Survey of Diamond Chair

HYBRIDAZTION: DIAMOND CHAIR + LC4 CHAISE LONGUE

Part 1: Interpretation

Part 2: Reorganization

Hybridization Process

Exploded in Axonometric of LC4 Chaise Loungue

The new object is made of the original object of investigation, joined with one from another team. The knowledge and documentation gained from the careful examination in the antecedent becomes immediate knowledge to be shared from others so that a new and wholly recomposed new entity is found.

When a material and geometry become discrete knowledge, they lead to designs operation that can be repeated and transformed.

The first part of the this project is to learn the importance of measure in architecture and the difficulty of transcribing measurements into architectural representations. Survey includes object’s dimensions, geometries, joints, move-ments, and materials.

We chose diamond chair because of its organic structure, mostly made of curvatures and it was chanllenging to accurately measure these curva-tures.

Bertoia said “the human body determines… the comfort and the measurements of its environ-ment… the human measure is still the strongest factor…and if the chair’s adaptable it responds and it’s almost like wearing a comfortable coat; you really don’t know you have it on.”

The spatial, sequential, and experiential relationships devel-oped within an interior space that is integrated with the hybridized chair in project 1.

Starting point is determining an occupant. Since I had work experience as an accountant, I was able to fully understand what the accountant needs based on the work cycle; busy season (March to May) and off-season (June to Febuary).

During busy season, the accoun-tant needs direct access to library and library should be spacious. On the other hand, during off-season, sufficient space of living room and direct access to living room are provided.

Vertical rotation of the house is possible due to the weight of documents. As the busy season approches, more and more docu-ments are piled up and the weight pushes down the library to the ground level, and when the accountant throws away docu-ments after busy season, the house goes back the original state.

Understanding life style of the occupants makes story of space, determines logic, concept, and relationship between spaces. Rotation of the house is correspondent with the concept of the hybridized chair in project 1.

Loops create circulation, spaces, and geometry, meeting each other and diverging from each other. Programs and circulation are lined up along the loops.

The spaces become plaza, leading people to the entrance, rehearsal hall, sky garden, performance hall, and cafe.

Two main loops shape horizontal and vertical movements of spaces: 1) a public performance hall underground and 2) private rehearsall hall and sky garden on the ground. Two conflicting spaces are progrmatically and obliquely linked by a mini bar and cafe and neutralized. 3) The other one loop creates a private path passing through adjacent dwelling houses only for perfomers. The path provides provides enclosed circulation independent from the public, and it enables performers to move from the rehearsal hall to dewelling houses without distruption. Sky garden, locat-ed in the middle of the path, functions as a center of meeting place for performers.

(Performing Loop)

Based on the measure and applicability of the body from the first project, and its presence in the domestic second project, the third project is designed for a performing center with a public programme, and an exterior for a prticular site.

The site is hypothetical; it is an urban lot with context, but it does not have a location to be found in the real world. The performance center is located on the corner of the site, addition to the three adjacent buildings and presents two facades to the street. Three adjacent buildings are dwelling houses used for the performers only.

ProcessMain concept of rotation from the first and second projects creates horizontal, oblique and veritcal spaces. Rather than utilizing pre-defined three different angels of spaces, facade of spaces are brought to the third project in order to make more dynamic spaces and maximize its potenti-ality.

Loops Creating SpacesRotation from the first and second projects is applied to the third project; rotation of the chair and the house form a loop. The loop creates circula-tion, spaces, and geometry while meeting each other and diverging from each other. The spaces become plaza, leading people to the entrance, rehearsal hall, sky garden, performance hall, and cafe.

By writing main programs on a strip and folding it, circula-tion and spaces are created.
