CHILD POVERTY IN THE CANARY ISLANDS. By Patricia Martínez. 1º Bac B. It is estimated that there are 130,000 poor people on the Canary Islands. 100,000 of these are under age and are not receiving a good nutrition because their parents cannot buy quality food. In Spain, being a poor kid it does not mean that you are always hungry, but that you have more possibilities of being undernourished. There are under age children that only have breakfast and lunch because they have them at their schools. Poor children do not live on the streets, they live in their house, most probably they do not have enough space, or they live in a stressful atmosphere. Also, in Spain, these children attend to school, however they have more difficulties to succeed. School failure is higher than the Spanish average. It is about 27% or 28 % For example in Las Palmas, Red Cross has helped more than 1,000 children by buying them school material.
