2015 Election Results | ALOA SPAI Financial Report | State of the Association
28 KEYNOTES JULY / AUGUST 2015 WWW.ALOA.ORG
It is the responsibility of the executive director to report the State of the Association and the financial condi-tion to the membership annually prior to the convention membership meeting. (The financial report is on page 34.)
The ALOA board of directors establishes ends, or goals, for the association. The executive director establishes the means, or methods to fulfill the ends and, with the assistance of the ALOA board and the professional staff, carries out these means to achieve the ends.
The board of directors establishes and prioritizes the ends: education, recognition, communication, legislation, profes-sionalism and membership to better address the needs of the membership.
STATE OF THE ASSOCIATIONHere’s a summary of ALOA’s accomplishments on behalf of our members during the past year. By Mary A. May, Executive Director
WWW.ALOA.ORG JULY / AUGUST 2015 KEYNOTES 29
The governance requires that the execu-tive director and comptroller submit a re-port to the board during the spring and fall board meetings, as well as at the annual convention. This report is a condensed ver-sion of some of that reporting to the board over the past year, focusing on the ends.
The Bylaws of ALOA now allow for the establishment of divisions. Current divi-sions include the Safe and Vault Tech-nicians Association (SAVTA), the In-ternational Association of Investigative Locksmiths (IAIL), ALOA Latino and the ALOA Institutional Locksmiths (AIL), all of which make for a better association and enhancement to the security indus-try. Each member of ALOA is eligible to join the divisions if applicable to their professional skills, with the exception of the AIL, which includes those employed at institutions and facilities such as uni-versities, hospitals, government or other related entities.
EducationOne of ALOA’s chief priorities is to have an educated membership that’s prepared for the future.
Members shall have timely updates, technical assistance and access to basic, intermediate and advanced training, al-lowing members to become certified in the following security system specialties: 1.) Automotive 2.) Electronic Security 3.) Safes, Vaults, and Safe and Vault Servic-ing and 4.) Mechanical Security.
Members shall have available at dif-ferent levels: continuous management information; business information; man-agement and business assistance; and professional business instruction, which will allow members to be more successful.
The certification program (PRP) in-cludes a recertification program that promotes continuing education, and it also provides an updated Study Guide and tests. Through the support of the
locksmith industry contributions, the ALOA training center has been enhanced substantially, as well as taken on a new name: the Aaron M. Fish Security Train-ing Center. With the number of class-rooms now tripled, ALOA has the abil-ity to offer more classes year round from beginner to expert.
Computer-based testing is now avail-able at more locations across the country, allowing practically anyone to participate without having to travel very far from their homes. Most recent certifications es-tablished include ICRL, ICPL and ICML.
RecognitionALOA achieves recognition in many seg-ments of the industry and beyond, such as security product manufacturers through the ALOA Annual Convention and Secu-rity Expo; related industry associations by the development of joint initiatives with ESA, FSPA, IFDIA, DHI, SHDA and oth-ers; government through the U.S. De-partment of Labor with ongoing updat-ing of the ALOA National Apprenticeship Standards for Locksmiths; and the general public through the new Find-A-Locksmith website, consumer awareness info on the ALOA website and press releases to the media. Although the administration of the NASTF was transferred to ASA a few years ago, there is representation at the annual convention by way of a manned booth, as well as constant communica-tion from those desirous of that service.
The primary effort in increasing the use of the logo has been the assignment of a logo registration number to every member. The number must be used when the logo is displayed for advertising and promo-tional purposes. ALOA has several logos: the corporate logo with or without the slo-gan slogan “Locksmiths You Can Trust;” a logo with the slogan “Security Pros You Can Trust,” and the original logo with As-sociated Locksmiths of America.
Members can also access and download the ALOA logo in EPS and JPG formats in the Members Only section of the web-site for printing or website use. We also encourage our members to display the logo on their storefronts, service vehicles and uniforms. There is a wide variety of apparel, pins and decals available in the ALOA store.
In an effort to make the states aware of the “scammer locksmith” problem, the legislative representative addresses the National Association of Attorneys Gen-eral at their conferences; he also makes presentations at several other govern-ment-related gatherings, including the National Association of State Legisla-tors and the International Association of Security and Investigative Regulators (IASIR). A scammer committee was ap-pointed by the President. ALOA has ex-pressed its support of efforts by an indi-vidual locksmith against Google due to the scammers on a monthly basis. This increases awareness and has resulted in an increase in interest for the program.
CommunicationALOA puts forth great effort to commu-nicate with its members and the industry in a variety of ways.
One of the most visible methods of communication is the ALOA Weekly Update e-Newsletter, which is forwarded to the membership routinely, providing timely updates on ALOA activities as well as articles relative to the industry and businesses in general. Material for the newsletter is compiled from various news

SARGENT, an ASSA ABLOY Group company, recently attained two in-
dustry certifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The first, ISO 14001, is one of a family of standards that help organizations minimize the environmental impact of their opera-tions and comply with applicable laws and regulations. The second certification, ISO 9001, specifies requirements for a qual-ity management system, ensuring that products and services meet customer and regulatory mandates. Each certifi-cation required a third-party review of the factory and its procedures, as well as a weeklong audit of records and staff.
The website for Securitron, an ASSA ABLOY company, has a
new look as well as additional informa-tion and content. Visit www.securitron.com to learn more.
Business Tip of the MonthA great way to earn more busi-
ness and respect in your commu-nity as a professional locksmith is to do-nate time to your local law enforcement departments: offer to host a one-hour
gaining entry to vehicles training course. You’d be surprised how many officers don’t know how to open a vehicle nonde-structively. This is valuable information for emergency situations such as having a person or pet locked in a car.
Now I know what you’re going to say: “If local police are doing car lockouts, then that takes business away from me.” I’ve found this not to be true. Police don’t like to take these calls unless a life is in danger (they don’t want the liability, nor do they have the time), so you really don’t lose business except on rare occasions. In fact, after hosting a class, I found a large increase in business because all the non-emergency calls were now being directed to me; I passed out business cards and key chains with my phone number on them.
This also opened up the door to start taking care of their locksmith work for the building. One year after I hosted a class, I installed more than $6,000 in elec-tronic access equipment to that same de-partment, and I still receive calls via the police for non-emergency lockouts for vehicles and homes. That one hour of time donated was the biggest return on investment I’ve ever made.–Wayne Winton
NEWS BRIEFS
Doug Gulvin, 62, passed away June 29 in Oregon. He was an avid lock-smith after beginning his career as a firefighter and was a member of the Clearstar Network and ALOA.
IN MEMORIAM
Sargent recently obtained two industry certifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which required a third-party review of the factory and its procedures.

When you’re trying to source the right door security hard-ware, there’s no sub-stitute for a knowl-
edgeable, highly trained technical sales rep. A great sales rep will understand your business, draw on their own field experience to help solve problems, and go the extra mile for you.
That’s what Harry, a locksmith, recent-ly discovered. While placing a small or-der for key blanks with Security Lock Distributors, a large wholesale distribu-tor of door security hardware, he was amazed at the level of attention he re-ceived. A technical sales rep at Security Lock Distributors quickly provided the quote he needed, and readily answered all of his questions. Harry had initially apologized for the size of his order, but the rep assured him that no request was ever too small.
“Many tech support reps have given me wrong or outdated part information because they don’t give these small orders their full attention,” says Harry, “But the Security Lock Distributors rep always navigates the occasional messes and gives me the correct information for ordering and shipping.”
As Harry discovered, the best sales reps aren’t just waiting around to sell you products and process your order. They’re ready and willing to work hard to help de-termine your business needs and deliver the right solution.
Experienced locksmiths putting their knowledge to work One reason that great sales reps can of-fer such valuable, hands-on help is that many of them have years of experience doing your exact job. At Security Lock Distributors, the technical sales team is comprised of former locksmiths, systems

integrators, and other professionals ex-perienced in areas like door hardware installation and access control technol-ogy. Tom, a former locksmith who’s now a Technical Sales Rep at Security Lock Distributors, explains, “Because of our experience in the field, we can visualize what our customers are doing and know which products they need to help com-plete their job”
As an example of the kind of useful knowledge sales reps can offer, Tom mentions the confusion that can hap-pen with electric strike installation. Fre-quently used with intercoms, an elec-tric strike must be compatible with the lock that needs to be released. “Since the locks often aren’t installed by the same locksmith, we have to first help the cus-tomer figure out what kind of lock they have. That can take a lot of time, but it’s worth it, because then we can tell them exactly what kind of strike they need,” he says.
Tom has also relied on his experience to help customers solve issues with exit devices, which are made specifically for either hollow metal and wood doors or narrow-stile doors. “We ask them to send pictures so we can understand exactly what we’re working with.” says Tom, “That way we can be sure that we’re help-ing them choose the right product.”
Talk to a voice you can trustWhen issues like the ones Tom describes arise, it can be helpful and comforting to talk to someone who can not only relate to your situation, but also offer solutions. “Our customers like having a familiar voice to talk to. We get a feel for their approach to problems and can anticipate what they need.”
And as far as the kind of product infor-mation a good sales rep can offer…well, that can range from traditional mechani-cal hardware to the very latest high-tech systems.

LONGDAYSAT THEOFFICE
A seemingly quick and lucrative job lags in time — and profits. By Greg Perry, CML, CPS
The December 2014 issue of Key-notes included an article titled Op-portunity Knocks, about installing a Securitron DKC with a keypad. I mentioned another opportunity fol-
lowing right behind this one: a small start-up company that makes UAVs called as I was nishing the rst job. ey wanted a quote for a 2-door system, installed on two build-ings: an o ce and a warehouse. Sounds like a quick and protable install.
The customer had a few requirements. First, they wanted proximity-card access only — no codes or PINs — for about 25 users. Next, they need the ability to log who entered the building, but no time restrictions. As a start-up, they have employees working day or night as the inspiration hits or a cus-tomer calls. e catch? No conduit between the buildings. e buildings are only 20 feet apart, but without the conduit, it would mean two separate controls or wireless.
WWW.ALOA.ORG FEBRUARY 2015 KEYNOTES 27
Considering Some Optionse warehouse has a cylindrical lever lock, and the oce has an aluminum glass door with an Adams Rite MS1851 deadbolt. I called my friend and ASSA ABLOY repre-sentative Tom Foxwell again to discuss the possibility of using the ASSA ABLOY Aperio hub system with another Securitron DKC. e control seemed ideal: it’s a low-cost con-trol that would meet their needs perfectly. e Aperio hub system is a wireless reader and hub to avoid the issues with running wires to the door reader.
Generally, the reader is mounted outside on the wall or door and the hub is installed inside on a wall or the ceiling. My catch is, normally on a job like this, you would place the control inside the oce and the wireless transmitter on the warehouse. Although we could place the reader on the warehouse and the control in the oce, the system does not oer the ability to wirelessly trigger an output for a lock.
Tom suggested changing my plans to in-stall the control in the warehouse. e Se-curitron DKC can connect with the Adams Rite A100-3090H lock combined with the Aperio wireless hub system, and because this is an “all-in-one” unit, the lock is trig-gered wirelessly.
First Things FirstI started by installing an electric transfer hinge in the warehouse door. I then wired it to a Marks 195F-EU 12-volt electried lever lock. Going back the other way from the hinge, the DKC is mounted on the wall in the corner behind the door.
“The control seemed ideal: it’s a low-cost
control that would meet their needs perfectly.”
ere are several reasons for the location of the control. First, it is close to the door, and the corner location is protected. Second, the USB connection should be installed in an ac-cessible location. ird, the location allowed me to drill from the hinge to the wall behind the control, hiding the hole under the DKC control, and the same hole on the inside was used to drill through the wall to where the outside reader was installed. e power supply was installed on the wall adjacent to the DKC, and an electrician connected the power sup-ply to the outlet box below the power supply.
Some ChallengesNext up was installing the outside prox reader. is was a very thick wall with stucco on the outside and drywall on the inside. Drilling through the wall for the conduit to the outside reader was a little challenge; the building is a metal building with the sheet metal about 9 to 10 inches deep. I ended up having to go through the metal with a long twist drill,
All the parts of the Adams Rite Aperio lock trim.
A hole was drilled in the hinge mounting bracket.
The hinge had six small wires, so three were used for each conductor.
On the inside wall, a plastic frame was used to trim the opening. The conduit is sticking out of the wall.
Then a long drill bit was used to drill from the hinge to the lock cutout.
