“They say it’s hard totake the firefighter out ofthe department and harderstill to take the departmentout of the firefighter,” saidHyland. “I am sure that urgewill always be there when-ever I hear a fire truck goby.”

“I do not understand why it matters if the board is threemembers or five members as it will not cost us more as theirbenefits and salary have been cut,” said Banks.

“I have spoken with a lot of people about this issue. Andthose who are members of the general public and not associ-ated with a township board are in favor of more members. If the constituents think it is a good idea it make sense to doit.”

Representation from around Ionia CountyOnce the number of road commission members were set,

the board turned its attention on how those members shouldbe selected. Previous discussions included a plan to dividethe county into four quadrants with one member from eachquadrant. The fifth member would be picked from any area.

However, another plan was presented in which the boardselects who it felt was the best candidates for the job. “Thewhole reason that everyone wanted to go to five personsis to get someone from each of the different districts,” saidCommissioner Jack Shattuck. “Now that we have five mem-bers, you want to go and pick the best candidates. If goingto five was done in order to represent all four corners of thecounty we should stick with that.” Another option that waspresented was to divide the county in an east-west fashionor north-south fashion and pick and equal number of candi-dates from each half.

During the discussion, Dorothy Pohl, managing directorof the Ionia County Road Commission said she was in favorof picking the best candidates.“You are already getting a di-verse group by having five members,” said Pohl. “You should

be looking to pick the best candidates for the position andnot the person who fits a certain place.”

Board members then approved the road commissionpolicy to select the best members for the position regard-less of their location within the county. As part of the res-olution, the board set the road commissioners salary at$2,500 a year with a $50 per diem for each regular andspecial meeting. Members would not be paid for attend-ing conferences outside of regular meetings, but wouldbe paid mileage at the rate stated in the county’s travelpolicy

Board members were asked to put down their top fourcandidates and rank them by who they favored the most. The candidates received points based on how they were

ranked by board members. At the end of the vote, Min-kley had received 19 points, Weisgerber was next with 15points, Hurlbut was third with 13 points, while Cusackand Gasper tied for the final spot with each receiving ninepoints.

A second vote was held to break the tie with Cusackreceiving four votes while Gasper received three votes.

The point system also determined the length of theterm that each road commissioner received. Minkley re-ceived a six-year term as the top point-getter. Weisgerberreceived a four-year term.

Hurlbut received the remaining term being held byEarl Strater, who is retiring on Jan. 15. His current termends in four years. Cusack received a two-year term.

PORTLAND — The Portland Community Fund con-cluded its 2010 Christmas Giving program with the dis-tribution of the Christmas boxes on Dec. 17.

The organization assisted 178 families from withinthe Portland School District this year, which included372 children. Approximately 665 people received as-sistance through the program.

Also, this year, 36 area families were “adopted” bylocal families who donated food and gifts to help themget by.

Through the program, families in need of assistancereceive a complete Christmas dinner as well as gifts forchildren ages 18 and under.

Members of the Portland Community Fund creditthe donations by area residents, churches, schools andbusinesses for the success of the program

“We appreciate the support that everyone gave us,”said Sandy Olson, Portland Community Fund president.“We are proud of Portland’s generosity and caring somuch about its residents to make the Christmas Givingprogram a success.”

Food for the Christmas dinners was collected byarea churches and schools. Food not included in theChristmas boxes was donated to local food banks.

Toys for the program were provided through GivingTrees located in churches throughout Portland, as well

as the Toys for Tots program in Ionia.A shoebox project organized by retired teacher Phil

Huber and current teacher Kacy Goeckel helped fillshoeboxes with age appropriate items for children. Ap-proximately 350 shoeboxes were filled this year.

Volunteers of all ages also helped pick up, sort andpack food and gifts to prepare them for distribution.

“Everyone helped make this a special Christmas sea-son for so many people,” said Olson.

“We would like to thank everyone who made a dona-tion or helped us in any way to make the program asuccess.”

Ethan Childs, DC

An Idea forWorld Peace in 2011

It is amazing how far reaching the impact of having both a clear nervesystem and a healthy life style is, not only for you – but also for your family, your friends, your co-workers and - for that matter - the entire planet! Thefollowing conversation excited my family, my staff and myself so I wantedto make it available to you,my friends.

Dr. Childs: Does anyone know why we adjust people?

Ledges’ Staff: To help themhave a lifewithout nerve interference, becomehealthier and help them reach their full potential in life.

Dr.Childs: Wow! Excellent answer! So, you really get the idea that healthis an active journey rather than a state to arrive at, don’t you?

Ledges’ Staff: Absolutely!

Dr. Childs: Great! Now let’s assume that our patients see an increase intheir health. Let’s take, for example, aman in his mid thirties. Do you thinkthat as this happens for him that he will havemore energy or less energy?

Ledges’ Staff: Increased energy!

Dr. Childs: And because of that increased energy, do you think that hemight be able to be a better employee, husband and dad?

Ledges’ Staff: Yes.

Dr. Childs: And because of this man’s increased productivity, would hiscompany and family likely be better off?

Ledges’ Staff: Sure.

Dr. Childs: And knowing that he is personally helping his company andfamily achieve their goals more completely; would he probably feel betterabout himself or worse about himself?

Ledges’ Staff: Better!

Dr. Childs: And if he felt better about himself, would he likely feel moreat peace or less at peace?

Ledges’ Staff: More at peace.

Dr. Childs: And, with this man feeling more at peace with himself, wouldhis interactions with his wife, kids and co-workers each day likely bemorepeaceful or less peaceful?

Ledges’ Staff: More peaceful.

Dr. Childs: Ok, now with the communications directed at them in thispeacefulway, would his kids probably feel better about themselves orworseabout themselves?

Ledges’ Staff: Much better!

Dr. Childs: In what way would they feel better about themselves?

Ledges’ Staff: Well, they would have increased confidence and self-esteem.

Dr. Childs: That’s right! And with them growing up with a higher self-esteem, would they bemore likely or less likely to try things that can reallymake a difference in other people’s lives?

Ledges’ Staff: More likely!

Dr. Childs: And, having this higher self-esteem, would they tend to feelmore peaceful or less peaceful?

Ledges’ Staff: More peaceful!

Dr. Childs: So, if our practice was filled with people whose families wereexperiencing this same process of feeling better and more peaceful aboutthemselves because of the adjustments they receive and because of thehealthier lifestyle choices they make, would the effect on our communitybe one of creating less peace or more peace?

Ledges’ Staff: More peace, absolutely!

Dr. Childs: And if our whole country were filled with families who wereexperiencing this same thing, would our country be less peaceful or morepeaceful?

Ledges’ Staff: More peaceful.

Dr. Childs: Let’s think about this. What would the effect on the world beif every country were filled with people more fully expressing their healthand lives because they had clear nerve systems and healthy lifestyles?Would there bemore peace or less peace in the world?

Ledges’ Staff: More peace in the world.

Dr. Childs: Okay, I began this by askingyou why we adjust people, and you gaveme an awesome answer. But knowingwhat you know now, having gone throughwhat we just have, let me ask you again…why do we adjust people?

Ledges’ Staff: Wow…to increase worldpeace…to increaseWORLD PEACE!

“How important is it for each of us to behappy and healthy? How far does yourinfluence reach without your knowledge?Dr. B. J. Palmer once said, “You never know how far reaching somethingyoumay think, say or do today will affect the lives ofmillions tomorrow.”

Remember this the next time you find it difficult to make a healthylifestyle choice, but add just one word; “You never know how far reachingsomething youDON’T think, say or do todaywill affect the lives ofmillionstomorrow.” Remember, everything you do or don’t do starts a ripple effectthat spreads out across our world, and every single ripple counts! Decidetoday to make each and every one of your ripples count the way you wantthem to.”Kevin Donka, DC

I wish all of you and your families a happy and healthy 2011!!

LANSING — Initial estimates suggest Michigan fire-arm deer hunters killed about the same number of deerstatewide this year as in 2009, according to the Depart-ment of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE).Reports regarding deer harvest ranged widely, from sig-nificant increases in some locations to declines in oth-ers, potentially a result of concentration of deer aroundthe excellent mast crops available this fall.

DNRE biologists estimate the harvest compared to2009 was unchanged to up perhaps as much as 10 per-

cent in both the Upper Peninsula and the SouthernLower Peninsula and down 5 to 15 percent in the North-ern Lower Peninsula. Deer from throughout the statewere reported to be in good condition, as indicatedby improvements in antler development in all regionscompared to last year.

As expected, with the mild conditions experiencedin the winter of 2009-2010, deer numbers in both north-ern regions look to be recovering from the effects ofprior winters.

State’s deer harvest estimates similar to 2009But hunter numbers appeared down - particularly on

public land statewide -likely due to the opening day ofthe firearm season falling on a Monday this year.

“Most deer hunters support maintaining the tradi-tional season dates of Nov. 15 through 30, but we con-sistently see a drop in hunter numbers in those yearsthat the season opens on a Monday,” said DNRE Wild-life Division Chief Russ Mason.

“This may need to be a topic for discussion as wemove to form Regional Deer Advisory Teams and en-gage our conservation partners to discuss long-rangemanagement goals.”

“Antlerless quotas were set the same or lower in theUpper Peninsula and western portion of the NorthernLower Peninsula, but we emphasized the need for hunt-ers to take does in the eastern portion of the NorthernLower Peninsula and much of the Southern Lower Pen-insula,” said DNRE Deer Program Leader Brent Ru-dolph.

“Efforts to control bovine tuberculosis in deer con-tinue in the Northeastern Lower Peninsula. Althoughdeer numbers appear stable over the last few yearsin much of the Southern Lower Peninsula, they’re stillhigher than we’d like to see in many places.”

Rudolph emphasized that the preliminary estimateswill be replaced by final figures of harvest and partici-pation generated by the annual mail survey completedonce all deer seasons are concluded.

Preliminary estimates last year suggested a declineof 10 to 20 percent from the prior season harvest, andthe final mail survey results reflected a drop of 19.8percent in the firearm kill.

GRAND LEDGE - Shortlybefore Christmas when manykids may have been focusedon what to expect under thetree for themselves, a trio ofarea children were thinkingof someone else.

On Wednesday, Dec. 22,Anthony Kreiner, 9, of Ea-gle, his cousinAlexis Krein-er, 10, ofPontiac, andKyra Dennis,10, a fifth-grader at Bea-gle in GrandLedge, de-cided to helpout a youngfriend, Jaca-lyn Lambrix-Wilkes, 8.

Jacalyn of Delta Town-ship had recently been struckwith a recurrence of cancer.

Surgery and a stay atUniversity of Michigan-MottHospital has forced her topostpone a Make-a-WishFoundation trip to DisneyWorld, scheduled for Jan. 8.She was going to stay in thecastle.

Anthony and Alexis knowJacalyn because her grand-parents, Randy and JackieWilkes, live near their grand-parents in Grand Ledge. Kyralives in the Wilkes’ neighbor-hood.

“They told us they weregoing caroling,” said Antho-ny’s mother, Melissa. Aboutan hour later the trio re-turned and reported they hadcollected about $50.

“We said, ‘what? You’retaking money from people?’”Melissa said. “And they said‘no, we took the money to Ja-calyn’s grandparents to giveto her family.’”

On a second trip out thechildren returned with $146.

Anthony, a fourth-graderat Westwood Elementary inPortland, couldn’t explainhow the kids came up withthe idea, but said, “It feltgood.” It was fun to thenhand over the money to thegrandparents.

“They were amazed,” hesaid. Indeed they were, agreed Jacalyn’s grandfather,Randy Wilkes.

“I was very impressed bythat,” he said. “They did it allon their own with no parentever involved.”

His granddaughter, a stu-dent at Willow Ridge El-ementary, will now faceanother round of chemother-apy and radiation. His daugh-ter, Becca Lambrix, Jacalyn’smother, said she expects Ja-calyn to miss a lot of school,he said. “She has a long bat-tle ahead,” he said.

But the actions of the chil-dren and the contributionsfrom their neighbors touchedtheir hearts, Wilkes said.

“I really thought thesekids should get some recog-nition,” Randy said. “Theirhearts were all for Jacalyn.”

And Wilkes said he want-ed to share the informationabout his granddaughter.

“Maybe other people willoffer up prayers for Jacalyn,”he said,
