Moving Beyond the Rhetoric of Apology In Animal RightsSome Points to ConsiderBy Karen Davis, PhD

Dear Karen Davis & UPC,Your article Moving Beyond the

Rhetoric o Apology in AnimalRights is so inormative, motivating, and encouraging orthose o us (all o us, probably)who grow weary at times o theght or animals. Your handoutprovides animal advocates withan upliting shot in the arm andsome efective verbal tools to spread themessage. I would suggest that you send itout again or those who missed it and or those who mightneed a reresher course. A Rb, J 18, 2013

Dear Karen Davis & Staf,Even beore going vegan, I ound mysel doing what youdiscuss in your spot-on, brilliant article, Te Rhetoric oApology in Animal Rights. Te thing is, it is a rhetoric,as you do note, more prevalent in discussing arm animalsthan companion animals or pets. Axaa Ykk,J 16, 2013

    ---------------------

Often we apologize for animals and our feelings forthem. If we find ourselves apologizing, we need toask ourselves why. Is it an expression of self-doubt? Adeliberate strategy?

Butchering a living being without anything slightly

resembling what could be construed as art, except

This individual was given a pass, which is a disgrace.

    Down, the soft breast feathers

of live birds, is mixed withslaughterhouse feathers fromducks and geese to fill pillows andcoverlets at many hotels and in themaking of some designer outerwear. The feathers originate on industrialfarms where they are ripped fromthe bodies of live geese, l eavingthem bleeding in excruciating pain.Other feathers are byproducts of thefoie gras industry, in which ducksand geese are force fed with metaltubes to create diseased livers forgourmet appetizers.

Investigator Marcus Mueller tracksthe Hungarian plucking brigades men and women who go from farmto farm stripping feathers from livegeese. There are plucking brigadesin Poland, Russia and Moldova, but Hungary is the largest sourceof live-plucked feathers and down.Birds are stripped every five weeksand their bleeding wounds areroughly sewn up with a needle andthread before they are slaughteredat 6 months old. Says Mueller:

The men and women from thebrigades work without feeling, grabbing terrified geese by their

wings or legs, sometimes breakingthem, always hurting them, asthey tear out the birds feathers.

Manufacturers and retailers who saythey dont use down from live-pluckedbirds cannot prove their claim.Mueller explains: Brigades go from

farm to farm stripping the birds asthey go, then the feathers are sold tobrokers and middlemen who mix live-plucked feathers with those recoveredfrom slaughtered animals.

Birds who are not plucked al ivebut whose feathers are included inpillows, comforters and clothingare confined in filthy, disease-ridden buildings the same as thelive-plucked birds. Feathers fromslaughtered chickens are stuffedin pillows and coats along withfeathers from more than 2 billionslaughterhouse ducks each year.

    What Should I Do?

Please dont EVER buy a coat,

jacket, comforter, pillow orany other clothing, beddingor household product filled ordecorated with feathers/down, furor fleece. Read labels. If down/feathers or other animal productsare involved, skip the purchaseand choose an item made of all-manmade materials. Inform thestores customer service departmenthow down/feather productsoriginate and why you refuse tobuy them. Politely hand them thispamphlet.

When making hotel reservations, arrange in advance to have onlypolyester-filled pillows and coverletsin your room when you arrive.Explain that you want this guaranteethe same as no smoking. When you

get to the front desk on arrival, reiterate your request for feather-free pillows, and when you get to

your room, examine the pillows!Remove the pillow slips until youget to the pillow and READ THETAG. It will say if the pillow filler isdown/feathers or polyester. If down/feather pillows are in your room, callthe front desk and ask that they beremoved immediately and replacedwith feather-free pillows. Inform thehotel that you are ALLERGIC TOANIMAL ABUSE and that theirpillow policy will influence yourfuture hotel choices. Politely handthem this pamphlet.

Educate your family and friendsand look for opportunities to writeletters to the editor & participate inmedia forums about the cruelty ofdown/feather products. No one wholearns the truth will choose to wear

a coat made of cruelty or to sleep ona pillow of pain.
