Reading Culture at PWHS

High school and Middle school teachers gathered on Professional Development Day Friday, February 16 to exchange thoughts about how the independent reading culture is progressing in the Port Washington-Saukville School District. Teachers have received training directly from experts in the field including Kelly Gallagher, who consulted with the district in 2013 and Penny Kittle, who presented at a workshop in summer 2017. Teachers continue to be impressed by how students actively recommend books to each other and cultivate rich lives as readers. Students read in varied genres driven by their individual interests and goals as they read both for enjoyment and to challenge themselves. As our student readers have become more independent, staff have noticed many positive results. Among them, students reading by choice in down time at school (for example, after tests or while waiting for after school activities) and conversations between staff and students in all departments about reading. All staff members reinforced how a well-stocked and curated classroom library is an incredible asset in helping our students become lifelong readers. The ability to focus and read for an extended period of time is clearly an observable skill that will serve our students well moving forward in college and career. Students in PWHS’s literacy classes have worked hard this year and it’s paying off! Reading levels have climbed, writing skills are sharper, and speaking and listening skills have been honed. In all ways, literacy students have taken themselves to the next level, and they should be really proud of themselves. In February, Lit I students read a series of articles on extraordinary young people who risked their lives to make a difference in the world. Through reading these, they practiced pulling out the main ideas from a text and writing a synthesis paragraph. Currently, they are writing personal essays to practice writing with clarity and the proper use of writing conventions such as punctuation, grammar, and capitalization. Next, they will move into analyzing and writing argumentative pieces. Intermediate Literacy students are also writing personal essays at the moment, and will soon move into their third book club. They have been building their background knowledge for this book, Code Talkers: A Book About the Navajo Marines of World War Two, since before spring break. Through this, they’ll not only increase their reading skills and vocabulary knowledge, they’ll also learn how historical events often reflect the events of current times.

Key Club News

Key Clubbers didn’t hibernate this winter! Thanks to our current exec board, we started some new events as well as continuing with the traditional. Volunteering at SES weekly with our Littles, hosting a book drive, making Valentine treat bags for our Littles, serving hot cocoa and running the lollipop pull at the citywide Hippity Hoppity Easter event at Possibility Playground, and donating fleece blankets we tied were all repeat events. New this year included hosting five ACT Prep Sessions for juniors, a before and after school Valentine Hot Cocoa Sale (with proceeds going to The Thirst Project), attendance by three of our members at the weekend long Wisconsin Upper Michigan Key Club District Convention in Green Bay (attended by over 700 service minded students around the state, this was our first time ever having representation there - we are excited for it to be an annual event), and we added to our Hippity Hoppity contributions by making egg maracas to hand out and creating Easter Bonnets. Next up on the calendar is distributing the books we gathered, volunteering at the Kiwanis sponsored Week of the Young Child evenings, and planning a Pirate Partner end of the year celebration!

Biology News

This past February the AP Biology class boarded a bus and headed to Madison to experience two unique laboratory experiences at the Biopharmaceutical Technology Center Institute (BTCI) located on the southwest side of Madison in conjunction with Promega Corporation. This experience allowed the students to experience first- hand what it is like to work in a professional laboratory setting while completing two required AP Biology laboratory requirements. The first lab was Restriction Enzyme Digests and Gel Electrophoresis of DNA. Students digested lambda DNA with 4 different enzymes and then analyzed the digestion results by gel electrophoreses on agarose gels. The DNA bands on the gel were visualized by FOTO/VisionTM safe-staining and then gels photographed for the students to keep and use back at school.

After lunch and a brief mini lesson in biolumescence, the AP Biology students spent more time in the lab doing a Genetic Transformation into Bacteria and

observing the bioluminescence of the previously transformed bacteria (see the “glowing” plasmids in the pictures below).

The students returned to Port Washington with the task of analyzing their collected data and presenting their results; tying this experience directly into class discussions on biotechnology and its uses in everyday life. Being able to use the equipment found in professional laboratories as well as working with two employees of BTCI as to the applications and uses of this equipment adds authenticity and practicality to the students’ year-long studies in AP Biology.

German News

Guten Tag! At the end of 3rd Quarter, the German 1 students had a “real world” experience with their German. In correlation with the chapter they were in, they wrote a short letter in German to an email friend and sent it to me. I then told the students that to make it more real, I was going to send their emails to Mr. Teubler--the English teacher that I work with at PWHS’s partner school in Cham, Germany! They were so excited about this! Mr. Teubler and his fellow English teachers distributed the letters my students wrote to some of their students who were interested in having an email friend here in Wisconsin! Several of my students have already received an email from one of the German students and are excited about keeping in contact with their new email friends! In other German news, 17 PWHS German students along with Ms. Feyereisen and myself are preparing for our 3-week trip to Germany this summer--June 4-25. We will be visiting Munich, the former concentration camp Dachau, and Neuschwanstein Castle before going to the city of Cham where we will participate in our school exchange for 2.5 weeks. While in Cham, we will live with host families, attend school, and go on day trips to the cities of Regensburg and Nuremberg, visit villages in the Bavarian Forest. The students are all getting very excited for their big adventure where they will be fully immersed in the language and culture of Germany!
