COURSES

For legal professionals, this program will provide a competitive, high quality and flexible coursework Masters for their extended development. In addition, the program will appeal to those wishing to further develop their scholarly skills in legal research and writing.

The program provides access to a range of areas to suit both domestic and international students proceeding directly from undergraduate law study, as well as experienced legal practitioners wishing to specialise in areas of commercial law. The program includes a range of elective courses suited to those with a particular interest in international and comparative law.

MaStER Of LawS PROgRaM StRUCtURE

Program LengthThe expected duration of the program is 1 year of full-time study.

What is the time commitment?The Master of Laws is equivalent to one year of full-time study (24 units). It is possible to study the program part-time over two to six years.

Seminar-style teaching is employed, with one course usually involving 24 hours of class time. The delivery of courses can vary, with some being taught over a twelve week period with classes in the evenings. Others are taught intensively over two or three weekends, or a single week.

Although listed under distinct semesters, courses start continuously throughout the year.

Graduate Diploma in Business Law

Graduate Certificate in Business Law

Designed for those seeking a postgraduate degree in business studies with a focus in the law, the Business Law programs provide business professionals with competitive, high quality, and flexible coursework qualifications that expand their current horizon.

Participants study challenging areas of commercial law, although completion of a degree does not lead to entry into legal practice. The programs include a range of elective courses suited to those with a particular interest in international and comparative law.

The Business Law degrees are ‘nested’ programs, giving students the choice of starting with a Graduate Certificate (4 courses) or Graduate Diploma (8 courses), and then progressing to a Masters (12 courses) if they wish.

BUSinESS Law PROgRaM StRUCtURE

Program LengthThe expected duration of the program based on full-time study is:

• Masters 1.5 years

• Graduate Diploma 1 year

• Graduate Certificate 0.5 years

What is the time commitment?The Master of Business Law is equivalent to one and half years of full-time study (36 units). It is possible to study the program part-time over two to eight years.

The Graduate Diploma in Business Law is equivalent to one year of full-time study (24 units). It is possible to study the program part-time over two to six years.

The Graduate Certificate in Business Law is equivalent to one half year of full-time study (12 units). It is possible to study the program part-time over one to four years.

MaStER Of COMPaRatiVE Law (aDELaiDE/MannhEiM)

The Master of Comparative Law degree is conducted jointly by the Schools of Law at the University of Adelaide and the University of Mannheim, Germany. Students spend one semester at Adelaide and one semester at Mannheim and undertake a dissertation at their home institution.

The University of Mannheim is one of Germany’s leading universities with 11,000 students enrolled, providing a personal atmosphere. Considered one of the most beautiful universities in Germany, it is located in the baroque palace in the heart of Mannheim – the second largest city in Baden-Wurttemberg, known as the economic and cultural hub of the Rhine-Neckar triangle.

The program enables students to study the different codes of law throughout the world such as common law, civil law and Islamic law. It also enables Australian students to obtain a more detailed understanding of the legal framework of the European Union. The entire program is conducted in English.

What is the time commitment?The Master of Comparative Law is equivalent to one and one quarter years of full-time study (30 units). It is possible to study the program part-time over two to five years.

In Adelaide seminar-style teaching is employed, with one course usually involving 24 hours of class time. The delivery of courses can vary, with some being taught over a twelve week period (often in the

evenings). Others are taught intensively over two or three weekends, or a single week. Courses are listed under semesters to give an indication of the part of the year in which they are taught.

Mannheim CoursesStudents will spend four months of study (September to December) at the University of Mannheim. Courses offered at Mannheim are streamed into a range of areas, including International Law, Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, European Law, International Business Transactions and Insurance Law.

All students must complete 20 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) points which will include Comparative Law (Mannheim) 4 ECTS points, 12 ECTS from a discipline stream and a 4 ECTS Mannheim Law Elective course.

Additionally, the Zelling-Gray Scholarship in Law has been established to encourage postgraduate study in any one or more of constitutional law, administrative law, commercial law, legal history, law reform or comparative law.

• Master of Philosophy 1-2 years

• Doctor of Philosophy 2-4 years

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for both Local and International applicants are:

Doctor of Philosophy Relevant Honours degree of Bachelor of at least IIA standard or equivalent or a degree of Master from the University of Adelaide or equivalent and which contains a substantial research component.

Master of Philosophy Relevant Bachelor degree at distinction average or higher, or equivalent.

fEESLocal students All commencing higher degree by research places for Australian residents are funded by the Australian Government under the Research Training Scheme.
