PORTABLE PARTIAL DISCHARGE MONITORING SYSTEM

Predictive maintenance method

Nowadays, the partial discharges (PD) measurement is one of the most reliable methods to

evaluate the insulation condition of high voltage electrical installations.

The defects in the insulation due to manufacture, assembly or aging are evidenced generating

PD that accelerate the degradation process causing the premature dielectric failure.

The PD measurement with BlueBOX Technology is a non-invasive technique that allows to

locate and to evaluate the severity of all the insulation defects in order to avoid the

breakdown.

BlueBOX Technology

The portable system MS Pico is the adaptation of the continuous monitoring technology used

by Diael to solve efficiently spot measures.

BlueBOX technology not only allows the offline PD measurement as the traditional systems,

but also thanks to its automatic noise suppression system and automatic localization tools, it

enables the online PD measurement. The online PD measurements diagnostic avoids the costly

discharging of the installation as well as the use of complex mobile generators.

MS Pico

The MS Pico is a portable partial discharges measurement and analysis system for medium,

high and ultra high voltage installations. It has been designed for online and offline

commissioning and periodic verifications of:

- Terminations - Substations - Underground cables - Power Transformers - Motors and Generators

EEFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR MEDIUM AND HIGH VOLTAGE

The MS Pico measuring device is the ideal solution for punctual measurement of partial

discharges. It consists of a small register with 4 measuring channels that can be powered form

a laptop. Inside the suitcase it also has space to transport all the necessary accessories to

realize the PD acquisition and accomplish a complete diagnosis. It allows complete a partial

discharges measurement in minutes and to conduct a diagnosis at real time.

The MS Pico has been conceived and designed so that operators with basic knowledge are able

to diagnose the condition of the installation. This equipment shines fundamentally in 4

aspects.

1) Simple installation

The MS Plus Portable can be located near the measuring point, allowing an easy connection

with the sensors. The connection with the control computer is made by USB 3.0.

2) Easy and automatic measurement

The 4 measurement channels of the MS Plus Portable

allows the user to obtain a voltage reference and

simultaneously capture the DP signals from the three

phases. The MS Plus Portable incorporates an automatic

data acquisition process with no need of additional

adjustments, allowing always an operator with basic

knowledge to perform the measurement in less than 5

minutes.

3) Automatic PD Pulses recognition

The MS Pico highlight over other technologies thanks to its automatic noise suppression tool

which enables the automatic PD pulses detection even under the electric noise level of the

installation. The patented BlueBOX Technology permits an automatic measurement in the

whole sensor bandwidth, compared to traditional methods based on manual filtering in certain

frequency bands. This powerful filtering technology allows to use the maximum resolution of

the equipment, detecting the most incipient defects.

4) Powerful analysis software

The software of the MS Pico is conceived to be able to diagnose efficiently and precisely the

defects found in electrical installations thanks to its available tools.

a) Phase resolved PD pattern

The software of the MS Pico is designed to perform a real-time diagnosis, representing the

phase resolved PD pattern of the pulses registered by the equipment.

b) PD Cluster

To achieve the separation of more than one PD source located in a single position, BlueBOX

Technology characterized the shape of each partial discharge source with three parameters:

two parameters α and β correlated with the asymmetry of the pulse envelope and other

parameter ω correlated with the frequency of the PD pulse. These three parameters allow a

3D representation, allowing to select the partial discharge cloud associated to each generated

PD source whose phase resolved pattern corresponds to characteristic PD defect pattern

(internal defect, corona, external superficial DP, etc. )

c) Defects localization

PD pulses can be automatically located either through automatic reflectometry, short-range

UHF sensors or by placing synchronized sensors at both cable ends. The difference of arrival

times of the same PD signal to the two sensors located at the cable ends, allows to identify the

position of the PD source. The polarity of the pulse permits to

identify the affected insulation in border elements

(transformer or cable). BlueBOX technology

GENERIC SOLUTION

Solution PD Pico

A unique and optimized solution consisting of an MS Plus Portable and 3 high frequency

current transformers (HFCT) sensors. This solution allows a single operator to diagnose the

insulation condition of cables, substations, power transformers and generators.

Application in medium voltage grids

In MV grids by connecting the open core sensors around the cable screens, the MS Pico allows

to diagnose the cable system as well as the cabinet, the measuring switchgear and the

transformer. As the measurement is performed using high frequency current sensors (HFCT),

this permits to register signals from a range of several kilometers, thus optimizing the

measured positions in MV grids for an effective diagnosis. These tests can be performed

optimally with pre-installed sensors being necessary only 5 minutes to accomplish the

measurement.

Application in high voltage grids

In HV grids the MS Pico allows the measurement of partial discharges in different electrical

assets. The equipment permits to detect defects coming from the high voltage cables by

measuring from one of its terminations in the case of cables length up to 2km.

In HV substations the measurement of the cable connecting the transformer to the substation

allows to identify defects coming from the cable, the transformer as well as the GIS. In the case

of transformers without insulated cable connection, the measurement can be made by

connecting the equipment to the transformer capacitive tap adapter.

For deeper analysis of defects

located in the GIS, the MS Pico can

be used with short-range UHF

sensors, allowing to identify sources

of PD at short distances, these UHF

sensors can be placed at the

termination of the cables or at the

separators or inspection windows of

the GIS.

Application in motors and generators

The MS Pico can also be used for the diagnosis of

motors and generators. For this purpose, if there

is no connection with an insulated cable, coupling

capacitors connected to the busbars must be

available to perform PD measurements.

DIAEL is a Spanish technology-based company that develops and manufactures partial

discharge monitoring products. DIAEL has a large experience in monitoring services of high

voltage installations, with over 1000 measurements in more than 10 countries.

The BlueBOX technology for partial discharge measurement commercialized by DIAEL permits

the detection and localization of defects in high voltage installations through non-invasive

measurements performed online or offline. This technology, promoted by Spanish electricity

companies and developed by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, has been widely tested and

validated during recent years in Spanish and foreign electrical installations.

The measurement of partial discharges with this technology permits an automatic noise

suppression facilitating the measurement to operators with a basic knowledge. The insulation

status diagnosis is performed through efficient tools allowing to detect precisely the defects of

the installation.
