Our researchAs a postgraduate student you will be joining a thriving research community that is working tirelessly to tackle the major challenges in our world and to provide innovative solutions for governments, charities, industry and society as a whole.

We nurture emerging research talent through our Research and Enterprise Training Institute (RETI) by providing our growing network of postgraduate and early career researchers with tailored training and development opportunities. From health care and pharmaceuticals to sustainable development and food security, we are making important contributions here in the UK and overseas. Our researchers have gained recognition for their contribution, including our fifth Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, awarded in 2019 for work by the Natural Resources Institute. Read on to find out about some of our fantastic work here at the university.

Fifth Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the universityThe university has won its fifth Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in recognition of

the Natural Resources Institute’s (NRI) research into managing serious animal and insect pests. This latest prize indicates the quality of world-leading research at NRI, which has improved lives across the world over many years.

Animal and insect pests bring dangerous diseases, death and hunger to millions of the world’s poorest people in developing countries, destroying crops, infrastructure and livelihoods. NRI’s teams of specialists work with local communities to provide sustainable, innovative pest management solutions as alternatives to chemicals and poisons that can severely harm users, communities, animals and the wider environment.

The expertise of NRI’s pest management specialists covers pest behaviour, chemical ecology, plant biochemistry, zoology, entomology, molecular biology and social development. They work with partners from over 50 countries across the globe, attracting funding

from many leading organisations, including UK Research and Innovation, UK Department for International Development, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Development Programme.

A revolution in maths teachingThe university is playing a key role in helping UK primary schools prepare for the introduction of the government’s new Year 4 statutory times tables test, the Multiplication Tables Check, in 2020. In 2017, Jenny Field, a professor of mathematics education at the university, designed an action research project: ‘Whole school approaches to teaching, learning and understanding times tables’. Funded by the National Maths Hub and now in its third year, it is receiving national interest.

The project includes eight practical steps that support teachers as they help children learn their times tables and, crucially, understand the maths behind what they are memorising. United Learning, the largest teaching alliance in the UK, has requested training in the programme so that they can roll it out in schools. The NCETM, the government-funded body charged with improving the teaching of mathematics nationally, has also recommended the programme.

The next generation of 3D medical devicesA research team at the university is developing 3D stents and microneedles that are revolutionising the treatment of coronary artery diseases and the administration of drugs such as insulin and anticancer substances. Using 3D printing, Professor Dennis Douroumis, Director of the Centre for Innovation in Process Engineering & Research, and his team have been developing

3D medical devices for a number of years. The stents are designed to be used in the treatment of coronary artery diseases. They are inserted into a patient’s body and deliver drugs over a one to three-month period. The microneedles are printed using a material that doesn’t cause skin irritation or toxicity and can be used to administer various drugs through the skin. Both devices are at pre-clinical stage and the research team is planning to apply for funding through research councils and industrial collaboration for the development of the products for market.

A life-changing difference for patientsAround 300,000 people in the UK have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic and incurable illness whose symptoms include fatigue, pain and bowel urgency. Pioneering research at the University of Greenwich by Dr Lesley Dibley, Reader of Nursing Research and Education in the School of Health Sciences, is helping to improve the lives of people who suffer from IBD. Dr Dibley’s research is changing the way the condition is managed. For example, it shows how dialogue between the patient and the clinical team is essential to help patients make an informed decision about stoma surgery, which involves making a small opening on the surface of the abdomen and fitting a collecting bag for bowel waste.

The results of her research have been shared with 2,500 surgeons across Europe as well as around 1,000 specialist nurses. Dr Dibley has also been named as one of the Nation’s Lifesavers by Universities UK’s MadeAtUni, a campaign which brings to life the positive impact of universities on everyday lives.

Dr Wim Vandekerckhove, a reader in business ethics, found that whistleblowers, people who expose wrongdoing in the workplace, rarely go directly to the press or relevant regulatory body. Instead, they first try to raise their concerns within their own organisations, usually more than once. According to Dr Vandekerckhove, employers do not have the structures and processes in place to deal appropriately with people who speak out. In response, he has developed a three-tier model covering not only the whistleblower’s own organisation, but also regulatory bodies and the press. This stresses the need for processes across all three sectors to protect the whistleblower and deal with concerns when they arise. The model is now part of an EU directive and will shape whistleblower legislation across all member states. Other parts of the world have also expressed an interest, and Dr Vandekerckhove’s research may help shape whistleblowing laws in other countries, such as Kosovo, Jordan and Serbia.

Hypnosis: an alternative to painkillersResearch by a psychologist at the university shows that hypnosis could offer an alternative to painkillers. Dr Trevor Thompson, Associate Professor of Clinical Research in the School of Human Sciences, led a project which found that hypnosis could reduce pain by up to 42%. Researchers examined the effects of hypnosis on 3,632 people

subjected to different forms of pain stimulation, such as extreme cold, heat, pressure and exercise. Data was collected from 85 studies across 14 countries. Based on the findings, most people would experience a 30% drop in pain levels or more under hypnosis. This rises to 42% for the 15% of the population who are highly receptive. The misuse of prescription painkillers such as codeine and fentanyl has increased greatly in recent years and is a national crisis in some countries. Hypnosis can be administered as a safe alternative quickly and easily at home with a 20-minute audio recording.

Saving energy in hospitalsAn innovation that combines engineering and computer technology has helped reduce energy consumption in part of a Kent hospital by 10%, saving £1,700 over a five-month period. Ahmad Taha, a PhD engineering student at our Medway Campus, created a system for Medway NHS Foundation Trust that collects electricity readings from meters and processes it into user-friendly information which is then displayed on a dashboard.

By conveying crucial information in a simple way, it helped raise awareness of energy usage among staff in four clinical wards and one department. It encouraged them to adopt energy-saving behaviour, such as switching off lights and being mindful of all electricity usage. The project was funded through a university scholarship and the estates and facilities department at Medway Maritime Hospital. Ahmad is constantly looking for new ways that people can interact with computers and plans to take his research further.

Our coursesBefore you apply for a postgraduate degree, you will want to find out all you can about your chosen course. To get started, just read on.

Course informationOn the following pages, you’ll find listings for our postgraduate courses. These will give you essential information about each course, including when it starts and where you’ll study. Once you’ve found a degree that interests you, visit the online page to explore the course in more depth.

Entry requirements You’ll find entry requirements on our online course pages. As well as specific exam results, some courses have additional requirements, such as a Disclosure and Barring Service check, interview or health check.

If you’re an international student who has studied qualifications from outside the UK, you can see the entry requirements from your country at gre.ac.uk/international/greenwich-in-my-country.

Don’t be concerned if you don’t have the exact qualifications we’ve asked for. We’ll often accept alternatives or take into account experience that demonstrates that you are right for the course. For instance, you may not need a degree if you are already working in the relevant industry. For guidance, just contact our recruitment team (UK students) or International Office (international/EU students). You can find their contact details on the back cover.

International studentsAll of our courses are open to international students unless otherwise stated in the course listings. If you are fee assessed as an international student but do not require a Tier 4 visa, you may

still be able to apply to a course that isn’t open to international students.

If you don’t meet the standard academic entry criteria for our postgraduate degrees, you can take a pre-Master’s course at the University of Greenwich International College (UGIC). If you don’t meet our English language requirements, we also offer pre-sessional English courses to improve your English before studying with us.

For more information on international students and UGIC, see pages 18 and 19.

Language requirementsIf you were educated in a language other than English and/or in a country where English speakers are in a minority, you’ll need to meet English language requirements. You can do this by taking an English language proficiency test, such as IELTS. Please check the online course pages, where you’ll find the specific language requirements for each course. We can also accept other tests of English language, such as GCSE English or an equivalent from your country. Please contact the International Office for details of other language qualifications we can accept.

If you need a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you’ll also be required to submit evidence of an acceptable English language qualification to UK Visas and Immigration.

Start datesMost of our courses start in September. If we provide a choice of start dates, usually September and January, you’ll find this noted in the

course listing. We are continuing to add January starts to many of our courses, so please check out our website at gre.ac.uk/jan for the latest information.

In most cases, you can begin an MPhil/PhD at any time during the year, but we recommend September or January, as this will give you the best chance to meet fellow students who are also starting their studies. Business School research students can only start in September or January.

Subject to final approvalLike all universities, we develop new courses to reflect the needs of employers, professional bodies and students. These courses must go through an approval process before they can run. Any courses that have not completed this at time of print are listed as ‘subject to final approval’ in the course lists on pages 34 to 53. Almost all these courses will be approved by the start date, but this isn’t guaranteed. If a course isn’t approved in time, it won’t run and you won’t be able to take your place. If this happens, we can help you find an alternative course at the university.

Accreditation and professional recognitionOur postgraduate degrees are designed to meet the needs of employers. This is recognised by leading professional bodies, who accredit many of our

courses. For some degrees, successful completion also leads to exemption from professional exams. Details of accreditation, and any exemptions, are given on the online course pages.

Research degreesYou’ll find studying a research degree with us a rewarding experience, as you’ll get to work with academics whose research has brought real benefits to people’s lives. You can find examples of this on pages 22 to 27.

For a few subjects, we offer a Master’s by Research, but most of our research students undertake an MPhil/PhD. Usually, you’ll begin your studies with the MPhil before transferring to the PhD if you’ve made satisfactory progress. You’ll be guided throughout your studies by a supervisory team who will help you shape your ideas and support your progress.

If you have a research proposal, you should contact a potential supervisor and research group at the university who may be able to support your research. Some of our MPhil/PhD students apply for a funded studentship and join one of our established projects.

For more on financing your research studies, see page 21. You can find out about contacting a supervisor or research group, and get other information about applying for a research degree, on page 54.

DisclaimerThis edition of the postgraduate study guide describes the services and courses that the university intends to offer in the 2021/22 academic year. We make every effort to ensure this information is as accurate as possible at the time of printing. However, this information is subject to change over time and it is important that you check the university’s website for the most up-to-date information. Where changes have been made to the information set out in this study guide, any significant changes to a course will be notified to any prospective student who has registered an interest in the course and also notified to applicants at the time of making an offer. If you have any comments about the study guide, please contact us at [email protected] (UK students) and [email protected] (international/EU students) as appropriate. The University of Greenwich will do all that it reasonably can do to provide educational services as described on its website and in this study guide. Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control mean that we cannot provide such educational services. This might be because of, for example, industrial action by university staff or third parties, the unanticipated departure or absence of key members of university staff, acts of terrorism, the acts of any government or local authority, epidemic or pandemic of disease, academic changes within subject areas, or where the numbers recruited to a course are so low that it is not possible to deliver an appropriate quality of education for students enrolled on it.In these circumstances, the university will take all reasonable steps to minimise the resultant disruption to those services, for example by making reasonable modifications, but to the full extent that it is possible under the general law, the university excludes liability for any loss and/or damage suffered by any applicant. The modifications we make may be to: the content and syllabus of courses, including in relation to placements; the timetable, location and number of classes; the content or method of delivery of programmes of study; the examination process; and the timing and method of assessment. Many of the changes that we make are in response to feedback from students and are intended to improve the experience of students and student outcomes.Where circumstances demand an unavoidable change or where it is necessary for the university to discontinue a programme of study, the university will take reasonable steps to minimise the effect for applicants and all significant changes will be notified promptly as set out above. Our Student Protection Plan (docs.gre.ac.uk/rep/sas/student-protection-plan) sets out the

steps we will take to protect the quality and continuity of study for students. If you have any particular concerns regarding any proposed changes, you should make the university aware as soon as possible by contacting us via the email addresses provided above. You should also be aware that some of the courses listed in the study guide may be subject to final approval. In the unlikely event that a course is not approved by its start date, the course will not run and you will not be able to take up your place. Should this happen, you will be informed by the university and assistance will be provided to those who have been offered a place to find a suitable alternative course at the university. If a course is awaiting final approval, this will be indicated clearly in the course listings in the study guide. The study guide provides core information on our courses. As a student, you receive further material describing the teaching, examination, assessment and other educational services, and information on the social side of student life at the time that any offer is made to you and subsequently upon enrolment. Your application to the university will be considered in accordance with the university’s admissions policy and procedure, which also sets out your right to complain if you are dissatisfied with the handling of your application. Should you go on to enrol as a student of the university, you will be asked to agree to the university’s principal conditions of registration and your studies will be undertaken and governed in accordance with the university’s student regulations, policies and procedures. Please note that the principal conditions of registration and the student regulations, policies and procedures are updated annually for the start of the academic year. While changes are not usually significant, the current year’s versions should be treated as indicative and you should familiarise yourself with the documents applicable to your year of registration when you enrol. A summary of changes to regulations and policies is provided to continuing students at the start of each academic year. If you become a student, this notice shall constitute a term of the contract between you and the University of Greenwich. Any offer of a place is made on the basis that you consent to this notice as part of the contract. To view the above terms and conditions online, which include links to the admissions policy and procedure, principal conditions of registration and the student regulations, policies and procedures documents, please visit gre.ac.uk/about-us/governance/legal-information/terms-and-conditions.
