Vol. 16 Number 43 Flu Season Preparation By Evan Kramer Flu season is upon us and the Oregon Medical Insurance Pool (OMIP) has sent out a timely newsletter entitled “Be Prepared for the Cold and Flu Season.” Their definition of flu is as follows: The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. While most healthy people recover from the flu without complica- tions, some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious complications from the flu.” Flu symptoms include fever (usually high), headache, tiredness (can be ex- treme), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, diarrhea and vomiting also can occur but are most common in children. According to the OMIP newsletter the number one way to protect against get- ting the flu is to get vaccinated each fall (NOW!) Other ways to prevent the flu are washing your hands frequently, cov- ering your nose and mouth when cough- ing or sneezing – with a tissue or arms – Not with your hands, not putting your hands around your eyes, mouth or nose until you have washed your hands, and avoiding people who cough and sneeze (not easy in my opinion, unless you go into hiding). OMIP defines those at high risk of get- ting the flu as people 65 years or older, children ages six months to 23 months, residents of long-term care facilities, people ages 2-64 with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, health care personnel who provide direct patient care, and household contacts and out-of-home car- egivers of children under six months old. The OMIP newsletter says there are no drugs that your doctor can prescribe to cure the flu or a cold. They recommend as much bed rest as possible, taking aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen ev- ery four hours as relief for fever and muscle aches. They recommend giving children ibuprofen or acetaminophen but not to give aspirin to a child without a doctor’s direction. It is recommended to drink lots of fluids with emphasis on water and fruit juices and to eat a proper diet. Also recommended is drinking hot tea with honey and eating, you guessed it, chicken soup. OMIP admits no one knows why chicken soup works but ac- cording to their newsletter, steaming chicken soup clears the mucus out of the nasal passages very effectively. Mark Twain Reappearsby Evan Kramer

Mark Twain came into this world withHaley’s Comet in 1835 and died thesame year the comet made it’s next ap-pearance in 1910. The most famous ofAmerican authors left his mark with doz-ens of books that are still in print, beingread, and will remain so for the readablefuture. Ernest Hemingway said of Twain,“All modern American literature comesfrom one book by Mark Twain calledHuckleberry Finn.”

Mark Twain made an appearance in GoldBeach a couple of weeks ago on Saturdaynight at the Gold Beach Bookstore. Twainappeared in the form of actor RobertScheppler, a 68 year old resident ofBrookings who sometimes plays the partof Mark Twain. He looked the part withhis long wavy white hair, full mustache, and white linen suit.

Scheppler presented material from sev-eral of Twain’s writings including the“Advantage of Accident Insurance”, alengthy selection from Huckleberry Finnand the “Begum of Bengal”. He didn’t dodry readings from Twain’s book but be-came Twain, speaking in a Missouritwang to us the audience and meanderingaround the stage for his “talk.”

Scheppler’s Mark Twain was presentedin the Biscuit Showroom on the secondfloor of Gold Beach Books. It’s a smallintimate room lined with rare books andseats about 40 people comfortably. Atintermission as part of the dessert the-ater, as the evening was called, thoseattending were treated to a large selec-tion of desserts, fruit and gourmet cof-fees, all as part of the $12 admission.

Gold Beach Books is worth the drive togo visit if you haven’t been down there

yet. The large two-story store has over50,000 books for sale. This is quite im-pressive for a city of 2,000 people. Theyhave a selection of new books, a largeselection of books by local authors, andshelves and shelves of used books. Thestore has a comfortable coffee bar with anice selection of pastries and plenty oftables to spread out and read a variety ofnewspapers from around the country.

Ted Watkins, the owner of the book-store, introduced Robert Scheppler. Heexplained how Samuel Clemens, a boyfrom Missouri, came to change his nameto Mark Twain (had to do with Clemens’days on the Mississippi River and thedepth measurements of the river (“marktwain” = 2 fathoms deep). You can seewhen you visit Ted Watkins’s bookstorethat for him it is a labor of love and a giftto the south coast.

Christmas BoxesMay thanks to the volunteers of the PortOrford Senior Center for putting on the“Fifth Sunday Breakfast” on October 30to benefit the Common Good. It was ahuge success with more than $300 raisedtoward keeping food on the shelves tohelp those who come up short at the endof the month and have to choose betweenfood on the table or paying rent or utili-ties.

It may seem early, but the preparationsfor the Christmas boxes are underwayalready. Recent catastrophic events inthe south and around the globe havecaused the government food subsidiesthat normally go to food pantries aroundthe state to be routed for these emergen-cies elsewhere. The Oregon Food Banksends food donations from grocery chainstores and private individuals in the Port-land area to fill the gaps. It’s still a gooddeal but shipping costs must still be paidby the Common Good.

So here is the problem faced by thevolunteers of the Common Good. Someitems for the Christmas boxes can usual-ly be filled from full pantry shelves, butthey aren’t very full this year. If Christ-
