Easy Steps to Prepare and Apply for a Loan

Understand the type of loan that suits you. Community banks offer differently types of credit to match your unique needs and financial situation. They don’t just bundle everything together in one or two different types of loans. The type of loan that will suit you depends greatly on what you need the loan for, your credit score, and the payments you can afford.

Start by assessing your goals, budget and credit score. Then research the different types of loans that are available to suit your needs. Loan officers at ChoiceOne Bank can help you find a loan that fits your unique situation.

Understand what goes into a loan. The rate is the interest you will pay for the loan. A fixed-rate loan will have the same interest rate throughout its term. In a variable-rate loan, the interest rate will go up or down as market interest rates changes.

The rate will have an APR – which stands for Annual Percentage Rate. Many factors go into an APR depending on the type of loan. Typically, additional fees can be included in an APR. Most banks advertise the APR with the rate, but not all financial institutions are held to the same standards. So check all fees closely to make sure you are comparing properly.

The amount of time during which you will be repaying your loan is the term. Different types of loans vary in their terms. Car loans range from three to seven years, while home loans range from 10 to 30 years.

The rate and term determine the payment you will make each month, which is typically our customers’ first question: “What comes out of my pocket?” Know what you can afford and create a monthly budget so you can stick to it. You will appreciate this as you continue to make other financial decisions.

Prepare for application. Know the materials you need to have prepared. Every loan application will require the same basic information and documentation. Some types of loans will require additional information due to the unique rules, regulations, and requirements surrounding the loan process. See Appendix A for a quick checklist for Auto, RV, Consumer, Mortgage, and Business loan applications.

Common Loan Pitfalls to AvoidAt ChoiceOne Bank we look forward to partnering with you to make banking convenient and simple. This includes helping you prepare for and understand the loan process so you can avoid costly and potentially show-stopping mistakes. We want to help you avoid these common pitfalls in the loan application process.

Disregarding Your Credit ScoreThe loan application process is a horrible time to find surprises. Your credit score is what you bring to the table for a loan. It tells the lenders how likely you are to make payments on time and ultimately repay your loan. Review your credit score for accuracy before you begin the loan application process. Take time to understand your credit score and the ingredients that make up the credit score so you can proceed with confidence.

Ignoring the DetailsPurchasing a new car or home is exciting, but understanding your loan before you sign on the dotted line is important in preventing unexpected costs. Review the details thoroughly and create a list of questions you want to understand before you sign. Make sure the rate, term, closing fees and payment are what you expected and can afford. When you are talking with the ChoiceOne team, we’ll take the time to help you understand what you are buying and how we can help you fulfill your dream.

Not Getting PreapprovedPreapproval empowers you in the shopping process. It helps you feel comfortable with what you can afford and gives you time to understand all the costs involved before you sign on the dotted line. With a preapproved loan we discuss with you the rates based on your qualifications and inform you on the anticipated monthly payments. Understanding your loan before you walk into what most people would consider a high-pressure situation means you can focus more on getting to the bottom line.

Your local ChoiceOne branch can help you get preapproved so you can be empowered in the shopping process: knowing what fits your budget.

Limiting Your OptionsMany people don’t know what to ask for when it comes to finding the best loan for them. The amount of the loan, type of credit, what the loan will be used for and whether you have collateral will determine the best for you.

It’s important to know what you’re signing in your agreement. At ChoiceOne, we are here to help discuss the appropriate fit for your specific situation.

Understanding Your Credit Score

Payment HistoryThe largest contributor to a credit score your payment history. It is based on how often you pay your bills on time, over time. Late payments will decrease your score, however, numerous late payments in a row will significantly decrease your credit score. TIP: Setting up electronic payments and alerts help keep your payments on schedule and payment history positive.

Amounts Owed There are two different types of credits: loans and lines. Loans typically are set for a certain amount, such as an auto or mortgage. Lines are an amount offered to you that you can use over time, for example, a credit card or a home equity line of credit. The amount owed of a loan is the entire balance of the loan that you haven’t paid off for either a loan or a line. The larger amount you owe doesn’t necessary mean your credit score is increasing or decreasing. TIP: Managing the amount you owe is the most important factor.

For many banks, your credit score has the final say. At ChoiceOne, we see you as a person, you talk with our people and we evaluate the best options for your personal situation. We understand what it takes to be successful in our community and we have a vested interest in keeping our communities strong. The credit score is part of what we consider when we are evaluating the opportunity though, so we want to make sure you are putting your best foot forward when applying with us.

Qualifying for a loan, line of credit or mortgage

doesn’t reflect a specific moment in time—it involves

commitment and discipline. Whether it’s a credit card,

car loan, or a mortgage, lenders want to know that you

are likely to repay your loan and make payments on

time. To determine if you are a good credit risk, lenders

examine your credit score whenever you apply for credit.

FICO Credit ScoreA FICO Credit Score is simply a numeric summary of

the information in your credit reports that represents

your potential credit risk in a measurable way. FICO

Credit Scores range from 300 to 850, with the average

being 680 – 700. The factors included are payment

history, amount owed, length of credit history, new

credit, and types of credit used. Each factor makes

up a percentage of the total score.

ChoiceOne Bank Remodels Cedar Springs Branch Office

Cedar Springs, MI (July 28, 2015) – ChoiceOne Bank officially announced the completion of its remodeled Cedar Springs branch office with a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 24.

“We are pleased to provide a more open and convenient layout for our customers,” said Kelly Potes, President of ChoiceOne Bank. “The new design is also consistent with the look of our other ChoiceOne branch offices in the communities we serve.”

The Cedar Springs branch now features a more visually appealing office that is consistent with other ChoiceOne Bank locations from Fremont to Rockford. The remodeled Cedar Springs facility offers greater convenience including a more open branch lobby area and a repaved parking lot.

The project was completed in a manner to ensure little disruption to business during the remodeling, and allowed the bank to maintain full operation throughout the process.

“As the local community bank, it’s important to have a strong and consistent presence in the communities we serve,” said Potes. “We are very pleased with these renovations and thank our customers for their patience during this remodeling project. We invite all to stop by for a visit. We improved our branch office so we can better serve the Cedar Springs community.”

ChoiceOne Bank Supports Habitat for Humanity of Kent County

Sparta, MI (April 12, 2016) – ChoiceOne Bank recently donated $15,000 to support Habitat for Humanity of Kent County and will donate another $15,000 in 2017. The donation this year is helping fund Habitat Kent’s Homebuyer Financial Education Program to provide financial education for qualified homebuyers in Kent County. The $15,000 in 2017 will help leverage a $2.5M community investment to build and preserve low-income housing for 120 homeowners through Habitat Kent’s Building Blocks strategy. “We are pleased to support Habitat for Humanity of Kent County,” said Kelly Potes, President of ChoiceOne Bank. “As the local community bank, we are honored to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. This is the mission of Habitat Kent and it speaks to our mission as well. We look forward to a continuing partnership with this exceptional organization.” Habitat Kent’s homeownership program provides critical access to affordable homeownership and is designed to make it easier for low- to moderate-income borrowers to make the transition from renters to homeowners. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payment, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor into building their home and the homes of others through Habitat Kent’s sweat equity agreement. Potes said this year’s donation from ChoiceOne Bank goes towards specific financial educational programs for homebuyers that are facilitated by Habitat Kent. “It is part of their requirement for sweat equity hours necessary to buy a home,” he said. Part of Habitat Kent’s Building Blocks strategy is to help make homeownership affordable with volunteer labor and donations. Instead of giving houses away, Habitat Kent empowers people to build and own their home alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
