“YOU BETTER READ THE WHOLE THING, OR ELSE”

2012/2013

The start of my final year at university. In order for us to receive projects that were tailored to our skill sets and interests we were asked to create a short presentation showcasing previous work that we felt summed up the practice we felt we wanted to continue on with. During my previous two years I focused on type and layout, I wanted to try something else, something that I had always loved, but never pursued - film & new media. I decided that the best possible way to show my enthusiasm for film & media was to create a short video, obviously. It would certainly stand out and be memorable as everyone else was sure to abide by the rules and create visual presentations using only pictures and words, on top of that it would make my intentions as to what path I wished to follow to the tutors very clear. I had done some video work before and so I created a show reel consisting of my best moving image work over the previous two years at university. I did not want to blandly string together various clips, I wanted to create a show reel that summed me up, one that had character and so I incorporated other aspects of design that I enjoy such as type and layout to create

short sentences explaining my decisions and paying homage to other aspects of design. I wanted to stand out, a wide range of colours and various styles would make it happen. I did what I set out to do, I gave it colour, gave it heart and added powerful music on top just to top it all off. It worked, and it was not cheesy! I swear.

I was put into the new media class.

It was a beautiful summers day, a rare occasion in London. My little sisters, who are adorable, were out playing. So much beauty, it had to be filmed.

THE SOCIAL SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

(Project work)

As a class we were all given famous quotes. I was given Einstein’s quote which went “only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, I’m not sure about the later”. We then had to make a response to that quote along with a poster. I got members to the public to say a word each to make up the quote, this was done in response to Einstein’s comment on people in general. The video was filmed to accompany well laid out type.

“DITTO”

Home. We had to identify what home meant to us and create a response based upon our thoughts. I wanted to go big, so I packed my bags and went to Ireland for a week. I was born there. Took my iPhone and recorded the whole film using it. Using a phone was more personal. It allowed to be prepared to capture all those special moments with the family which resulted in the end with beautiful short capturing Ireland and it’s beauty and me with my family, at home.

THE FIGHT SCENE

(Project work)

This was done for a first year project. We had to write an idea for a short film then film a snippet or trailer for the given idea. My script was about a young vigilante roaming the streets of East London fighting crime. It would focus on the human element of the subject and explore the real effects/ consequences of being a vigilante. The particular scene I filmed was a fight scene between our hero and a thug. The style is based upon CCTV footage. It is unclear for a reason. The style makes a comment about how unclear CCTV footage can be yet it is still so extensively used.

SUMMARY

THE PRESENTATION

Summary -

Overall I am happy with the outcome. I was the only one in the class to do a video. It stood apart from the crowd and accomplished its purpose.

Improvements -

The only improvement I can think of would be with the set up of the video. It could have been a smoother affair. The class did need to wait a couple of minutes.
