No. 34 11th November 2015

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love endures for ever (Psalm 117: 1)

Dear Parents/Guardians Someone commented to me the other day that she feels her life is busier than it has ever been and yet time seemed to pass by so much quicker nowadays, compounding her busyness. The pace of life at OLG certainly is not easing off!

• The building program is on track against its timeline. • The school's 2016 provisional budget is virtually complete and with the aid of the necessary school

fee increases we will be able to present a balanced budget with no reduction in services, unlike a good number of schools in this region.

• Our Year Five and Six students are loving their dance lessons, coming out of them perspiring and flushed in the face but smiling nonetheless.

• We have a steady trickle of families approaching us to enrol their children for next year and, after visiting classrooms and walking about the school, all make comment on the behaviour and engagement levels of our children.

Prayers for Peace

Many of our students joined Sr Joseph and Sr Irene in the convent yard at lunchtime yesterday, to pray for peace in the world.

Coming Events

• School Fete

• Book Fair and Free Dress Day

The downside to being successful in Tournament of Minds is that we have to pay for the trip east. We have been state champions in one discipline or another for the last five years in succession. Each year the parents of team members contribute the largest proportion of the cost, which is combined with the school's cash contribution but we also need to do some fundraising. These two events scheduled for next week are part of that 'annual' effort. The Book Fair is a great opportunity to purchase some quality reading material for your children for the coming holidays.

God Bless

Chris Kenworthy Principal

• Mother Foundress Day.

One of the special aspects of OLG is its close association with the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Each year we celebrate the feast day of Blessed Frances Siedliska, the foundress of the Order. This year we will do this on Wednesday 25 November with mass at 9.00am. It would be lovely if you could join us. Another standout feature of OLG is the strength and involvement of parents and grandparents in the daily life of the school. So many of the school's programs and activities are wither made possible or enriched because we have so many people willing to give of their time and expertise. Not since I worked in small country schools have I been a part of such a committed and involved community. It is a defining aspect of OLG. The beneficiaries of this involvement are our students but because we enjoy such child-focused classroom staff, they too gain from the efforts of the volunteers in that they are able to utilise this labour force to help realise some of their teaching goals. To both celebrate and thank them for their involvement, the school staff will host a morning tea in the school hall immediately following the Mother Foundress Mass. I strongly encourage you to attend, even if for a short time, so that the staff members can show their appreciation for your partnership in the nurturing and formation of our students.

• Interschool Athletics

A couple of times this week I have been asked what 'division' OLG is in. In truth it took about five years at OLG before I became aware that there was more to the competition than the group of schools we competed against. OLG has been in 'A' division for all of my time here and I was unaware of the fact that there is a 'B' division and that a school can be relegated from A to B! Happily we have nearly always featured in the top three or thereabouts. This Thursday we again join in competition with the other seven schools in 'A' division.

• Remembrance Day

This morning our Year Four, Five and Six classes attended the RSL’s Remembrance Day service at the new War Memorial. It was a wonderful service and our students were great ambassadors for OLG.

Waste Wise On Wednesday the 4th of November 5G and 5B took part in a Waste Wise audit. Both classes took part in the audit because in 2016 our school has chosen to be a Waste Wise school run by the Waste Authority. We were given half of the rubbish that our school throws out for one day, we had to sort it out into separate categories. Surprisingly, when we took part in the audit we found the most significant items (by weight) were • Food scraps (37%) • Fruit & Vegetable scraps (21%) • Whole fruit (9%) Our next step is to use the results from our waste audit to write a waste plan for our school. The main reason for this is to cut down on the amount of waste we produce each day at OLG. We all enjoyed taking part in the audit and we loved the experience. We are looking forward to begin part of the program next year. Jessica Meyers 5Blue

So grab your wheelbarrow, shovel & gloves and come along to a busy bee on Saturday 28th November, 2015 from 9.30 am to help move the beds, the more the merrier. Sausage sizzle will be provided for lunch with refreshments at the end of the day to reward all the effort. Please leave donations at front office for collection. Thank you Lisa Archer 0427036106 From Fr Patrick: Our theme of learning about mercy for the Year of Mercy is challenging for being a merciful person makes spiritual demands on us to change our way of living our lives. This week’s way forward into the Year of Mercy is to avoid Gossip. When we speak about others we can be taking away their reputation and good name. Gossip can be such a habit that avoiding it may be very difficult to change our ways. To quote Pope Francis, “It is so terrible to gossip. At first it may seem like a nice thing, even amusing, like enjoying a candy. But in the end, it fills the heart with bitterness and even poisons us.” When we add this way to be merciful to the two already discussed namely daring to really care, don’t judge then we realise to be a merciful person really means to be counter-cultural different to our popular culture. See you on Sunday! Fr. Patrick (9447 3137)
