PORTHKERRIS END OF SEASON NEWSLETTER 2016 So we are now into 2017… Here’s a round up of 2016 at Porthkerris. DIVING CONDITIONS AND SEA LIFE Visibility has generally good in 2016, with a few beastly easterlies and not too much rain. Unfortunately for Basking Sharks and the several hundred people on our email list wanting to see them, there wasn’t much plankton in the water either, so our Basking Shark sightings were very rare last year. The sea temperature reached a maximum of 17°C and in December it was around 12°C. There were sightings of lots of other wonderful marine life both off the boat and on the shore dive... Sunfish, Conger eels, Thornback Rays, octopus, Cuckoo wrasse, seals, crawfish, barrel jellyfish, several different types of dolphins and lots more! It was even reported that Orcas were spotted in Cornwall, off the Roseland Peninsula, although we have yet to see them here at Porthkerris! CREW 2016 The usual crew are still here... Mike, Jo, Dave and Darren. New staff member Milo helped run the shop and office with Jo and was also our PADI/BSAC instructor. Sam and Nick ran the cafe last year and had an amazing new menu... American fluffy pancakes with maple syrup and bacon, a range of tasty burgers, spicy fries and pulled pork baps etc. We also welcomed Becky as part of the crew as she completed her DM internship with us over the summer. COURSES During the summer we had plenty of Courses running from try dives to Divemaster. Course dates for 2017 are flexible and we can usually arrange courses and try dives most days, but some courses like the PADI Open Water need a minimum of 2 people on them. Look out for the 2017 special offers on courses and try dives. If you are not already a scuba diver, and wondered what it would be like to breathe under the sea, then how about booking a Discover Scuba Dive with us next year. During your Discover Scuba Dive you will learn all about the equipment and the skills you need to know to dive. Explore our great reef here at Porthkerris and hear all about what it takes to become a certified diver. If you love your first breaths underwater we can then offer you the opportunity to become a certified diver, taking your PADI Open Water course we will then knock off the price of the Discover Scuba course (usually £60pp). BOATS Dave was running the Celtic Kitten as usual and has been kept extremely busy. On a couple of weekends this year he even did 8 trips a day! After his accident, Mike is making a good recovery and he started running the CAT again in May. Although we had considered selling the CAT, it still proves to be an extremely popular boat, especially with long-term regulars who like to opportunity of going further a field.
