4 Postgraduate study in International Management and Business
Welcome to Royal Holloway, University of London. You are about to embark on your next big challenge, a University of London MBA or MSc, developed by Royal Holloway.
Our MBA and MSc in International Management have been accredited by AMBA, the Association of MBAs in the UK, putting us in an elite group of MBA providers. This important quality accreditation gives you the assurance that studying the programme will
give you the opportunity to achieve a qualification that is recognised worldwide.
Our MSc in International Business has been developed for students who would find it difficult to attend the face-to-face plenary sessions and who are in need of a more compact programme of studies. Both MSc programmes provide a firm foundation for postgraduate research and study and offer an excellent basis from which to further careers in management.
At Royal Holloway, we are committed to excellence in both teaching and research and our programmes fully reflect this ethos.
A history of academic excellence
Blending tradition and innovationFounded in 1886, Royal Holloway is one of the UK’s leading research university institutions. Ranked 26th out of 116 UK universities in the online 2013 Complete University Guide, the programmes outlined in this leaflet are based largely on our extensive experience of running business and management development courses for leading international companies.
Our researchAs a Management School we aim to apply the insights of social science to the management of private, public and voluntary sector organisations. A shared feature of our research is its international and comparative focus, with a strong historical, sociological and political-economic approach to management issues and activities.
Intellectual rigourStudying diverse organisations and practices is central to our educational methods. This approach is particularly appropriate to the intellectual rigour required at postgraduate level. Many members of the School are consultants to, or directors of, a range of international businesses. The teaching and study materials for the programmes draw on deep, grounded, and diverse international business knowledge.

Albert Hetherington Jones MSc International Management, UK
‘I would definitely recommend the degree to anybody who needs flexibility and is unable to do an onsite course. I already travelled a lot, and I knew for
a while that I was going to be moving abroad, and I knew that my studies could follow me wherever I went. It is a great course for anybody who is internationally mobile and has a high degree of uncertainty in their lives. Nowadays, a lot of people, working for a lot of large companies, are in such a situation.’
Albert is an Account Director for an advertising/marketing services company.

Online tutorial supportFor each module, you are assigned a tutor whose support is just an email away, whether you need academic advice or guidance on study skills. You’ll also be part of a worldwide community of students who, like you, are managing a demanding schedule of work, study and family life. The online forum and seminars provide a link to your fellow students and an opportunity to discuss the issues involved.
Group workDrawing on practical application of theory gained from the study of the core subjects on the MBA, group work forms an important part of the MBA schedule and experience. It comprises a group presentation and a written group
report, focussing on relevant management issues, functions, and organisational outcomes.
IT requirementsSo that you can make the best use of the resources available, including the online student portal, you need regular access to the internet and a computer.
Time allocationProvided you complete the MBA or MSc within five years, and you follow the rules of progression given in the Regulations, you can study at your own pace. For instance, you do not have to take examinations every year. As a rough guide, if you wish to complete in the minimum study period (two years for the MBA) you should be prepared for not less than 17 hours of study per week.
AssessmentExaminations are offered twice a year (May and October) in over 180 countries worldwide. You can sit them locally, whenever you’re ready.
We aim to give our students as much choice as possible about how, when and where they study. Some prefer the flexibility of being able to study independently, at their own pace, using our study materials. Others prefer the benefits of face-to-face teaching and classroom support, and choose to pay for additional educational support at a local independent institution.
We currently work with a growing network of 70-plus independent teaching institutions worldwide that provide tuition support for our students. We refer to these institutions as recognised centres and there
are two categories: Affiliate Centres have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the quality of teaching, support and administration; Registered Centres have demonstrated acceptable standards for the purpose of supporting International Programmes students in preparing for examinations.
For a list of and further information about recognised centres, including brief profiles and the programmes for which they are recognised to teach, please visit: apps.londoninternational.ac.uk/onlinesearch/institutions

Benjamin Zhu MBA in International Management student, Germany‘The unique part that I liked the most is that it is not pure distance learning, but blended learning where students meet and attend mandatory seminars and projects. To make the programme more interesting and lively, the lecturers are very proactive in the forum discussions where we can participate and discuss concepts with students from all over the world. We also have very detailed study guides that lead us to achieve the objectives of each module. The decision to study the MBA programme is both for personal and professional advancement. I have learned a lot from the programme – and from the discussions with the experienced lecturers and classmates – and am able to implement many theories into practice at work. The programme has also helped me to think strategically.’

In Hong Kong, HKU SPACE and Royal Holloway collaborate to run this programme. First launched in 2001, the programme reached its 21st intake in April 2013.
Royal Holloway confers the degree; graduates of the programme can choose to attend their graduation ceremony in Hong Kong or London.
Classes are usually held on Saturdays and Sundays (and occasionally on weekday evenings) and take place in Admiralty, Hong Kong. Students have access to HKU SPACE library facilities, an especially useful resource when writing the dissertation.
You receive the following tuition from HKU SPACE and Royal Holloway academics:
Core modules14 hours of lectures by HKU SPACE academics, plus 10 hours of face-to-face master classes by Royal Holloway academics.
Elective modulesStudents can choose from any of the available electives but only 4 elective modules are taught in Hong Kong. This will include 14 hours of lectures by HKU SPACE academics, plus 10 hours of master classes by Royal Holloway academics (face-to-face or via video-conferencing).
Research Method moduleTwo 3-hour sessions will be offered in each of the two teaching terms, all by Royal Holloway academics.
We have exam centres in over 180 countries, so you can choose to sit your examinations in locations other than Hong Kong, if you wish. The tuition fee for students studying via HKU SPACE is different and can be paid in four instalments. Please contact HKU SPACE for further information (details opposite). The fee includes textbooks, study materials, and reader’s guide.

UK plenary sessionsPlenary 1 (Introduction)
Travel and accommodation
Plenary 2 (Consultancy Group Project)
We strongly recommend that you attend the first week of the plenary as early as possible in your studies. Apart from academic and social group activities, week one includes a range of master classes on all the core modules which will be very helpful for your studies and your examinations. This week will not include any assessed work and there are no prerequisites for attending the first week of the plenary.
You are required to have attempted the assessment (tutor-marked assignment and examination) for all nine MBA or all seven MSc core modules prior to attending week two of the plenary session. This consists of career and personal development sessions and focuses on your case study group project. The assessed part of the plenary – the group presentation and report – also takes place during this week.
Royal Holloway will provide the necessary support and documentation for students who require visas to attend these sessions in the UK.
All students are required to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation when attending the plenary sessions at Royal Holloway. However, we will provide you with comprehensive information on how and where to book accommodation on campus or any other close-by (walking distance) accommodation in a B&B or guest house/hotel.
Held in June/July, the sessions are intensive, but you will get a lot out of them. In addition, the face-to-face element allows you to work in a small group and practice leadership skills.
The two plenary sessions are compulsory for students registered for the MBA and MSc in International Management. Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate students, and students on the International Business programme can opt to attend the plenary sessions if they wish.
Taking place over two separate weeks at Royal Holloway, the plenary sessions are incredibly useful. They provide an opportunity to receive face-to-face teaching from Royal Holloway academics and to develop networks with your colleagues on the programme.

Xenia Borissova-Demidova MBA in International Management student, UK‘The MBA fit perfectly with my career plan – every new module opens a door to a variety of subjects, or else it enriches already acquired specialisms. Some subjects are sufficient by themselves, others inspire you to dig deeper. The best time to network is at the MBA on-campus plenary sessions set in the gorgeous Royal Holloway campus, set in 135 acres of woodland next to Windsor. I would connect with a wider MBA community via LinkedIn, which is a tool I rate very highly. It is the only mode of studying that allows me to combine the seemingly impossible – to progress academically, to still be able to travel a lot, to have free evenings, to fit in family time and social life, and, generally, to do it the way that fits for you.’
Xenia works for BBC News as a Legal and Business Affairs Manager. Read an interview with her in our online magazine, London Connection: http://bit.ly/xenia-borissova
Face-to-face sessions
Plenary group workThe group work forms an important part of the MBA and MSc in International Management schedule and experience. The group project comprises a group presentation and a written group report.
The presentation and report focus on relevant management issues, functions, and organisational outcomes. The group work draws on practical application of theory gained from the study of the core subjects on the MBA and MSc.
Session aims 1 To assist you in understanding
the linkages between the various core management functions – Accounting and finance, Human resources management, Organizational behaviour, Strategy, Operations management, Information systems, and marketing.
2 To provide a forum in which to discuss the practical elements of leadership and group working.
3 To provide an environment in which distance learning students can experience the networking aspects so important in an MBA and MSc programme. The project material is case study based, with each group being given a case study on which to base their presentations and report.
The first part of the project focuses on literature review and problem identification, and the second part focuses on case study analysis and interpretation.
In both portions of the project you are expected to gather further information from library and web sources, evaluate this information and use it to inform their approach to the case study assigned. There is also a strong emphasis on group dynamics.
Assessment Group work is a compulsory part of the MBA and MSc in International Management. The Group work will be assessed by a group presentation and a group report.

As an International Programmes student, you register with the University of London for one of its awards. The academic direction of your programme – including the syllabus, assessment, learning resources and, where given, academic support – is the responsibility of a particular College, or consortium of Colleges, of
the University of London, known as the ‘Lead College’. Royal Holloway is the Lead College for the programmes in this prospectus.
When you graduate with a degree, diploma or certificate from the University of London you will be sent two documents – a final diploma (the parchment you receive on graduation) and
a Diploma Supplement. The final diploma indicates
that you were registered with the University of London and awarded a University of London degree or diploma, and give the name of the Lead College which conducted the examinations. The University of London logo and the Vice-Chancellor’s signature are incorporated.
The Diploma Supplement describes the nature, level and content of the programme you successfully completed and includes a transcript of modules taken and marks achieved, as well as the overall classification. It also provides further information about the role of the Lead College and method of study.
