  • JAVIER ENRIQUE PEREZ SOTAPORTFOLIO

  • I was born in Lima in 1989 into a merchant fam-ily. I lived in Peru until I was 17 where I developed a connection and attachment with Peruvian culture. I moved to Sweden in 2006 where I learned English and Swedish. I also got my second nationality. In 2008 I studied Civil Engineering in Lund Univer-sity, where I discovered that architecture was my biggest interest. I moved next year to Gothenburg to study Architecture and engineering what at the time was a quite new course where it was possible to be-come both an architect and an engineer. I took the architect path, but there is still an engineer in me. At the moment I am a newly graduated architect with different interests and recently admitted at Chalmers University to start a second master in Structural engineering. While my studies in architecture I have not only ,as many others, traveled and discovered the world but I have always had one foot in the working life and life in general since my daily life consist in school, social activities, part jobs, friends, family and traveling.

  • lOOP - rebro new hightech hostpital

The facilities and functionality of the current rebro University Hospital are becoming dated, so the rebro County Council set forward some goals and guidelines with the ambition to construct a new highly specialized care unit, It intends to house modern and attractive facilities, evidently providing patients and workers a better environment which contributes to the well-being of all users. The new building would compose of numerous clinics, operation areas, inpatient spaces, and expects patients from all over Sweden.

    GOalS

The project takes in consideration outside the boundaries of the designated project site area. The point of departure for the design concept was deeply imbedded in the existing flows patterns on the hospital site, and foreseeing an efficient solution for the future interior flow, which supports all necessary functions and interrelates in an appropriate manner to the surrounding existing flows. A solution to this was the implementation of loops as corridors, in which rooms encircles around. Interventions to the continuos loops were made in such a way that supports the entrance of daylight, ventilation, and achieve clear way-finding. The loops also helped create an additional quality space in the centre of it, that characterized itself as a distinct public and open space, but existing in harmony with the various room typologies that are part of the hospital building.

  • View of courtyard. The hospital transparency in the bottom floor gives to the building an human and urban entrance situation where the visitors are welcome by warming and lively interior atmosphere. The courtyard reduces the effect of the monumentality that the hospitals usually have. From the courtyard the patients and visitors can easily find their way in the building.

The music academy in Tampere, Finland lacks an extension that can accommodate an increase of activity in the form of dance, music and performances. However, this extension would not only sat-isfy that need of architecture in terms of spatial qualities but also understand the possibilities of how culture can be reflected in architecture and, furthermore, how this architecture can improve the conditions of how to experience this culture life. The extension will thereby activate its urban surroundings not only by the ongoing activities inside the building but also by how the building interacts with the outside.

    BaCKGrOuND

    GOalS

Right next to music academy of Tampere the new addition is raised. As the main building the extension is a building with integrity and with a strong design language. The extension is meant to celebrate and share the rich culture that Tampereen konservatoriotalon has to offer. By allowing the main rooms with their respective ongoing activities to be seen by the public, the extension not only creates an interaction between the academy and the public but also activates its urban sur-roundings. The sharing of the ongoing activities in the inside towards the outside is accomplished by the large windows that work as surfaces where the displays, shows or training sessions can be projected onto. The extension respects the existing building and it is placed gently next to it. It creates an internal underroof street in which a natural movement flow connects both buildings and also creates a common lobby for the Pyynikkisali, the new Pyynikkisali and the black box. The placement of the extension also means that the functions and activities of the existing building are not interrupted but rather they interact positively with the extension both vertically and horizontally.

The program of the extension can be increased by an addition on the roof. This addition can include offices and extra space allocated to learning purposes. The addition would allow an increase of 250 square meters and it would also be a way to establish the roof as a meeting point.

    ADDITION TO PROGRAM

The structure and construction of the extension is built with concrete. In some rooms, such as the black box and the main auditorium, this construction is based on the principal of a double shelled construction with isolation in between the shells to improve the sound environment. The construction is covered by wooden boards in which the direction of the wood-en planks differs for each surface.

When the city has taken over, calm places become always appreciated, those where you can take a break from the busy and noisy city. This high rise building fully understand the need of such places and with its lighten glas shield create environmentes like the plaza and atriums where you can observe the stressfull city while you are sitting on a bench, maybe drinking a cappuccino in a much quiter and peacefull place. The shield rises and illuminates the city as a lighten tower and invites you to attend to one of the different events that take place in it.

    BaCKGrOuND

    GOalS

Mong Kok tower is a combination of a regular and a non-regular facade. The non-regular facade is attached to the regular one, thus making it possible to create several local atriums inside the building. The interaction and the sharp contrast between them gives the people of Hong Kong a new exciting contribution to the skyline. The outer facade reduces the noise from Argyle and Luen Wan Street with around 20 dB. This makes it possible to have acoustical pleasant atriums whereas a NC around 40 dB from the busy streets outside.Fresh air is allowed to pass between outer and inner facade. The air flow works as natural ventilation in the building which reduces the need of mechanical ventilation.

  • The image above shows one of the atriums of the buildings. The atriums give the people a natural meeting point where they can rest and appreciate the noisy city from a more pleasant and quite environment.

  • An open plaza below the building welcomes all visitors and creates a natural meeting place. This is because of its good acoustics properties. In one side the glass shield protects the plaza from the traffic noise and in the other side the colons increase the spatial qualities.

Dancing in the top floor while watching the city it's not only a expirence for the people dancing to the view of the city but for the people below, making the top floor into an attraction.

The stay in the hotel is characterized by the view over the city combined with closeness of the lobby. The lobby is a natural meeting place for all the visitors and a perfect place to relax and have lunch or breakfast.

Spa, gym, and other recreational activities open for the hotel guests but also for the public as well. This floor helps preventing noise spreading from the night club to the hotel rooms below.

The offices have not only spatial qualities but also acoustical. Co-workers can enjoy their break in the calm atrium protected from the noisy city and without the need to go outside to find an enjoyable place.

The desks in the open office are spread along the north western side of the building which is the most protected part from the busy streets of Hong Kong. Furthermore this layout offers a magnificent view over the city. In the open office one could choose work in groups of six or at a more isolated single desk. There are several easily accessible copy rooms and sanitary rooms so there will be no need to disturb co-workers.

  • A typical hotelroom in the skyscraper.

  • TYPICAL BEDROOM*

Every room features one side with a charateristic wall shaped in irregular triangles. While wall works as diffuser, improving the acoustics of the room, it is designed to be useable as shelters too. These kind of multipurpose walls are used in the office floors as well.

The walls of bathroom are non-parallel to the walls of the bedroom thus effectively together with triangular wall preventing flanking transmission.

Coming from Fabriksgatan or from Central station welcomes the new multi-dwelling houses all Katrineholms residents and their visitors. It is a house with integrity and character, which stands as a Landmark in the city and that both travellers and residents see, remember and appreciate. The houses takes into account and interact directly with them different apartment blocks which were built in 1990 and 1912 that embraces the Stor torget which is one of the main squares of the city. The house is therefore not just a supplement without a key stone in the square future design. This brings the new house to reinforce the square life both functionally and visually.

    BaCKGrOuND

    GOalS

Walkers meet at the houses gables of a blank facade of brass which is also housing material Hallmark. It will house a way to mark the entrance to the Main Square, the heart of Katrineholm. Brass is also the material that recurs as intonation on housing projections for the long faades in contrast against the wooden panels. The eastern end is angled to form a small entrance that welcomes pedestrians coming up for stairs toward the square. Street life is enhanced by the buildings entrances to premises in all directions. Local design at street level allows both moving around and through the house. The ground floor will be supplied with a shop, restaurant and cafe that can take claim of the square in the form of terraces and various activities that reinforce square life. Entrance to the stairwells are found on the north side while the apartments balconies turns the square on the south side, is also a way to contribute to the street scene in the Main Square.
