Course Objective

This course focuses on the application of financial statement information and analysis

to improve managerial decision-making. In addition, financial management concepts

and techniques will be explained and utilized in hospitality industry- related scenarios

and contexts. Emphasis will be on comprehension and interpretation of financial

information from senior management and owner perspectives. The format of this course

involves lectures, case studies, and group presentations.

This course offers both macro and micro understanding of financial analysis and related

business challenges of companies in the hospitality industry in a fast-growing but highly

competitive region. At the end of the course, participants are expected to gain the

ability and confidence to use financial analysis and management tools to better

manage short-term profitability as well as achieve sustainable financial stability of

their operations.

•Fundamental analysis of a hospitality organization’s business model, revenue

model, and finance model

•Develop a systematic comprehension of financial statements of international

hospitality companies from both management and user perspectives

•Application of quantitative and qualitative financial analysis tools for hospitality

and related organizations

•Cashflow analysis, free cash flow, and capital budgeting decision making

principles and techniques

•Debt financing instruments and weighted average cost of capital

•Trade-offs within cost-volume-profit analysis in evaluating operating alternatives

•Pricing strategies and channel decision making

Chris WH Chan - Professor of Accounting, School of

- Dean, Cornell-Nanyang Institute of

Hospitality Management

Professor Chris WH Chan is Professor of Accounting at

Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and

Dean of the Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality

Management (CNI). As Cornell faculty, Professor Chan

reports to Dean Michael Johnson of the School of Hotel

Administration. Stationed in Singapore with Pan-Asian

responsibilities, Professor Chan provides academic,

intellectual, strategic, and administrative leadership to the

institute with the mission to further elevate the Cornell

brand in Asia. Cornell University offers its prestigious 12-

month Master of Management (MMH) program as a joint

degree with Nanyang Technological University.Professor

Chan was previously Associate Professor of Accounting as

well as Assistant Dean and Director of MBA programs at

the University of Hong Kong (HKU), where he was

responsible for brand development, marketing and

admissions, financial and program management,

academic and student affairs, and corporate and media

relations. Under his leadership, the HKU MBA was

ranked by The Economist Global MBA Ranking 2010 as

No. 1 in Asia. Professor Chan has extensive teaching

experience for various MBA and EMBA programs in Hong

Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Singapore, and

Sydney. Courses taught include Accounting for Business

Decisions , Corporate Finance , Management Control,

Corporate Governance, and Social Responsibility and Sustainability. In 2009, Professor Chan was

one of five professors who were awarded the prestigious university-wide Outstanding Teaching

Award from the University of Hong Kong. He has also been a two-time winner of the Business

Faculty's Outstanding Teacher Award between 2004 and 2008.

Professor Chan has a diverse consulting and executive education portfolio with a wide range of

companies in the Asia-Pacific region. His work has focused on strategic brand development,

financial performance metrics, corporate governance, social responsibility, and sustainability. He

has also developed corporate business cases and/or taught executive education courses for a

number of clients including LVMH, ABN Amro Bank, China MinSheng Bank, Lucent Technologies,

Agilent Technologies, General Mills, Hong Kong Government Civil Service Bureau, SGS, TAL,

Shangri-la Hotels, New World Mobility, and South China Morning Post. In recent years Professor

Chan has conducted a number of very successful executive-level MBA courses at Fudan University

in Shanghai, as well as delivered development programs to executives of multinational companies

based in China. Professor Chan is frequently invited to speak at various business conferences and

workshops as a keynote or panel speaker on corporate governance, social responsibility and

sustainability, human capital development, and luxury industries in Asia.
