At Mass when the celebrant, on our behalf, offers God the body and blood of Jesus for the for-giveness of our sins, the Eucharist becomes both a gift by us to God, as well as a gift from God to us. This is truly a sublime moment, a testimony of God’s great love for us as followers of his Son. Knowing this, how can we not be moved when we experience the Consecration? Awesome, indeed.

Receive Daily Faith Sharing from Notre Dame: It really works. A free and easy service for developing and
strengthening faith.
One of the best ways I ever encountered to build my faith is on-the-line faith sharing. Called “Faith ND” it
takes only about 5 minutes a day and, over time, I find it really does deepen and strengthen my faith. It is so easy to sign up.
Each day you automatically receive a new faith sharing experience. The day’s Gospel reading is followed by a very short faith sharing given by someone from the University of Notre Dame community: a teacher, administrator, alumni, student – all of different gender, martial status, ages and backgrounds. Most are very moving personal insights that flow out of the day’s Gospel reading. Some are so good, I forward them to relatives and friends.
A good time to get started is during Lent. Try it for a few weeks and judge for yourself whether it is helpful. I’ve been doing it for 6 years and I never miss a day. You can cancel at anytime for any reason. To sign up, just type in this EXACT internet address: http://faith.nd.edu/signup. Contact me if you have a problem.

“Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day.”
Pope Francis
Dear Parishioners: During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2017 Appeal.
As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 programs and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on.
These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live.
But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you!
If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year – think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others!

WHY IS LENT 40 DAYS LONG?
In Jewish and Christian tradition, the number 40 has symbolic meaning. A period of 40 days or years, more than being a literal measurement, represents a long time and a period of preparation or testing. When 40 days or 40 years have passed, the appropriate period or the “right amount of time” has been completed in preparation for the working of God’s grace. Recall the 40 days and 40 nights of rain during the flood in Genesis 7, the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the desert after their exodus from Egypt, and the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert before beginning his public ministry in the gospels of Matthes, Mark, and Luke. Lent lasts 40 days so that we will spend the “right amount of time” in this period of penance and preparation before Easter. The number 40 is symbolic, not a specific count of the days in Lent.
