Duncan Hobday, UK, PostgraduateCertificate in Intellectual Property 2010-11, GlaxoSmithKline Prize for Best Patentstudent in the Cert IP, Trainee PatentAttorney, W. P. Thompson & Co

“I had been in the profession for arounda year and this Certificate formed thenext part of my training to become a

qualified UK Patent Attorney. I found the content and deliveryof the course exceeded my expectations.

“The lecturers gave a solid and accessible introduction to allthe general aspects of intellectual property law as well asoffering viewpoints and analysis from both academics andprofessionals. The friendly atmosphere meant that it was easyto meet, discuss the course and socialise with trainees fromother firms. The course has provided a great foundation forme to build on. It gave me the opportunity to study and learnabout aspects of the law in depth, which I am now able topractically apply in my work. My experience at Queen Mary, although short, was extremely rewarding and enjoyable.”

Emily Cheah, Malaysia, MSc Law and Finance 2011-12

“Before coming to Queen Mary, I did aLaw LLB at UCL. I decided to undertakepostgraduate study because I felt thatgiven the current economic conditions,it was necessary to do everything I couldpossibly do to distinguish myself from

other candidates vying for the same job. The MSc Law &Finance is unique in that it offered those with a lawbackground, like me, to get a foothold in economics andfinance subjects. It is one of the very few institutions in theUK to offer this degree, which I felt would be extremelyadvantageous for my future job prospects. Also, it was clearthat the School are composed of giants in their field – I wouldbe learning from the best!

“The teachers have been excellent at fostering a friendly and open learning atmosphere. You are encouraged to askquestions, both in and out of the lecture theatre – and help isalways at hand. This open policy ensures the material is trulyengaging and rewarding. Also, because the course is cross-disciplinary, almost everyone on the course, whether they arefrom an economics, law or professional background, ischallenged to learn something new. The course directors takegreat pains to invite extremely illustrious and high-profilespeakers to deliver module lectures – this gives you a realinsight into the reality of working in industry.”

Nicholas Lawn, UKAssociate, International Arbitration and Litigation Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (UK) LLPDiploma in International Arbitration2011-12

“As a senior associate in theInternational Arbitration group at

Skadden in London, with a number of years of practicalexperience, I was interested not so much in the nuts andbolts of arbitration as in the conceptual framework of thearea. The Diploma has certainly deepened my understandingof this framework as well as the current issues and debateswithin the discipline. The international and comparativeapproach to the subject has not only broadened myknowledge of regulation in key arbitral fora but has sharpenedmy understanding of the positions taken on importantprocedural issues under English law.

“Of course, there are now many arbitration specific coursesoffered in London (and throughout the world) from which tochoose. The Diploma at Queen Mary, however, must be theoldest and one of the best. I have been able to achieve myacademic objectives taught by an outstanding faculty, both at the cutting edge of academic research and deeplyexperienced in practice, and I have been able to do this whilecontinuing to work in my firm. While this takes some jugglingof commitments, it is entirely possible to do.

“Many of the students on the Diploma course are alreadyqualified lawyers in a range of jurisdictions. Attending theDiploma has, therefore, also allowed me to meet many otherpractitioners of international arbitration from jurisdictions farand wide, from San Jose through Prague to Mumbai –learning from each the nuances of arbitration practice in theirjurisdictions...and also providing a great way to build up anetwork of international contacts.”

Deborah Dudda, GermanyEnglish and European Law LLB and LLM in Competition Law 2011-12

“I completed my LLB degree at QueenMary with an Erasmus year in Parisbefore enrolling on the LLM incompetition law. The standard ofteaching at Queen Mary is excellent.

My professors have been helpful and organised and alwaysapproachable. Throughout the academic year I have also hada variety of guest speakers teach my courses which wereacademics and practitioners alike. I really enjoy the learningaspect of the whole LLM, as well as the interaction anddiscussions with students from all over the world.

“The advantage of the campus is that everything is close by,especially if you are new to the city. You have the gym andthe library at a stone's throw from the accommodation, so no excuses there! Another plus point is that if you live oncampus, you will meet and connect with people from yourcourse faster and have more time to forge friendships andexplore the city together.”

Omosede Okpiaru, Nigeria, LLM in Tax Law 2011-12Winner of the University of Lagos/CCLS Scholarship

“I completed my LLB at the Universityof Lagos in Nigeria, and since beingcalled to the bar, worked in both thebanking industry and the Lagos state

internal revenue service. I felt it was time to do a Mastersprogramme and decided to focus on taxation law. Since thebeginning of this session, I have been enrolled on the LLM atQueen Mary, University of London.

“My research showed that Queen Mary is one of only a fewuniversities that offers the LLM in taxation. This has been ahuge boost to my career objectives, offering me the chance to compare various tax regimes. I have taken courses in bothUK and EU tax laws; in my courses, I have discovered thedifferent theoretical underpinnings of tax regimes in majorcountries. Another advantage of studying here is its locationin central London, a major European commercial and politicalcentre. I must also point out, that as a visually impairedstudent, I have received tremendous assistance, both fromthe department and the international office.”

Ana Georgina Alba Betancourt, Mexico,Current PhD Student

Alternative Dispute resolution forIntellectual Property Right disputes in Mexico and the UK

“After qualifying in Mexico and havingworked as a Law Clerk, I wanted to

pursue my postgraduate studies abroad, since my maininterest is in the international business law field. I heard aboutQueen Mary from one of my colleagues on the Master inBucerius Law School, Germany, and after doing someresearch I discovered that Queen Mary is one of the bestUniversities in the UK, especially in my fields of interest. Ihave now finished the second year of research in Arbitrationof Intellectual Property, thanks to the sponsorship of theMexican government. Queen Mary organised two intensiveweeks of research seminars at IALS which I found veryinteresting and helpful. Once a week we also attended aseminar at Queen Mary, which I considered very important, especially at a very early stage of the research, when youdon't really know how and where to start your research, oreven how to coordinate it with your supervisor. PhD life canbe very lonely, but with the activities that Queen Maryorganises, you have the chance to meet up with the otherPhD students, whom could be doing something related toyour research, which is great for exchanging ideas. I thinkthat interacting with fellow PhD students enriches your ownresearch and I'm very glad that at QM this is encouraged, together with the support of the supervisors.”

Sarah Singer, UK, Current PhD Student

The Impact of Antiterrorist Measures on the Exclusion of Individuals fromRefugee Status in the UK

“I graduated from the LLB at QueenMary in 2008. After some travel, Idecided to continue my studies and

did the LLM at UCL, before starting the PhD at Queen Mary in 2010.

“I applied to do my PhD at Queen Mary because I reallyenjoyed my time here as an undergraduate. I think theteachers focus much more on the students han they might doat other universities, and are very approachable and down toearth. The Law Department as a whole is receptive to newideas and approaches. The postgraduate/ staff seminars andlectures give people at all stages oftheir research the chance toshare their work with others, and receive feedback. Studying ona research based course means you have much less guidanceon what you should be reading and how much work you shouldbe producing. You have to be very self motivated, and receptive to others’ comments and suggestions as to the direction yourwork is taking.

I have an amazing supervisor. She is always supportive, butcrucially, also gives me extensive critical feedback on mywork. She is always on hand to meet or answer any queries Ihave, and goes out of her way to let me know about research, lectures or any other opportunities that she thinks will be ofinterest.”
