44 SAFE & VAULT TECHNOLOGY | September/October 2015 www.savta.org
B ack in the mid ’90s, when I first got into safe work seriously, one of the first new electronic lock “certification class-
es” I took was for the Ilco 515 (see Figure 1). The lock was pretty short-lived because
after Unican gobbled up Ilco, Kaba gob-bled up Unican. And, since Kaba already had a line of locks, they killed the 515 along with all the other Ilco safe locks. If I’m not mistaken, this was somewhere around 2000-2001.
An Old Newfangled LockI installed one of these for a local chap-ter of the Vietnam Veterans of America on one of their safes. They wanted one of those “new fangled pushbutton locks”, and since I had taken the certification/sales pitch class on these, that’s what I chose to install.
A TRIP DOWN THE
SPINDLE HOLE
Blast-from-the-past Ilco 515 challenges the memory and demands precise technique.

It was only a handful that I sold and in-stalled, and I had all but forgotten about them. But a couple weeks ago, I got a phone call from one of the new board members. Apparently they hadn’t used the safe in years, and now nobody knew the combination.
I’ve done steady work for their bar over the years and am very familiar with the safes in that office. But this safe was in a room in the other end of the building, and I hadn’t laid eyes – let alone hands – on it since I installed the lock almost two decades ago. But I remembered it! Well, at least I remembered the lock. It was one of the first e-locks I’d ever sold and installed.
I gotta admit, though, when the guy said it was on a “post office safe”, I started to sweat a little bit. Some of those things have some of the nastiest HP I’ve ever drilled. I did one in Joe Cortie’s GSA class a long time ago, and I remember it to this day! Fortu-nately, this was just a fire safe (Figures 2-4).
A Simple PlanAnyway, the guy told me that he was get-ting ready to go on vacation, and that he would call me when he got back to have me come out and open the safe. Having long forgotten just about everything about these locks and NEVER having drilled one, I went into scramble mode as soon as I got the followup call.
Perusing the ClearStar archives and Dave McOmie’s books, I came up with what seemed like a fairly simple method for opening one of these locks: going right down the spindle hole! It’s done by angle drilling next to the spindle hub, towards the lock bolt, then inserting a thin, bent wire to move the hook (more on that later) towards the drive cam (Figure 5, courtesy of Dave McOmie, from NSO, Autumn 2001). But because of the size of

32 KEYNOTES JULY / AUGUST 2015 WWW.ALOA.ORG
When you’re trying to source the right door security hard-ware, there’s no sub-stitute for a knowl-
edgeable, highly trained technical sales rep. A great sales rep will understand your business, draw on their own field experience to help solve problems, and go the extra mile for you.
That’s what Harry, a locksmith, recent-ly discovered. While placing a small or-der for key blanks with Security Lock Distributors, a large wholesale distribu-tor of door security hardware, he was amazed at the level of attention he re-ceived. A technical sales rep at Security Lock Distributors quickly provided the quote he needed, and readily answered all of his questions. Harry had initially apologized for the size of his order, but the rep assured him that no request was ever too small.
“Many tech support reps have given me wrong or outdated part information because they don’t give these small orders their full attention,” says Harry, “But the Security Lock Distributors rep always navigates the occasional messes and gives me the correct information for ordering and shipping.”
As Harry discovered, the best sales reps aren’t just waiting around to sell you products and process your order. They’re ready and willing to work hard to help de-termine your business needs and deliver the right solution.
Experienced locksmiths putting their knowledge to work One reason that great sales reps can of-fer such valuable, hands-on help is that many of them have years of experience doing your exact job. At Security Lock Distributors, the technical sales team is comprised of former locksmiths, systems

integrators, and other professionals ex-perienced in areas like door hardware installation and access control technol-ogy. Tom, a former locksmith who’s now a Technical Sales Rep at Security Lock Distributors, explains, “Because of our experience in the field, we can visualize what our customers are doing and know which products they need to help com-plete their job”
As an example of the kind of useful knowledge sales reps can offer, Tom mentions the confusion that can hap-pen with electric strike installation. Fre-quently used with intercoms, an elec-tric strike must be compatible with the lock that needs to be released. “Since the locks often aren’t installed by the same locksmith, we have to first help the cus-tomer figure out what kind of lock they have. That can take a lot of time, but it’s worth it, because then we can tell them exactly what kind of strike they need,” he says.
Tom has also relied on his experience to help customers solve issues with exit devices, which are made specifically for either hollow metal and wood doors or narrow-stile doors. “We ask them to send pictures so we can understand exactly what we’re working with.” says Tom, “That way we can be sure that we’re help-ing them choose the right product.”
Talk to a voice you can trustWhen issues like the ones Tom describes arise, it can be helpful and comforting to talk to someone who can not only relate to your situation, but also offer solutions. “Our customers like having a familiar voice to talk to. We get a feel for their approach to problems and can anticipate what they need.”
And as far as the kind of product infor-mation a good sales rep can offer…well, that can range from traditional mechani-cal hardware to the very latest high-tech systems.
Ready to help you with new technology It used to be that locksmiths only worked with mechanical hardware. Now, many are encountering more high tech products and systems. And that’s another example where a good technical sales rep can be an invaluable asset. Many have experience in systems integration or have factory certification in access control technology. They can help you understand the newest electronic devices, their capabilities, and installation requirements.
Customers depend on technical sales reps for deep knowledge in all areas of door security hardware to help them get their jobs done right. That’s why Secu-rity Lock Distributors has invested in
a technical sales team that’s renowned throughout the industry for their high level of expertise and service. With over 700 years of experience between them and access to a huge inventory, the Tech-nical Sales Representatives at Security Lock Distributors are helping locksmiths throughout the country succeed at their business, every day.
