and Infiniti, meanwhile, have recently been reported to be considering production of some of their respective models in Mexico, and now Mercedes-Benz is reported to be con-sidering the same.

The information was first reported by Mexican daily El Financiero, citing Pedro Tabera, the chief of Mercedes’ Mexican operations.

He said various alternatives are being con-sidered, including production with alliance partner Nissan, which already has a plant in Mexico.

An anonymous official at Daimler, Mer-cedes’ parent company, has also revealed to Reuters that there was a good chance Mercedes might enter a joint production agreement with Nissan in Mexico.

Nissan’s upmarket Infiniti brand will soon launch a new compact car utilizing the platform found in the Mercedes CLA Class and other compacts from the German automaker. But while the new Infiniti com-pact has been confirmed for production in the U.K., it’s possible versions for the Americas could end up being produced in Mexico. This could also pave the way for Mercedes to start production of its com-pacts in Mexico as well.

Another New DeliveryIt was another festive occasion at Mer-cedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. Sixteen members of the Pikes Peak Section gath-ered on Wednes-day, 26 June, to welcome the newest (and largest) mem-ber of our Mer-cedes-Benz family. Barbara and Steve Dierks took pos-session of a beauti-ful 2008 GL. It’s a wicked black color with all the bells and whistles anyone could ask for.

As former new owner honorees lifted their champagne glasses for a toast to the new car, the main question on everyone’s mind

was, “When will they be taking it off-road?” Yes, the GL comes with the full off-road package from skid plates to airlift suspen-

sion. So Steve has plenty of time to break in his new baby before our an-nual off-road week-end in September.

The only fly (sorry Barbara) in the ointment was the demise of Steve’s beloved Smart car.

That little cutie went in as trade for the GL - talk about going from

the ridiculous to the sublime! But all’s well that ends well and the Dierks are now the proud owners of an all-Mercedes garage.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

With the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S Class now out in the open, attention turns to the coupe version of the car, which in previous generations was known as the CL Class. The next generation of the big luxury coupe, which has been spied in prototype form for over a year, is widely expected to be called an S Class Coupe--or at least that’s what we thought.

These latest spy shots reveal that the new coupe version of the S Class is still re-ferred to by Mercedes engineers as a CL. We can clearly see the key ring used for this particular prototype and it has a label that reads “CL 217”. The internal code for the current CL is “C216” and the one before it had the code “C215.”

The steering wheel of this prototype is also different to the unit fitted in the latest 2014 S Class as it has three spokes instead of two. The clock between the central air-conditioner outlets is also missing.

Does this mean that the CL’s replacement will keep the CL name or could this simply

be Mercedes’ way of referring to the new car internally?

The automaker has never confirmed that its CL replacement will be called an S Class Coupe, despite it sharing a platform, interior and engines with the latest S Class sedan. Speculation first arose when Mer-cedes launched the E Class Coupe as its replacement for the CLK and then followed this up with a C Class Coupe. Naturally, one would assume the coupe version of the S Class would follow this trend and be labeled an S Class Coupe.

It’s possible that the CL name may be retained for this latest generation, how-ever. The CL name has a certain cachet, and its uniqueness helps distinguish it from the rest of the S Class range. This is especially important if Mercedes hopes to steal sales from high-end rivals such as the Aston Martin DB9, Bentley Continental GT and Maserati GranTurismo with its new mega coupe.

Daimler AG, following the lead of some U.S. automakers, will largely refrain from taking a traditional summer break at its car factories with models like the revamped Mercedes-Benz E class keeping assembly lines busy even as overall European auto demand slides to a 20-year low.

The full order books of the German luxury carmakers contrast with factory shutdowns

and job cuts at mass-market rivals such PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Ford Motor Co.

“Growth in the U.S. and China more than outbalances the European slowdown for the German carmakers,” said Christian Ludwig, a Dusseldorf-based analyst with Bankhaus Lampe. “Europe is no longer as important for the German luxury-car mak-ers as it used to be.”
